Casey Wiegmann is the last man standing. At one point, the Chiefs front five featured a line-up that included multiple potential Hall of Famer candidates like Willie Roaf, this year's inductee, Will Shields and Brian Waters. Wiegmann was the starting center for that group, forming perhaps the best offensive line in NFL history. Yet after the loss of Waters last season to the Patriots, Wiegmann is the only man left. And now he might be leaving himself.
Last season, the Chiefs invested a high draft pick in Rodney Hudson, grabbing the Florida State interior lineman in the second round. The assumption was that Hudson was Wiegmann's heir apparent and even though he only started one game, Hudson earned playing time in every game last season. He might now be ready to seize the starter's role.
At the very least, Bob Gretz believes that Wiegmann is likely finished with the Kansas City portion of his career. He writes:

After 16 seasons, Casey Wiegmann appears to have retired. He was unwilling in the last week of the 2011 season to confirm his departure, but the 38-year-old acted and talked like a player who was bowing out -- and he cleaned out his locker. Despite nagging injuries, Wiegmann finished with more than 11,100 consecutive snaps. It’s time for both Wiegmann and the Chiefs to move on.
Hudson is the most logical choice to replace Wiegmann if he's gone, but there are other veteran options available like New England's Dan Koppen. This is also an strong draft for guards and centers as well, so Pioli could find value in a later round to provide depth and competition along the line. Either way, a storied member of the Chiefs franchise could be finished.

yeah always liked weigs, there not much left in the tank for weigs.
the only chance he comes back if the chiefs were to welcome him back, is if peyton manning comes to kc. i think weigs might give it one more go, if manning comes, have one more shot at a ring for weigs

thank you for your service, Casey
He was a warrior for the Chiefs, but it’s his time to retire.
Hudson is more than capable

Agreed, can"t add to that
theothertonyg - February 18, 2012
My thoughts as well
I get tired of some people bashing on Casey, though. The guy played his ass off for us. For a long time. Maybe too long…yes. But he did all that was asked of him. What more could you want from a player?
Scott B. - February 18, 2012
Weigmann was one of the best
Offensive Lineman to play the game. While he may never get a bust in Canton, he was the anchor on that 2003 line.
Despite everywhere else you have played (even in Donkeyville), you were my favorite OL guy. You are a Chief and will always be one.
Hard to believe back then, Casey was the weak link in that line back then.

For the sake of the Kansas City Chiefs I hope he is done.
For the sake as him as a player I wish he wouldn’t.
kcgiant06 - February 18, 2012
Agreed
The Chiefs need to move on from him.
Playing 11,100 Consecutive Snaps is no small feet regardless of your position. That means you are in on every huddle, every snap.
The dude was a workhorse for the Chiefs. If Hudson can do even half of what Casey did for the Chiefs, I will be impressed.

OK...Now we need to back up Hudson for rotational & depth reasons...
You remember Depth don’t you Mr. Pioli ?… It’s the lack of which kept us out of the Playoffs…
KCChef - February 18, 2012
Depth? We had plenty of it.
A crazy coach in a pissing contest with upper management is what kept us out of the playoffs.
MountainManMike - February 18, 2012
yeah we had plenty of depth thats why we had
Richardson starting at RT
Palko starting at QB
Urban Starting at WR
Battle starting at RB
McGraw/Piscatelli starting at S
only TWO OT on the entire roster now
We Had/Have PLAYERS but not DEPTH
Lack of depth is indeed what kept us 1 game short of being defending AFC West champs again.
slackator - February 18, 2012
Listen to your last statement...
Teams that lack depth are not a dropped pass away or blocked field goal away from being divisional champs. Sure, we could improve in some places but tell me how many of those guys were Haley guys? We had 4 extremely important players go down to injury. Teams that have no depth go 4-12 or worse when injuries occur. We were fine and almost made the playoffs. We need to remember that this is not a four team fantasy football league.
MountainManMike - February 19, 2012
GB won the SB with half of its team on IR
Why? Because they had DEPTH and not just BODIES. We have/had BODIES and we need DEPTH. If we had talent at just ONE of those positions as backups we could have still made the playoffs even with our injuries
We have for the most part a great starting crew but now we need to work on their backups for the purpose of stopping what happened this year from happening
slackator - February 19, 2012
Yet GB still had the man their offense was built around...
for most of their season. Talk to me when they lose Rodgers and their top two WR’s…and their defensive cornerstone for the entire season. Let me know how far they go then.
MountainManMike - February 19, 2012
Koppen= no!
chief Stevie_k - February 18, 2012
I'd rather have Koppen than Wiegmann at this point.
But only for depth. Hudson needs to start.
MtHammer - February 18, 2012
Let him retire,
then hire him as the assistant O-Line Coach. Weigmann has been awesome for us. I’d like to see him go on a positive note, and not be relegated as a back up.
TXChiefan - February 18, 2012
FANTASTIC Idea!
And it would keep Weigs sobering veteran voice in the locker room too!
CurtMerzFan - February 18, 2012
add him with Shields who wants to get into coaching
and it shouldnt be long before this line is great again with the talent of coaches we’d have
slackator - February 18, 2012
Times change, and time passes.
It is the way of all things. If it is time for Casy to hang them up, he has 11,100 consecutive snaps to look back on. Let me say that again……“11,100 consecutive snaps!” Any foot ball fan worth his salt can truthfully say proudly, “Casey Wiegman was a Kansas City Chief”. Though not all of those snaps came with the Chiefs, Casey embodies what it is to be a warrior for the Chiefs. Hats off to you, Casey.
G.L. - February 18, 2012
Chief Weigs, I salute you.
Pacific Chief - February 18, 2012
Yep, Weigs is totally awesome but it's time.
I worry about C though because Hudson never got to play it. I think the Chiefs really should have forced Casey to rotate rather than go for the record. A rotation would have been better for the team that is the Chiefs.
kabrink - February 18, 2012
I think it's Hudson time
Thank you for everything you’ve done for us Casey.
