The Kansas City Chiefs lost an offensive tackle and gained a tight end after some roster shuffling this week. Actually, they didn't release or cut anyone -- we had a position change. Josh Looney of KCChiefs.com reports on a few of the latest updates on the Chiefs roster:
- OT Steve Maneri changed his jersey number to 87, which is not an offensive tackle jersey number. Instead, he's now listed as a tight end. As Josh points out, Maneri played tight end at Temple.
- S Kyle McCarthy, signed this week, will wear jersey No. 41. All you special teams enthusiasts can play your jersey purchase accordingly.
For those counting, the Chiefs now have only two offensive tackles on the roster. Hmm...has the idea of the Chiefs drafting an offensive tackle ever been brought up?
Crazy, isnt it?
Every year the main stream media thinks we’re going to pick a tackle, even though it was pretty obvious that we weren’t. Now that we’re probably going to pick one, nobody thinks we will.
wustl_chiefs_fan - February 16, 2012
well, there goes Cody Fleener
wasn’t Maneri on the line blocking (or not blocking) on those Seymour-blocked FGs?
upamtn - February 16, 2012
I think this is more Bicknell Jr. saying "You're not gonna cut it on my line so TE is your only hope"
GenericBrand - February 16, 2012
I don't think you can blame Maneri for not blocking Seymour.
Well, you can but you gotta give it up to Seymour because he has like 30 pounds on Maneri and is such an elite player.
But Maneri is an athletic guy who actually has reasonably good hands, probably better than Becht. He’s got a tackle’s blocking ability and decent hands, so I’m liking this.
But I’m biased. I love the guy for taking out Polamalu.
NigerianNightmare - February 16, 2012
I blame Hoffman
He should have changed something instead of doing same thing all over again.
ChiefWarPaint - February 16, 2012
Agreed, and agreed.
Brsrkr - February 16, 2012
We better start filling some holes this off season then!!
A little anxious to see what Maneri can offer us now.
GaryfromIA - February 16, 2012
Maneri is a beast.
He’s Gronk-sized. Remember the one catch he made this year? Took Polamalu out of the game with a possible concussion; Troy hit him in the thigh for the tackle, and Maneri got the better of him.
neiowakcfan - February 16, 2012
niceee!
I do remember… but I’ll have to youtube it to fully grasp it !
GaryfromIA - February 16, 2012
Here it is
If only it was a bad idea to lead with your helmet….
Spiderwomn69 - February 16, 2012
thanks
GaryfromIA - February 16, 2012
Maneri is a big fella.
If he can run and maneuver like Gronk, we’ll have a good two TE set out there (with Moeaki)
GaryfromIA - February 16, 2012
Won't find a lot of guys Gronk's size that can move like him (plus have great hands).
I’ll take 2 or 3 of those if we can find them, though.
TRSChief - February 16, 2012
Maneri has a solid 20 pounds on Gronk.
Steve just (probably) doesn’t have the hands.
But I watched a few of his college games and he made some ATHLETIC catches. Who knows, maybe he’ll be the next uh…um… forgot his name but he was a tackle who lined up at tight end on goalline and I remember him catching a lot of TD’s.
NigerianNightmare - February 16, 2012
Joe Valerio?
Tarkus - February 16, 2012
Most likely he'll be a blocking TE that gets maybe 8-10 targets over the course of the season.
But hey, if I say “Maneri = Gronk!” enough times to myself, maybe I’ll start to believe me.
And nobody should ever believe me. About anything.
TRSChief - February 16, 2012
So we should always believe you?
I’m confused.
Tarkus - February 16, 2012
Always never don't not stop beginning to believe me.
Ever.
TRSChief - February 16, 2012
Also - what?
TRSChief - February 16, 2012
That's more like it
Honestly, it’s even more likely that he’s just camp fodder since he’s already under contract. We will need another starting-caliber TE before next season and will either sign or draft one. That leaves Pope and Maneri battling it out for 3rd string.
Chiefs4Life - February 16, 2012
More importantly, if Maneri can run and cut like Charles then I think we're set.
sea_people - February 16, 2012
I've never even considered the Chiefs drafting an OT.
In this year, or any prior.
It’s just not something that anyone’s talked about, y’know?
TRSChief - February 16, 2012
Maneri as a TE? He'll be getting cut.
Chiefs447 - February 16, 2012
Free Becht?
Tarkus - February 16, 2012
This is the new Becht?
Brsrkr - February 16, 2012
This is gnus?????
ExRoyalsFan - February 16, 2012
What's a Steve Maneri?
severn58 - February 16, 2012
He's the guy that Seymour plowed over, twice, to keep us out of the playoffs.
Maybe him being a TE will serve as a reminder to NOT line him up over a defensive tackle.
Brsrkr - February 16, 2012
I'm fine with this move
allows the Chiefs to carry more OLinemen on the active roster… given that he can play both OT and TE…
stagdsp - February 16, 2012
and yes
I hope this means that Becht and/or Pope are gone
and that a new RT is coming soon
stagdsp - February 16, 2012
It's official
Maneri is my new favorite player.
Chiefs1990 - February 16, 2012
Someone posted a link
that showed the “ideal” for each O-line position. Anyone have a copy of that? What kind of player do you look for at RT, and is that significantly different than LT?
AnkenyChiefsFan - February 16, 2012
Does anybody remember how many tackles we went into last offseason/lockout with?
I’m thinking maybe it was just Albert and Richardson. I think O’Call was on a one year deal.
Brsrkr - February 16, 2012
Too bad Cassel's # didn't get changed to that.
dbakerku - February 16, 2012
Too bad Cassel's jersey didn't change.
NJChieffan16 - February 16, 2012 via mobile
to # 4 ???
GaryfromIA - February 16, 2012
Or one of a different color?
severn58 - February 16, 2012
Or Turn it in to the equipment manager and leave the facility?
km230015 - February 16, 2012
Breaking News
Barry Richardson is changing his number to 86.
Brad-KC - February 16, 2012
Thank god we kept Maneri and cut Gaither
kcsno56 - February 16, 2012
Gaither would be a free agent right now regardless
CapsLockKey - February 16, 2012
Probably could have re-signed him for cheap before SD got him
km230015 - February 16, 2012
Not if he played, liked what we saw and then resigned him.
kcsno56 - February 16, 2012
Haley didn't want to take a chance on sitting Richardson.
Tarkus - February 16, 2012
Makes complete sense
kcsno56 - February 16, 2012
Saw in KC or SD?
If he played like he did in KC, nobody here would have cared if the Chiefs tried to re-sign. He upped his market value from his time in San Diego, but if the Chiefs really want him back he’s available. His attitude seems to be what did him in. I don’t think the guy likes playing RT or being a backup which is why he flipped the switch for the Chargers. He was the same way in Baltimore. Once they made him switch sides he turned into a quitter.
CapsLockKey - February 16, 2012
I don't believe that
I don’t think he cared if he was RT or LT, he said himself he would have played place kicker
Spiderwomn69 - February 16, 2012
Not to mention one of his best friends is Albert.
Tarkus - February 16, 2012
ha ha!
“well, this is Albert’s team, so…”
neiowakcfan - February 16, 2012
We just have to accept it
We didn’t give him a chance really, for whatever reason and SD reaped the benefits of that mistake. We had 2 great tackles and we sat one of them until we cut him. The head coach is the one who should be fired… oh wait…
Spiderwomn69 - February 16, 2012
exactly
stagdsp - February 16, 2012
And was friends with Le'Ron.
NigerianNightmare - February 16, 2012
Yup, and people never lie to the media...
He wanted to get paid and still save face in the media. Seems like a guy who said one thing but actions proved otherwise.
MountainManMike - February 17, 2012
When was this??
kcsno56 - February 16, 2012
CLK, yeah he did say he didn't want to play RT
go back to when they first brought him in, it was mentioned several times.
Hoochdawg - February 16, 2012
he may have said that in Baltimore at one point
but not in KC
stagdsp - February 16, 2012
yep
stagdsp - February 16, 2012
Wow...
Another reach for our beloved Chiefs. Pioli, The Don, whatever you are….just get/draft/find players to help us win in the position for which they have trained their whole careers for, please. He isn’t Vrabel…..he’s not the fridge….get over yourself and your pride. You want good ideas……tap my phone!!!
SFCBurkhart - February 16, 2012 via mobile
He played TE in college...
so, yeah, he’s trained for the TE position most of his career.
neiowakcfan - February 16, 2012
And he was tackle elidgible
most of the time he was in the game, I think.
NJ Chiefs Fan - February 16, 2012
Good stuff.
severn58 - February 16, 2012
Damn, Mcarthy was a straight STUD in college.
I hope this is his is breakout year, no matter what position he plays. He could be the next John Lynch/ Steve Atwater.
Pacific Chief - February 16, 2012
I feel like I'm in a quicksand of AP Kool-Aid today.
kcsno56 - February 16, 2012
I'm sure Aiken will bring you back down to earth.
Unless the subject is Cassel.
Tarkus - February 16, 2012
I still am going to need a Notarized written affidavit from Todd Haley to prove that he isn't Aiken Drum.
craig in calgary - February 16, 2012
So you aren't on the "Maneri could be like Gronkowski" bandwagon?
I almost spit out my lunch.
GenericBrand - February 16, 2012
nah...
And the way today is going, next I’m going to read that McCarthy is going to turn into your avatar.
kcsno56 - February 16, 2012
McCarthy = Buddy Christ?
TRSChief - February 16, 2012
Just imagine if we actually sign a great/elite free agent
Heads will explode.
GenericBrand - February 16, 2012
It's hard to notice what great/elite is
When Maneri can = Gronk.
kcsno56 - February 16, 2012
all we'd need is Brady
.
neiowakcfan - February 16, 2012
I'm not sure if it would be more impressive
To turn water to wine or Maneri to Gronk.
Hell some wine is cheaper than water these days. I think I’d rather be able to turn Maneri into Gronk.
kcsno56 - February 16, 2012
But we already have Stanzi!
TRSChief - February 16, 2012
If Maneri = Gronk
what would happen if we moved Mims to tight end?
MtHammer - February 16, 2012
In don't think the world is ready for that.
NigerianNightmare - February 16, 2012
I think he finally realized that he did not belong disrespecting Will Shields like that.
the Chiefs should have never given him 68 in the first place.
Chiefsdodgerslakers2415 - February 16, 2012
My point...
…is, if you can’t execute the simple assignment of blocking a technique lineman on a field goal attempt, deciphering blocking/routes will be difficult. Ryan Leaf was a stud in college too…..
SFCBurkhart - February 16, 2012 via mobile

I know what his point was
i was just teasing him for posting the same thing twice.
Chiefsdodgerslakers2415 - February 16, 2012
Well you see the thing is...
You said “one more time…”
and then I said…
awww nevermind. The moment’s over.
TRSChief - February 16, 2012
damn..
Double tap
SFCBurkhart - February 16, 2012 via mobile
Sounds like he's taking over Becht's spot
Hopefully he doesn’t tackle the RB in the backfield like Becht
Chiefs_KC - February 16, 2012
He is good at getting out of people's way
