I will never stop being amazed at the level of interest in the NFL. The season has been over for a couple of weeks but it doesn't feel as if the coverage of the NFL has changed. The 2012 NFL Combine is coming up next week and a couple weeks after that we'll be hitting free agency (March 13).
Take BenJarvus Green-Ellis as an example. He's a solid running back scheduled to hit free agency. The Chiefs could need a running back with Thomas Jones and Jackie Battle set for free agency. Thus, we're seeing a ton of talk about "The Law Firm" in KC.

Evan Silva of Pro Football Talk: "Green-Ellis knows Daboll's system. One of NFL's top short-yardage/goal-line backs. Could be power complement to
Josh Looney of KCChiefs.com: When Charles was lost for the year to an ACL injury, the Chiefs lacked an explosive runner who could log 20 carries week-in and week-out. Green-Ellis brings experience as both a role player and a feature back, which is something the Chiefs might find appealing.
Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston: As for a possible market for Green-Ellis, the Chiefs could be on the radar, as Josh Looney writes on KCChiefs.com today. In 2008, when the Patriots signed Green-Ellis as a rookie free agent out of Mississippi, it was one of the top coups for the Patriots' personnel staff that year. Scott Pioli, now Chiefs general manager, was in charge of the Patriots' personnel department at the time.
Jimmy Toscano of CSNNE.com: They've got Jamaal Charles and Dexter McCluster locked up for next season. Assuming Charles is healthy (he tore his ACL last season), he'll be their top back. But the Cheifs still need a power back like Green-Ellis to balance the ying-yang of the running back position.
William Del Pilar of Pro Football Weekly: BenJarvus Green-Ellis is a free agent, and right now, his best fit outside of New England would be the Chiefs because of his ties with the K.C. staff. The Chiefs' short-yardage specialist, Thomas Jones, was ineffective, and Green-Ellis would replace Jones and complement Jamaal Charles, who is coming off an ACL injury.
Matt Conner of SB Nation Kansas City: The Chiefs are likely to look for some running back help at some point, although most of that talk has come through mock drafts. Miami's Lamar Miller or Temple's Bernard Pierce are a couple of names appearing in the later rounds linked to the Chiefs. However, free agency offers a few possibilities, and the strongest is likely Patriots free agent BenJarvus Green-Ellis.
Bill Williamson of ESPN.com: Recently, I received a mailbag question from David G. of Topeka, who asked if I think New England free-agent running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis would be a good fit in Kansas City. Green-EllisYes, David, I do. I could easily see The Law Firm practicing in Kansas City in 2012.
Rotoworld: The notion gained popularity hours after Rotoworld's Evan Silva tweeted that the fit made sense due to Green-Ellis' history with GM Scott Pioli, familiarity with Brian Daboll's offense, and the short-yardage prowess to complement to Jamaal Charles. The Chiefs have plenty of cap room, and both Jackie Battle and Thomas Jones are free agents.
KFFL: New England Patriots impending free-agent RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis would be a good fit for the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs will likely be looking for a running back to pair with RB Jamaal Charles (knee), who is coming back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Impending free-agent RB Thomas Jones likely won't be brought back and while RB Jackie Battle likely could have a future in Kansas City, an upgrade may be needed.

this is on my off-season wish list.
chief Stevie_k - February 18, 2012
it's one that makes a lot of sense
Like Lilja a couple yrs ago, or Breaston last year, seems to always be one or two guys destined to become Chiefs
stagdsp - February 18, 2012 via mobile
BGE and Soliai
chief Stevie_k - February 18, 2012
Soliai would be real nice
As would Grubbs
But, I am realistically thinking a FA group of: BGE, Koppen, Rogers and Carlson or Dreessen would be Pioli’s style
stagdsp - February 18, 2012 via mobile
I just think he's going to do something more than dabbling this year. that's all.
But I agree on BGE, Grubbs and Carlson
chief Stevie_k - February 18, 2012
New England's scraps
I don’t what the upside is in signing a RB that is being let go by a team that is weak at the position itself. If New England doesn’t need him, why do we? Many other cheap RBs available out there that can produce.
Rollo80 - February 18, 2012
*don't know what
typo
Rollo80 - February 18, 2012
NE has 2 2nd/3rd rd draft picks
Plus Woodhead at RB
They aren’t hurting
stagdsp - February 18, 2012 via mobile
Well maybe not
hurting but it’s not a strong position for them. Woodhead is just a 3rd down type back. I think it just shows that NE knows Green-Ellis will be easy to replace.
Rollo80 - February 18, 2012
maybe they owe us for letting brian waters walk?
conspiracy anyone?
chad unit - February 18, 2012
Ummm, they could try to keep him and we could still get him
That’s how free agency works.
If BGE does end up in KC, it is possible that we outbid the Pats
PVChiefsfan - February 19, 2012
Thanks for the tip
Money isn’t the issue, he’s just another back to the pats. So yeah it’s good business to pay more then what most consider the best personal managed team in the nfl.
Rollo80 - February 19, 2012
Ditto...
but no cheap alternative. Hunt has already said money would be spent this offseason. If we walk away with Bush, Manning, and Nicks out of free agency then they can draft a damn tackle in the first round if they want. Another option would be to sign one and draft Richardson instead of signing Bush. I know it’s not the Chiefs brass’ forte to be active in free agency but this year I’ll be really disapointed if we aren’t.
Simon from KC - February 18, 2012
We're getting Matt Forte?
Awesome!
Chief-blinders-on - February 18, 2012
Meh, these are scraps I'd take all day, every day, I don't know what else to say.
severn58 - February 18, 2012
Every free agent is being "let go" by a team. Why sign anyone, then?
And we don’t even know that New England isn’t going to try to re-sign him. In fact, the odds are pretty good that he plays for the Patriots next year. But they do have Woodhead and spent (iirc) two draft picks on running backs last year, so we might be able to get him.
MtHammer - February 18, 2012
My point
is that I really don’t think he’s very good, coming from the patriots he gets more attention then he deserves. To be honest I feel he is equal to Jackie Battle and signing him really isn’t improving anything at RB. Just my opinion.
Rollo80 - February 18, 2012
Rollo, have you watched him play?
He is exactly what we need in in the backfield.
Pacific Chief - February 18, 2012
Yes
He is a hard runner that does a good job getting yards after contact, he’s smart, understands pass protection, and catches the ball well for a power back. But he wears down to easily during the course of a game/season due to his lack of ability to make guys miss. He is always banged up and injuries will only continue to increase over the next few seasons as he is not the type of back who will normally have a long career.
Yes he is a serviceable back, but I believe the chiefs need more. Jamaal may not be ready for the start of the season next year. Also we don’t know how productive he will be regardless during his first year returning from the injury. We need a back that can carry the load if needed and someone capable of doing it all.
Rollo80 - February 18, 2012
LaMichael James
Steve_Chiefs - February 18, 2012
LaMichael James would be great
But I don’t think he is the compliment back to Charles that we need like say Bush or the Law Firm
waiting4aplayoffwin - February 19, 2012 via Android app
It is the fantasy football effect
Because he score a lot of TD’s he must be great…right? No, not really
saints_chiefsfan1979 - February 18, 2012
Wouldn't hate signing Green-Ellis...but I'd rather have Michael Bush any day.
Scott B. - February 18, 2012
I wanna go out and give Bush real money to stay here for a while...
I always thought he could be a top ten guy if it wasn’t for that damn McFadden. He would be the perfect one two punch with JC. Not so hot on the law firm but I been putting the Bush on a pedastool for a while now…
Simon from KC - February 18, 2012
Bush has a lot of tread on his tires and is at the wrong side of 30
I like Isaac Redmond and draft LaMichal James , who we have to have
saints_chiefsfan1979 - February 18, 2012
Bush is on the best side of 30...
He is 27 years old. Confused maybe? I feel like he is the hammer to go with Charles’ speed.
rondon - February 18, 2012
Law firm or Bush
I’d be fine with that. Battle did okay last year,… he just looks like hes running in molasses, no second gear. We need a bigger back that can still hit the secondary fast
tomachop - February 18, 2012
The Law Firm! Charles, Dex, Killer Bs with Griffin the 3rd tossin the pig skin
Now that would be fun to watch!
ArrowheadHunter - February 18, 2012
Not a high average guy but has a nose for the endzone
Upgrade over everyone else besides JC? Yup, sign him up
RamX21 - February 18, 2012
Signing him would make sense for K.C.
He is upgrade over Battle and great replacement for aging Jones.
He don’t command big bucks. Oh, other thing I really like about this guy is he don’t fumble…ever! That’s why he would be a perfect fit for K.C.
angrydeafman - February 18, 2012
I'll pass.
Rather draft LaMichael James in the 3rd round.
.Robert - February 18, 2012
good plan
That way you have a backup for McCluster
stagdsp - February 18, 2012 via mobile
I can't tell if that was sarcasm or what.
.Robert - February 18, 2012
kinda
He’s good, but would project to be the same type of player as Dex, so I don’t see the fit for KC.
stagdsp - February 18, 2012 via mobile
Big thumping backs are a dime a dozen
Guys with James explosion aren’t. We have to have this guy
saints_chiefsfan1979 - February 18, 2012
Agree :)
I do so like to agree with you!
Steve_Chiefs - February 18, 2012
you cant give him significant carries
He’s a Dex/Sproles guy, and KC has one already
stagdsp - February 18, 2012 via mobile
That's true, with Al Davis gone there will be a surplus of extremely fast guys who aren't that good at football.
sea_people - February 19, 2012
why not sign Law Firm and draft LMJ
IPWT2009 - February 18, 2012
Boooo
BJGE is just another Patriots RB who doesnt have good acceleration or speed, but benefits from the system and playing with brady.
His longest plays of each season is not impressive at all, and his average per carry is lacking.
I could see BJGE rolling out about 3.1 average with Cassel at the helm in KC.
KC should go for Tolbert. Hillis, or draft a RB in the draft like Lamar Miller, Pead, or James.
andrew33 - February 18, 2012
or
Trent Richardson if he falls and no other team gives the team a kings ransom to move up
andrew33 - February 18, 2012
Hillis actually makes a lot of sense for the Chiefs...
I think that could be a perfect union.
Chief-blinders-on - February 18, 2012
I'd be fine with this
makes a lot of sense, upgrades the power run, he doesn’t fumble and would be useful at the goal line…now just have to get him there
JMagsKC1 - February 18, 2012 via Android app
I agree. BJGE would not have a good year with a team that runs first passes second.
I would rather have FA Hillis, Tolbert, or Richardson in the 1st. We can get our OT and G in the 2-3 rd of the draft.
Mustang fever - February 18, 2012
I'm still not sold on drafting 1st round running backs.
And Hillis has durability, consistency, and attitude questions and is likely looking for a big payday (though I don’t know if he’ll get it).
I could definitely get behind Tolbert, though.
MtHammer - February 18, 2012
I don't get the love for Hillis
He is way overrated. He is a big back but that’s about all I can say good about him
waiting4aplayoffwin - February 19, 2012 via Android app
Tolbert kills us everytime he touches the ball...
We need him in Red & Yellow…
KCChef - February 18, 2012
Green-Ellis sucks
this would be a bad idea. The Pats hardly used him because he’s just not that good. We need a real #2 HB that can get the short yardage but he’s not it. Our FB if we resign him could do it or even Battle is better short-yardage than this guy. Please don’t sign him. There are many other players out there worth signing but he is not one of them.
Nicoloco - February 18, 2012
Hillis
would look damn good in a Chiefs uni and him and Charles together in a backfield, look the fuck out! Defenses will be seriously worried. Hillis will break their necks and Charles will pop their Achilles’.
Nicoloco - February 18, 2012
McClain > Hillis
stagdsp - February 18, 2012 via mobile
You have to factor in having Brian Daboll with Hillis...
They were good together.
Chief-blinders-on - February 18, 2012
true
I always say that McClain is a similar player to Hillis, but McClain has a better attitude and is cheaper, and already a part of the Chiefs
stagdsp - February 18, 2012 via mobile
I really like McClain...
There is nothing saying the Chiefs can’t have both backs…
Goal line sets with Hillis and McClain equal money in the endzone potentially.
Chief-blinders-on - February 18, 2012
Jerome Harrison
Steve_Chiefs - February 18, 2012
ate up the Chiefs in 2009
in a game that featured no Glenn Dorsey.
The one thing that makes me question trading big Glenn.
Chief-blinders-on - February 18, 2012
I like Tolbert, too.
Nicoloco - February 18, 2012
Although Tolbert is benefits from being from a Pass - Centric offense too...
The guy’s a ripped bowling ball w/ speed…( See T. Jones in his prime)…
KCChef - February 18, 2012
DRAFT
Once you join The Firm, you can never leave. Drafting a RB would cost less and if we picked a RB as early as, say, the 3rd round, he likely would be a better player than Green-Ellis — like Chris Polk or (please God let him fall to us in the 3rd) Doug Martin. Same with re-signing Battle. Re-sign Battle for depth (for less than the Firm will make), then draft a true #2 RB who would be better than the both of ’em. Better player for less money = USE THE DRAFT.
jmdesimone - February 18, 2012
If you dont get the law firm i would like ryan grant as an alternative
BSchief - February 18, 2012
KGE is a solid reliable rb
OSU’s Herron is a young Thomas Jones Chiefs talked too available in 4th
FrankPitts - February 18, 2012 via mobile
I would love the Law Firm" to be in a Chief's uniform, but I wouldn't overpay for him.
I think the guy could help the Chiefs regain their position as the top rushing offense in the league. He would be a great fit, in my opinion, but he still would likely be more a change of pace back, depending on how well Charles recovers from his injury. I wouldn’t give him a salary that is considered to be in the range of the top RB’s in the league, as the position can likely be addressed with a later round draft pick, or possibly a lesser name FA. I do think where Green-Ellis is a proven commodity, that there are some teams that will be willing to overpay for his services. I wouldn’t get into a major bidding war for him. Just my opinion.
Racyman - February 18, 2012
I don't think BJGE is going to command too much money in FA...
It’s basically Matt Forte, Ray Rice and then everyone else. Because Arian Foster ain’t going nowhere…
Peyton Hillis, Marshawn Lynch, Mike Tolbert, Cedric Benson, Michael Bush, Ryan Grant are also some favorite choices among many (I really like Hillis.)

yeah honestly these "free agent" lists that pop up on other websites get frustrating to me
becaues guys like
brees, arian foster….arent going anywhere. so why do we even pretend that they will, they deserve their own catagory of “will re-sign with team”
SDChief - February 19, 2012
from what I read on ESPN Arian Foster could indeed be lost by Houston
because they are severely cash strapped and have to resign both Foster AND Mario Williams to max contract deals so I wouldnt count out Foster just yet
slackator - February 19, 2012
yeah we will see. but brees? no. and as for foster, i still think something gets done or he gets tagged after mario signs his deal
SDChief - February 19, 2012
for Houstons sake
I hope your right. I actually like Houston and it would suck for them to finally break thru into a playoff team only to lose everyone in salary cap hell. People jump all over Hunt for being cheap but Id rather be a team on the cusp with 30-50 million to play with than a team on the cusp and OVER the cap.
slackator - February 19, 2012
It is amazing
I was watching the longest game ever played between KC and Miami on the NFL network and the NFL had a blackout policy that the home team sellout or not, couldn’t view the game, a playoff game. Can you imagine if that happened today, there would be riots. This game has evolved into a 12 month sport. America can’t get enough NFL
saints_chiefsfan1979 - February 18, 2012
True
Steve_Chiefs - February 18, 2012
We need a QB!
I’d like to see KC draft Kellan Moore out of Boise State. He should still be there, and he’s got great pocket presence and a hell of an arm.
ChieflyOptimistic - February 18, 2012
actually man
The knock on him is that he has a high school arm
chief red foreman - February 18, 2012 via mobile
College arm with a college physique
Steve_Chiefs - February 18, 2012
neither scream nfl
chief red foreman - February 18, 2012 via mobile
Not sure where you heard this, but it's bull...
Moore is taller than Drew Brees and often threw the long ball in his college career. And what he doesn’t have in height, he makes up for in pocket presence. It would be a great pick, so I’m sure we won’t go for him.
ChieflyOptimistic - February 19, 2012
Id take him
but the reports coming out of the Senior Bowl was that he was rattled and had a noodle arm, in his case Ill look at his play on the field during the actual season and that is can make the throws and his only losses came when the usually clutch kicker missed chip shots
slackator - February 20, 2012
ellis
hasnt fumbled in 4 years. not to metion he is not going to start. he will be a complimentry player.
Sinny - February 18, 2012
no knock on green ellis
this is no knock on green ellis but let me say it thunder!!! a thunder back ,we have enough lightning ala charles ,and mccluster get a thunder back if not richardson then someone in the third or fourth round or even better raiders michael bush … pound
a back that take the gas out of defenses…..
vess - February 18, 2012
saying no to hillis
peyton hillis was a good back coming out of no where he was sensational his first year with the browns . but this year attitude overule injuries i have a tummy ache now because you can’t pay me ,come on guys this guy is nothing more than a whiner !!! If i cannot get paid then my tummy hurts and my feet hurt or ,well you get the message .i do not want a quitter on this football team ,yes he quit on the browns because he did not get his deal .matt forte did not get a deal and he did his job with class ,i say no to the whiner
vess - February 18, 2012
Wherever Forte goes
…his pockets are gonna be swollen!
mistamic - February 18, 2012
I blame the dreaded Madden Curse
on all that happened with Hillis. I’d gladly welcome him to the Chiefs.
5280ChiefsFan - February 19, 2012
Me, too.
I never truly believed it, but what happened to Hillis was FREAKY. But even still he had good games, and I wouldn’t mind him coming to KC.
NigerianNightmare - February 19, 2012
I'd like to have the Law Firm here in KC but....
I’m curious to see if he’s really that good or if he’s a product of the Belichick Way.
mistamic - February 18, 2012
It's not like Bill Belichick is known for producing running backs.
I would argue that most Patriots running backs had better years with other teams.
Chief-blinders-on - February 18, 2012
yes and it has been a failed position for them
heck, kevin faulk inactive(still shocks me to this day, i dont get it, never will to be honest)
maroney was a total bust.
they seemed to get lucky with ridley, and thats why we may be lucky enough to land green-ellis.
SDChief - February 19, 2012
this guy set a record for most carries without a fumble to start a career.
those claiming he only looks like a good signing because he played for the pats….that statistic is one that no matter the team is flippin impressive.
please sign green ellis, along with b-carr
