Good morning! Here's your Kansas City Chiefs news. Enjoy.

With several key in-house contributors slated to hit unrestricted free agency in 2012, and an expectation to be active participants in free agency, the Chiefs have chosen to execute the salary cap "carry over" clause tied to the new CBA...

...Essentially, the clause means that the team will receive an extra $20 million toward the 2012 cap number, which has yet to be set.

The surplus could be used to help the team re-sign players like Dwayne Bowe and Brandon Carr.

Quietly, the Chiefs emerged as one of the NFL's best defensive teams over the second half of last season and are aiming for continuity on that side of the ball. The defensive priority before the start of free agency is to re-sign Brandon Carr, who teams with Brandon Flowers to give the Chiefs one of the NFL's best cornerback duos. If Carr isn't re-signed or protected with the franchise tag, the Chiefs will need to find a starting cornerback.

Not everyone can play for the St. Louis Cardinals or the Kansas City Chiefs, but all are invited to team up with the major athletic organization of their choice to build 35 houses this summer with Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity.

Gov. Jay Nixon on Thursday was in Joplin to encourage volunteers to autograph a sign-up sheet for this summer's Governor's Joplin Habitat Challenge. He said he would like to have 3,000 to 5,000 people join the rolls at www.mo.gov.

Campbell could be an interesting option for the Chiefs. He would reunite with Jim Zorn, who is Kansas City's quarterbacks coach. Zorn was Washington's head coach in 2008-09 when Campbell was the starter. The Chiefs' brass has said Matt Cassel will get competition this season. Fellow free agent Kyle Orton finished the season as Kansas City's starter.

Earlier this week the Dolphins signed CFL standout Jerome Messam, adding depth to the team's tailback unit. On Thursday the team announced the signing of defensive back Quinton Lawrence, whom the Kansas City Chiefs selected in the sixth-round of the 2009 draft.

McClain, 27, is about to become an unrestricted free agent after spending the 2011 season with the Kansas City Chiefs. Although Williams announced his retirement, the buzzing around the Ravens is that there is still a possibility Williams could return.

But if that doesn't happen by the time free agency begins March 13, the Ravens and McClain's agent should begin talking about a deal to bring him back to the Charm City.

The granddaughter of Trenton residents has been chosen as a Kansas City Chiefs cheerleader for the 2012 season.

Courtney Brinser of Liberty was among 26 young women chosen for the squad, which will perform at Chiefs football games as well as participate in other community-related activities.

Steve from Kansas City: Would going for a player like Jimmy Clausen (via a trade or free agent add if cut) be a better than a veteran that the chiefs are reportedly interested in like Orton, Campbell, Garrard or Manning.

BW: Nah, not a big Clausen guy. Maybe if Weis was still there. I'd go for someone like Campbell or Orton over Clausen. He's young, but that may be one of his few values.

Activating the salary cap carry-over clause

Given that they have $60+ million to spend anyway + another $20 million in carry-over, you have to think they’re planning big, big things. This can only be good news for those that want to see the Chiefs resign both Bowe and Carr.

Planning big,big things?

We’re talking Hunt & Pioli right?

Well we’ll see,but I don’t think it’ll happen. If the Chiefs don’t re-sign them then they have no excuses in regards to cap space, but they can use “the right 53 excuse”.

Hunt still needs to make the money back he used for his part in the stadium.

Part of that 60 million is the carry over

At least that’s my understanding

I wonder if they plan to go ahead and lock up Albert with the money...
Very impressed with Clark Hunt on this one...

to me this shows he IS willing to spend, something I have worried about the last couple years. Lets hope he backs it up though and does some good things this offseason. Maybe they just wanted to wait til the right time to strike…

Talk is cheap...

Based on the frequency of calls and emails received from the team about renewing tickets it looks like the sales team asked the boss for a public shot in the arm.

That automated call from Romeo sealed the deal for me.

Man we made them work this year looking for an additional seat

Ended up sliding about half a section towards midfield

Nice. We’re almost to midfield, just want to move lower.

Now go get PEYTON!!
Is Manning

The new Godwin

Heh, "As an AP discussion grows longer, the probability of a reference involving Peyton Manning approaches 1."

Really, he’s just this year’s Aubrayo Franklin.

interesting ...

50 uses for baking soda

so much one can do with something so simple …

(Dear Peyton: please retire, it’s for your own good)

is

‘turning cocaine into crack’ on that list? Gotta be top 50…

given some of the off-season and wild-trade scenarios we've had posted lately one might think that's a strong possibility

(angelic smile)

Dude! We should totally trade Tyson Jackson to the Colts for their #1 pick!

Then we can take Luck and still grab an offensive linemen at #11/12!

We trade Piscatelli to the Browns

for both 1st this year and a 1st next year

No on Clausen

I would rather Brady Quinn come in over him

I wonder if we're letting McClain walk?

Doesn’t seem smart. Are they really that high on Bannon? McClain played pretty well when given the chance.

I'm wondering if he even wants to stay?

He seemed to be a team guy all the way. But, we barely used him it seems. Not sure if he’s happy about getting a few carries a game, if that.

hope we DO re-sign McClain ... and I'd like to see him get more carries

like anything else, he has to like his role and contract and situation here more than someplace else

you bet

he didn’t garner much interest on the open market last year
Haley didn’t use him right, but Romeo seemed to give him more looks after Haley was gone

I could see Romeo bringing him back

So why the hold up?

Free agency isn’t that far away. Why wait till the last minute?

It may depend on Mcclain

He left Baltimore because he wanted a bigger role in the offense. With them bringing in Vonte Leach, his role would have shrank to minimal with the Ravens.

He may still be seeking more opportunities, to run the ball and to be paid well for those runs. He likely will get a long term FB contract offer from us, but not much more than that.

actually, all teams wait

really, nobody starts talking about contracts until the Combine and after.

you’ll see a lot of new deals signed after Feb 28, before Mar 13th

happens every year

Very true

But, being patient sucks.

Got to have Bowe

They have got to keep Bowe,he is a big part of this offense, always a chief should remain a chief.this so called new attack offense should make him that much better.

I still think Bowe is going to wait and see who calls...

He could very well end up back here. But, I think he’ll see who else is interested first.

Just a gut feeling.

I have the same feeling about Carr.

And really…can you blame them if they do?

Well, if they're just doing it to do it, then yes.

I think they’ll both get a very nice contract from the Chiefs, and they should stay with the team that brung em, as they say.

But if they’re more interested in a slightly bigger contract for big contract sake, then more power to em.

I'm still wondering if Bowe pulled a Tamba

And just didn’t allow his agent to negotiate a contract during the season, getting his value up, and putting the pressure on the team to offer a high value deal in the end to keep him.

With Carr’s “I want money” gesture during the season, I’m betting he was negotiating with the team, but was seeking more than they were offering initially.

1 of those 2 is going to get tagged before free agency starts if we dont have them re-signed by then

There’s no way we let them both test the market and walk. My bet is they tag Bowe considering his tag value is lower than Carr’s, and they try and work something out with Carr before the deadline. With the 60 million or so that we have in cap space there is no reason we can’t re-sign them both, McClain and some big time FA QB we’ve all heard about a million times since the season ended. Even then we’d have room left to maybe pick up some beef for the OL or DL. The balls in Hunt and Pioli’s court…

Orton?

or Matt Flynn?

What is our

actual salary cap for this year, or close to it isnt set in stone yet, or is it?

John Clayton

reported that it was 62.99 million. not sure if he was guessing, but i dont think the cap for next year is set in stone yet, but the number will be around that.

Also, that includes the 24 million we carried over.

62.99 million

does not sound like a guess…though 78.3% of statistics are made up on the spot, so….
