We may have some news on the Kansas City Chiefs coaching soon. Really soon.
Romeo Crennel talked with Soren Petro and Co. on 810 WHB this afternoon and Crennel said he hopes to have the staff complete "soon".
"One of those things that pops up with Bill Muir retiring so now I have to extend my search because I need an offensive line coach," Crennel said. "We are going to work through it but I think relatively soon we'll be able to tell everybody who we have and how we're gonna go forward."
As for a timetable, Crennel said he hoped to get some things done over the weekend. So we might be hearing about the Chiefs coaching staff very soon.
To review, the Chiefs are still looking for an offensive coordinator, offensive line and receivers coach.

got a question is the ski mask guy protesting the fact that the chiefs haven't won a playoff game in 18 years.
I hope SB nation is making some coin buy putting this guy on the site.

SDChief - February 2, 2012
Good to hear.
On another note, can we PLEASE get rid of the Delocated advertisements?
They are painful to look at…not that I am looking on purose.

Thanks slack
Just installed the adblocker on Chrome. Easy and no more weird dude in his underware on my screen!
Bassbustin - February 2, 2012
or did pioli suspect he was carrying a wire when he came to work today
niageriannit1 - February 2, 2012
Didn't he just say a few days ago that it would be a couple of weeks?
Or did I miss a few days and that was actually a couple of weeks ago.
GenericBrand - February 2, 2012
I don't recall him ever saying that.
Tarkus - February 2, 2012
Hmmm
Maybe I’m going crazy.
GenericBrand - February 2, 2012
Well, both things could be true.
I just don’t remember him being that specific.
Tarkus - February 2, 2012
"Soon" is such a relative term...
Tomahawk29 - February 2, 2012
But I love "Soon"

Yup, it only leaves you guessing.
Guessing bout a thing you really ought to know—woah—woah….
Yeah, I know I mixed that up. I just really like Zeppelin.

I didn't get to hear the interview...
…but one thing piqued my interest about the quote in this article… He mentioned the search for an O-Line Coach, but said nothing about a Offensive Coordinator. Hmm, makes you wonder if he has already selected one…
JQuest - February 2, 2012 via Android app
I just take that to mean that the OL coach search is new.
Tarkus - February 2, 2012
yep
Chiefs_swagger - February 2, 2012
Which is interesting in itself.
Brsrkr - February 2, 2012
Yeah.
Sounds like RAC expected him to stay on.
Tarkus - February 2, 2012
When did the Raiders' O line coach get let go?
Brsrkr - February 2, 2012
Dunno.
Tarkus - February 2, 2012
Well, earliest mention I found on a quick Google news search is yesterday.
Might’ve had an effect, I suppose.
Brsrkr - February 2, 2012
"Soon" is not specific enough!
I want exact times, to the second, and exact coordinates of when and where this announcement will be made, and who exactly, to the middle name, it will be.

how awesome would it be
To have Saunders as OC,
Shields as OL coach
stagdsp - February 2, 2012 via mobile
I wouldn't complain in the least.
Eastcoastransplant - February 2, 2012
Why is Shields' name popping up?
Pure speculation or is there some rumor going around?
Tomahawk29 - February 2, 2012
Yesterday
he indicated that he’d like to get into coaching sooner rather than later. Of course, he needs to start as an assistant line coach before being given the whole ball of wax.
Tarkus - February 2, 2012
That WOULD be @&$!*$# sweet!
Tomahawk29 - February 2, 2012
Shields...
doesn’t need to assist anyone. he could jump right in and be the head lines coach.
12t - February 2, 2012
Yeah, I don't see why this couldn't be true.
O line coach is already technically an assistant. If the HC and OC think he can handle it, why not?
Brsrkr - February 2, 2012
Because he's never done it before?
There is a lot more to being the OL coach than just teaching technique. He has to develop strategy, help with gameplanning, manage various personalities, etc. Just because he was a great player doesn’t mean he’d be a great coach, especially on his first day on the job.
Tarkus - February 2, 2012
He's not an ex-golfer
trying to be a HC. Can he coach? Who knows, but if Crennel thinks he can work well with him that would be good enough for me.
12t - February 2, 2012
Well, I personally don't think that will happen.
So will it be good enough for you when Crennel doesn’t hire him as the OL coach?
Tarkus - February 2, 2012
RAC also said he'd like to have Kyle Orton back with the team
Personally, I found that promising. I think Pioli will at least respect RAC enough to make a play for Orton.
Chief Willie Wildcat - February 2, 2012
Didn’t Pioli say they would talk to Orton about his situation first?
JComp11 - February 2, 2012
Something to that effect.
Tarkus - February 2, 2012
alright, the problem here is everyone (or even anyone, really) thinking that the Coaching Staff is ever "done"
it’s never “done” but rather it’s a “work in progress” … new coaches in, old coaches out, constantly churning the coaching staff roster and, of course, the continual search for new talent
this, then, becomes the central and motivating issue as to whether the organization addresses these coaching staff needs thru free agency or the draft … and of course should the answers lie in the draft process itself, that will beg the question of “value” at our position, and if we’re better off drafting an OC early on or an OL coach and “settling” for an OC from a lower round
obviously this draft is full of OC prospects, but to rely on an unproven talent is a dangerous game, and it might be wise for the Chiefs to address this need in free agency instead, thus allowing the team to add proven talent and achieve maximum value at the same time
upamtn - February 2, 2012
Trade the OC, Oline, and WR coach picks to move up and take Indy's OC pick
km230015 - February 2, 2012
Wait what about our HCoTF?
km230015 - February 2, 2012
see, the fallacy is in thinking that one coach can carry the team
that’s a misguided perception that usually ends up in failure, look at the Rams: they got their HCotF but at what price?
no, I honestly and sincerely believe that a team needs to fill other holes in the coaching staff first, and THEN go after that HCotF type later on … and there’s always another guy out there next year, and the year after … the worst thing we could do at this juncture would be to rely on some young, untested rookie to do everything by himself without the protection and help afforded by other coaches on the team
upamtn - February 2, 2012
Oh but the fans
will moan about not having a ELITE coach to compete for championships. also about not taking chances on HCoTF and the team always settle for low picks and not goin gafter elite FA coaches.
km230015 - February 2, 2012
most likely, but anyone with half a brain (like me) knows that there have been a number of good but not "elite" HC's to win it all
upamtn - February 2, 2012
What price?
They have put together a nice staff from what I’ve seen…the rams.
12t - February 2, 2012
Really?
What’s so great about their staff?
Tarkus - February 2, 2012
they're undefeated so far
12t - February 2, 2012
not sure I completely agree with that line of thinking ...
… it might be best to actually trade back a few spots, as deep as the coaching talent is this year, perhaps get a few extra coaches to develop along the way, and even a few extra picks that we could use for next year’s coaching draft
upamtn - February 2, 2012
yea your are right
i wonder what the bust factor on 1st round OCs are?
km230015 - February 2, 2012
pretty high ... look at Haley, McDaniels, even Belichick and Crennel ...
those first rounders are always a huge risk to take, IMO
upamtn - February 2, 2012
arguing just to argue at this point....there is no problem labeling the staff as "done" because people arent talking about forever
just the upcoming season
SDChief - February 2, 2012
Already?
Wow. That was fast.
Scott B. - February 2, 2012
Don't blink when it comes to Chiefs coaching searches.
Tarkus - February 2, 2012
"soon" is a vague term
upamtn - February 2, 2012
exactly is this “soon” as in an everyday person would use it or “soon” that is copyright and trademarked by Blizzard and actually means within 5 years from now
slackator - February 2, 2012
Soon = When it's done.
Brsrkr - February 2, 2012
You mean they weren't just sitting on their thumbs this whole time?
You mean they were being secretive about their search? Shocking.
Tomahawk29 - February 2, 2012
Alright, if we hypothetically only habe three options for OC, what's your vote:
1) Al Saunders
2) Jim Zorn
3) Hue Jackson
Another Successful Tedford QB - February 2, 2012
Hue Jackson is hire on my list...
1 or 2 actually. Jim Zorn like 8th…
EricBerryYoYouScary - February 2, 2012
higher*
wow
EricBerryYoYouScary - February 2, 2012
Zorn
Chiefs didn’t let him interview with the Bears. Any new OC will bring his own staff including QB coach so that move didn’t make any sense unless he is the front runner for the position. Zorn WANTS the job. He knows the talent we have and how the Chiefs work. Looking at his resume, he is a winner. All evidence points to Zorn.
Pacific Chief - February 2, 2012
Actually, I think the HC would be making the final decisions on the staff, not the OC...
Not sure that a new OC could demand the organization and HC to release a QB coach that has spent the least year with the GM’s prize pig.
Tomahawk29 - February 2, 2012
Also, the chiefs could easily have denied the Bears the right to interview just based on the fact that
Zorn’s move would be lateral and he’s under contract in KC. Unless CHI wanted to trade something they’re just SoL.
Tomahawk29 - February 2, 2012
Saunders
slackator - February 2, 2012
Al Saunders.
Seems to fit into the time frame perfectly:
Last week, Bill Muir: “I’m not retiring”
Yesterday afternoon, Bill Muir: “I’m retiring”
Yesterday evening, Bob Gretz: “Al Saunders met with Crennel and the Chiefs this week”
Today, Crennel: “Relatively soon we’ll be able to tell everybody who we have and how we’re gonna go forward.”
Tomorrows news will have KC fans buzzing, I do believe…
Tomahawk29 - February 2, 2012
or its a super bowl coach, since that would also fit under the label of "soon"
SDChief - February 2, 2012
Instead of saying "I'm going to Disneyland!"
one of the coaches will say “I’m going to Kansas City!”
Tarkus - February 2, 2012
Or "I'm going to Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun"
KingChief - February 2, 2012
Or "I'm going to Oklahoma Joe's!"
“…in er, um, Kansas City.”
Tarkus - February 2, 2012
Could be.
But I doubt we’d be poaching an OC from either the Giants or Pats. It would be a position coach to promote. Not sure I’d be too keen on that move, considering we could have Saunders again, or even Hue Jackson. Or just promote our own position guy…
Tomahawk29 - February 2, 2012

OC – Rip Scherer
