Manning was eyeing a return in week 16 after a scripted red zone practice session. He also had a previously unknown 4th neck surgery. His arm strength then was at roughly 80% and didn't throw farther than 25 yds.
I understand that he’s a competitive guy who wants to prove he still has it. But 4 neck surgeries? Shit. I wouldn’t be getting out on the field to get steamrolled by the monsters that play defense in the NFL after that. No way.
The neck surgeries are worrisome, but if the doctors that recently cleared him are right he has no greater chance of re-injuring his neck as the next person. If 2 months ago he was at 80% and able to run a red zone offense he should be making pretty good progress by now. Whether he will ever be able to get back to 100% is another story.
ok people ... if THIS isn't enough to scare teams away, nothing will ... in MY mind the man needs to retire gracefully
In addition, league sources say Manning’s neck has potentially developed bone spurs just above the point where his latest fusion surgery took place in early September, and the Colts organization is under the belief that it is nearly inevitable Manning will at some point require further surgery, and possibly another fusion procedure, even if he does successfully return to the field in 2012. It’s unclear how any potential long-term neck issues will impact Manning’s decision to attempt a resumption of his NFL playing career later this year.
top that off with the Stenosis that his brother has (and that Peyton is at least susceptible to) and there’s no way that Petyton should be an NFL starting QB again
athlete or not, best QB ever or not, neck CURRENTLY healed or not … he needs to hang it up once and for all … really
Likely for the same reasons the neurosurgeon cleared me at 1 year when I still had a lot of nerve issues...
because he didn’t “see any reason” on the MRI for the numbness or nerve problems and my range of motion, etc., was improved as far as it was going to get. The releases are usually in regards to healing from the surgery. Enough pressure and they’ll usually say it’s up to the patient. Considering how badly he appears to WANT to keep playing, it’s not really surprising.
For my money, he should retire…I’d prefer not to see him in Chiefs red and watch him push to the point where he’s gonna be in pain the rest of his life from it.
thank you, WorL! seems like you keep saying this and almost everyone else ignores it , which makes me wonder about the motivations of both Manning and some of our bloggers
the old “oh, he’ll be fine” and “well he said he wants an incentive contract” are tiresome … I do NOT want to see Manning seriously hurt, and the way this drama is unfolding (and from I read today) he has no business suiting up ever again
Manning may never get back to where he was before. At this point, his career is on life support and he is gasping for his last breath. He is scratching and clawing for his last chance. The word that comes to mind is desperate. I still feel very doubtful about his return.
IMO, he needs to hang it up. He has 3 more seasons left to play at the top of his game and if he needs more fusions, you’re looking at losing a year or so with that. Is it really worth it to come back probably to a new team for one, maybe two years? With every fusion, a QB loses a little more field vision. To me, it’s not worth it for him and not worth it for a team to sign him.
My guess is that even if he does play another season, he will have to have another fusion sooner rather than later and hangs it up with that. That time you spent dealing with Peyton “Maybe” Manning you could have spent developing a QB of the future. This is Brett Favre all over again. That sure left the Vikings in a great spot.
The Packers were in a different place in Brett's career.
They had already been grooming their QB of the future with Brett at the helm providing stability. When the situation turned unstable, they got away from it foreseeing the damage it would do. We would be closer in the Brett timeline to where the Vikings were at the time.
Well, the Favre situation was unstable well before he finally went to the Jets.
At least, if you go by how much the media was talking about it.
The mistake the Vikings made was obviously not having a good prospect like Rodgers on their roster to develop, and that had nothing to do with Favre’s presence. It had to do with team management believing in the fallacy that you can put off getting that guy to develop.
I’m not advocating going after Peyton. I don’t think anybody can rationally be for OR against that until it’s seen how well he can still throw. But I don’t think his status should affect how hard the Chiefs go after a young QB prospect.
Yesterday on NFL TOTAL ACCESS it showed a long scar on the posterior portion of Mannings neck. All previous reports said he had an anterior fusion. With a scar that long on the posterior portion of the neck it tells me his surgeries were not just a simple relieve the pressure from the nerve surgery. Usually when they remove the pressure from the nerve it is through a scope. An incision that long makes me think either they opened him up and did some serious removal of bone to relieve the pressure or the fusion was done posteriorly which is generally alot more serious the the anterior approach. Either way it would make me be that more careful about signing him. I am not opposed to signing him to a LOW LOW base salary with a lot of incentives. Otherwise I say no it’s to dangerous.
So what
That’s all Cassel can throw.

Hell, he would have been just fine in last year’s offense even with the 80% arm.

50% of the time, it works every time!
