I just finished reading Brian Daboll: Another Perspective by Chris Sembower, and it got me thinking about our QB situation in relation to the Daboll hire. BTW, if you haven't already, take the time to read it. It'll get the off-season juices flowing! Here's the link: http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2012/2/6/2778606/brian-daboll-another-perspective
I've been all over the board thinking about the future KC QB. Should it be Cassel, Orton, trade for Manning, trade up to draft RG3, etc. etc.? We need a franchise QB, and NOW would be better than later!
Through all of the anticipation that FA and the draft brings, I forgot about one thing, and that's that we may already have our QBOTF in Ricky Stanzi. Now, I can already hear the naysayers warming up their arguments, but bear with me.
He has an incredible work ethic and ability to learn. He proved that in Iowa. He has good size, he's smart, has good instincts, throws an excellent ball, and he has an ability to shift in the pocket while keeping his eyes down-field. Unlike Cassel, he has shown an ability to go through his progressions, and find open receivers.
IF Sembower's perspective on Daboll is right, he could be exactly what we need moving forward. Daboll could design the offense using Stanzi's current ability. (not try to force him into a system). With the offensive weapons we already have in Bowe (hopefully), Baldwin, Breaston, Moeaki, Charles, and McCluster already in place, we could spend the off-season improving the O-line and filling in the missing pieces on D. We wouldn't have to trade the farm to land RG3 or Manning.
Now, the naysayers will argue that he needs more time. I say bolster the O-line, set up the system for success, give him a full off-season and training camps to learn the playbook (unlike last season), and prepare for the playoffs. What's he going to learn playing 2nd fiddle to Cassel? Let him start NOW!
Forget about the other 2011 rookie Cam Newton, that guys from another athletic planet, but Andy Dalton led the Bengals to the post season coming out of one of the toughest divisions in football, with far less talent than the Chiefs! I know it's debatable, but at times Christian Ponder even looked good playing for one of the worst teams in the NFL!
He's a leader on the field, has a high ceiling, and we could enjoy years of playoffs watching the Chiefs if Romeo and Daboll would just make the decision to cut ties with Cassel and Orton. We could pick up a serviceable back-up through free agency for cheap in the likes of Mcnabb or Grossman. (Not that I'd really want either, but could be had for cheap).
Using the "Chicken Salad out of chicken shit" argument, how about take something besides shit (Cassel) to make the chicken salad.
Just saying.

And draft another Rookie QB this year
you know just in case.
and the year after that,…..etc.
km230015 - February 16, 2012
Draft Brandon Weeden
Weeden vs Stanzi I will be all over that. Orton (although many are in denial) has a pretty low glass ceiling, thus his release from the Broncos. Lets see whats behind door #3!
TEXAN_CHIEF - February 16, 2012
What round is he projected to go?
Hinky Dink - February 16, 2012
I have seen 2nd-4th rd
If he was 5 yrs younger he would go 10th-30th in the 1st rd, we have been waiting 40+ yrs for our guy, at this point I would be ok spending a 2nd rd or trading up our 2nd rd to a late 1st rd pick to get him. I think he is at least on par with Andy Dalton, maybe better.
TEXAN_CHIEF - February 16, 2012
I like the way you think!
Hinky Dink - February 16, 2012
Read something about him coming from a half-read spread system
and that QB’s from that system struggle to translate to the next level, cause they have to read the whole field and be under center. which is why he struggled at the senior bowl.
So he may not be plug and play ready.
km230015 - February 16, 2012
But there are still other QB's with abillity to draft and come in and learn
with a chance to come in case Stanzi fails.
km230015 - February 16, 2012
I was totally against Weeden, the guy will be 29.
I heard him on an interview on Sirius yesterday, and the guy was tremendous. I don’t think he is a first rounder just becasue of his age, but drafting him in 2-4 might be interesting.
saskwatch - February 16, 2012
Wheedon is another overrated spread QB
He isn’t going to amount to anything
saints_chiefsfan1979 - February 16, 2012
There are lots of people out there that think he is underrated and WILL amount to something.
Mr.Pibbs - February 17, 2012
Yeah Weedens and Stanzi has no ceiling roflmao
Willie Beamon - February 17, 2012
I was wondering.
Was that the intentions of the Chiefs all along. Not wanting to throw Stanzi to the wolves and give him a year to learn the system a little. I could see no other reason that you draft a QB that has shown a lot of potential and not at least give him a shot. Especially considering who we had playing infront of him. Palko???
GO CHIEFS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Routerunner - February 16, 2012
I dont think any chiefs fan would be against playing stanzi instead of cassell.
im going to leave it at that.
chad unit - February 16, 2012
I think you're wrong
but I’ll leave it at that
upamtn - February 16, 2012
does anybody know
Where there is more clips of stanzi? ive been looking all over for preseason stuff but i can only seem to find his one TD pass and his highlights from iowa.
swish7209 - February 16, 2012

No footage anywhere to be found of it though.

Hey it worked on my madden franchise. ;)
chiefFANatic - February 16, 2012
well there ya go!
upamtn - February 16, 2012
Orton and Cassel
Are not qbotf, playing another down with either is a waste of time. We need to move on, if not Stanzi then draft someone else but 42 years to find a franchise qb (ok Trent Green was good but we had a Tyler Palko caliber defense) is enough.
TEXAN_CHIEF - February 16, 2012
Keep Cassel
release Orton and Palko and draft Nick Foles from Arizona in the 2nd round. Assuming Hunt is serious about spending money, we can address OL and NT in FA and use the draft to acquire some good depth guys. Foles is a QBOTF imo (great size, can make all the throws) but doesn’t get hype because his team was terrible whom we can develop for a year or two until he is ready. Cassel is a solid QB and with Charles back + a defense bordering on elite, he’s a good enough game manager since we aren’t getting Manning or RG3
marc1313 - February 16, 2012
No
Steve_Chiefs - February 16, 2012
Yes. See my above comment.

I saw no pudding.
Mr.Pibbs - February 17, 2012
Should have put in a poll
Steve_Chiefs - February 16, 2012
Some think Washington could take him as the 3rd QB Overall...

BAMFSpecialOps - February 17, 2012

We haven’t seen him. Well we have in Preseason but he was pretty mediocre
