I was reading through the (other) AP story on the Kansas City Chiefs signing Stanford Routt and noticed this from the reporter, Dave Skretta:
Routt spent several days in Kansas City before choosing the Chiefs over competing offers from Buffalo, Cincinnati, Houston, New Orleans, Minnesota and Tennessee.
We'd heard other teams were interested but didn't realize there were multiple offers on the table as the AP reports. Routt visited the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals as well. We saw some reports say he was "close" to a deal with the Bills before signing with the Chiefs.
This doesn't mean anything for the Chiefs on the field next season but I'm always interested how the rest of the league views the guys the Chiefs sign. That multiple teams were interested in Routt and he chose KC is a good feeling. Maybe it was for the money or maybe it was for the opportunity, but KC got a guy others wanted.
(And, yes, I'm ignoring the possibility that six teams offering him could be agent-driven info. Let me be happy about a signing for a while first!)

Not sure about those other teams
but Minnesota I expect to be one of the few teams looking for a #1 CB and to spend for one
KansasCityShuffle - February 20, 2012
And St. Louis?
Brsrkr - February 20, 2012
Takeaway
Routt is good.
Carr is very good.
Bowe is very good.
We need to sign Bowe so we can tag and trade Carr.
WURoyal - February 20, 2012 via mobile
keep dreaming
imo
bowe is tagged
carr is already looked at as a 3rd round comp pick
SDChief - February 20, 2012
If that’s our plan why not spend an extra few million or so to get Bowe signed, in effect purchasing the difference between a 1st and the end of the 3rd.
WURoyal - February 20, 2012 via mobile
simple. then carr is owed 10 mil if kc cant trade him
when has this team ever liked to risk that kind of money?
SDChief - February 20, 2012
I think it would be pretty easy to trade him
Chiefs447 - February 20, 2012
wow, i have to disagree.
SDChief - February 20, 2012
What would be so hard about it?
Over half the league would be after him
Chiefs447 - February 20, 2012
really? not so sure about that. do you understand its not so easy to trade a tagged player?
SDChief - February 20, 2012
You could always trade for less than a 2nd. It wouldn’t be that hard to move him.
JComp11 - February 20, 2012
Matt Cassel's trade went pretty smooth
Supply and demand baby
LHO - February 20, 2012
he would be very easy to trade
they can give permission to discuss contract extensions. whatever we get would be a bonus for getting Bowe to sign early.
Gained leverage on two players without dealing with either one.
BJ Kissel - February 20, 2012
I think it would be easy to trade Carr
He’s seen as a great corner around the league, and it doesn’t have to be two first round picks.
Didn’t we tag and trade Allen? And he had more issues off-field then Carr.
ChiefWarPaint - February 20, 2012
would not be difficult
too important of a position and he’d get that much in the deal from another team easily anyways. Would be in his best interest to seriously consider any deal for risk of playing on a ONE year deal we could STILL afford.
BJ Kissel - February 20, 2012
i agree
ChiefWarPaint - February 20, 2012
Tag & Trade hypothetical question
If we signed Bowe to a long term deal today, couldn’t we tag Carr today and start shopping him in a trade? Thus allowing someone else to get a free agent CB before free agency opens up.
The Gentry - February 20, 2012
dont believe you can trade a tagged player before the new league year begins
But I could be wrong on that.
I do think they should be giving Bowe a deadline to reach a deal that is one day before the franchise tag deadline ends though.
BJ Kissel - February 20, 2012
Can't make trades right now.
Tarkus - February 20, 2012
Gotcha
Just thinking outside the box…and outside the rules
The Gentry - February 20, 2012
That's why Manning can't be traded.
Because his bonus is due before teams can make a trade. And you’re not going to trade someone after you just gave them a $28M roster bonus.
Tarkus - February 20, 2012
Of course. I should have made this connection.
Brainfart
The Gentry - February 20, 2012
No team would want to pay Carr that much money
Without a contract worked our in advance.
nateforchiefs - February 20, 2012
They say the same thing about every franchised player
And some of them do get traded either way.
ChiefWarPaint - February 20, 2012
thats what agents are for
BJ Kissel - February 20, 2012
I don't.
Just might not get the compensation we’d hope for.
Tarkus - February 20, 2012
You kidding?
That is around what Carr is going to get anyways, and its below 10 mil btw.
andrew33 - February 20, 2012
do you not understand the concept? yes, that is what he may get anyways, but not from the team that just paid stanford routt.............................
SDChief - February 20, 2012
But thats
the risk Pioli probably would be willing to make. Pioli knows there are a lot of teams that would jump to trade a 2nd round pick for Carr (Carr is a proven CB who had a great season this year). He knows Chiefs have a lot of money to spend, and either Chiefs pay Carr 9.5 mil for one year if they cant trade him for whatever reason, or they wont let him walk away for free.
So basically traded Carr for Routt and a 2nd rounder
andrew33 - February 20, 2012
hes not taking the risk of possibly paying carr 10 million dollars, thats the point, period, it comes down to money, and the chiefs wont be paying 3 corners over 6-7 mil a year, period.
they arent letting him walk for free
for the 100th time
if he walks, kc nabs a 3rd round comp pick
SDChief - February 20, 2012
But
there are definitely teams out there that would trade a 2nd rounder for Carr. A lot of teams are high on Carr, and the sheer number of teams interested would give leverage to the Chiefs.
Worst case scenario, Carr plays for Chiefs one more year and Chiefs give him 9.5 mil. But I believe that there is legitimate league wide interest in Carr for Pioli to slap a tag on him.
andrew33 - February 20, 2012
Carr
has also had 2 or 3 bad years, many of games i cursed his name for getting burnt or letting a first down happen… and after Routt getting signed for 7M a year arguably second best CB FA it kind of screwed Carr on the asking price so his best bet would be to resign with the Chiefs for about 8 or 9 Mil… or let himself get tagged and hope he could get traded…
BlackDoom - February 20, 2012
I highly doubt Carr brings back a 1st and I bet the 3rd round pick is much closer to what he’ll get.
I’d guess at most he would bring back a mid-2nd rounder.
manofnothi - February 21, 2012
carr to stl
RG3 to KC
ArrowheadHunter - February 20, 2012 via mobile
I think it'll take a whole lot more than that...
Scott B. - February 20, 2012
evidently carr has value beyond our wildest dreams
SDChief - February 20, 2012
His legend is growing by the hour.
By the end of the day, I think people will want his number retired.
Tarkus - February 20, 2012
Maybe they can throw in Bradford, too. You know...to make it fair.
Scott B. - February 20, 2012
cmon scott, for that to happen they would want cassel :) dont you see teams wanting him to mentor their young qb, and pay him 6 mil while at it?
SDChief - February 20, 2012
I could get behind a trade that sends....
Cassel and Carr to St Louis…. and brings …..
Bradford and a 2nd round Pick to K.C..
CatChief - February 20, 2012
We might be the only ones who could fit him under the salary cap.
Brsrkr - February 20, 2012
CARR'S NUMBER ISN'T ALREADY RETIRED‽
WHAT THE FUCK, CLARK HUNT‽ WHY DON’T YOU JUST DIG UP JOE DELANEY’S CORPSE SO YOU CAN PISS ON IT‽
MtHammer - February 20, 2012
hahaha
SDChief - February 20, 2012
Whatever helps you feel better
LHO - February 20, 2012
I googled Carr a little bit ago
and a Vikings jersey with the # 34 popped up. That is something to look out for
KingChief - February 20, 2012
x
KingChief - February 20, 2012
Carr to the Pats
More likely… just my guess, but that’s only if we tag him
Spiderwomn69 - February 20, 2012
not to mention I think it makes a lot of sense outside of the Good Ole' Boys Network as well
Chris Sembower - February 20, 2012
They give us one of their #1s & I'd be down
Or maybe we give #11 & Carr to Cincy for both of their 1st rounders & a 2nd
jmcgoblue - February 20, 2012
Yah John Clayton suggested the Vikes or Titans...
Would be interested since they play a lot of zone coverage. That would be two interesting teams.
jsChiefs23 - February 20, 2012
I heard that
Brandon Carr fought a Honey Badger and won.
BetterRedThanDead - February 20, 2012
Then why the hell isn't he signed already?!
Eastcoastransplant - February 20, 2012
It definitely would take more.
Somebody earlier suggested throwing in Carr with Dorsey, our 1st, and a 3rd. It still might take more that that but it would be a start.
MtHammer - February 20, 2012
There will be some teams offering up some crazy shit for that pick...no doubt.
Scott B. - February 20, 2012
Their loss is our gain
Good for the chiefs to make this move, and good for him wanting to play for the chiefs.this can only make the team stronger and better.
chiefsfool - February 20, 2012
team speed, there is that. hes one fast guy
SDChief - February 20, 2012
Of Course he signed here
Our D is good and getting better, how could he not want to play for Romeo? Still bummed we are likely losing Carr.
Spiderwomn69 - February 20, 2012
agree. glad to see the chiefs are at least addressing the holes they create though. had they let carr go and entered the draft without a 2nd corner i would be angry
SDChief - February 20, 2012
don't hold your breath
in a pass happy league it would make sense to have 3 great corners on the lineup…
johnnyo_99 - February 20, 2012
yeah it does make sense. but one has to wonder if kc already thinks they have that, with arenas and jalil brown
SDChief - February 20, 2012
Ummm what?
WURoyal - February 20, 2012 via mobile
carr...routt.....and arenas,brown..=quite possibly what was talked about, having 3 good corners...
sigh…
SDChief - February 20, 2012
its getting really annoying having to freaking put something to cover my rear everytime i say anything that isnt 100 percent yay brandon carr, yes the chiefs will sign himn
dude, the chiefs just drafted jalil brown
the chiefs spent a 2nd on arenas who is improving
the chiefs spent 50 mil and 20 mil respectively on 2 starting corners
Carr is GONE
SDChief - February 20, 2012
Yeah
Pioli’s plan is probably to say bye to Carr, but it is logical for him to try and throw money at bowe for a long term deal, slap the tag on carr and trade him.
andrew33 - February 20, 2012
i agree, thats the smart move, the move id make if madden had a franchise tag
but its most likely not happening.
SDChief - February 20, 2012
Why not?
All that needs to happen is for Bowe to take the long term deal which Chiefs can definitely throw him a large contract. Then everything works itself out and Pioli just tags franchise tag.
andrew33 - February 20, 2012
Madden has a franchise tag...
:)
Wizeguy - February 20, 2012
Gone or tagged.... I don't think Pioli lets him walk for nothing in return....
All that hinges on Bowe getting signed of course.
BigRedChief - February 20, 2012
hes not.
if he walks, he gets a 3rd round comp pick in return
to pioli, that is not nothing
SDChief - February 20, 2012
Point taken.
BigRedChief - February 20, 2012
Why do you assume it's a third?
Isn’t it a calculation of free agents lost versus free agents gained?
Wizeguy - February 20, 2012
according to wikipedia,
So you’re right, and he’s probably right too. Cause we all know he’s gonna get paid, and will start.
Chris Sembower - February 20, 2012
Arenas was getting picked on last year as the number 3 guy. I don’t think he is an overly solid number 3. And no one has seen anything from Jalil Brown to indicate he is a solid 4 or 5, much less a 3.
WURoyal - February 20, 2012 via mobile
disagree....he got picked on early, settled down, and was a strength on the defense.
jalil brown is used as an example because they like him, they just drafted him, and hes another option
solid 4 or 5? you really have high standards for that 3 corner
SDChief - February 20, 2012
Yes the nickel corner is important.
And Arenas got picked on in December.
WURoyal - February 20, 2012 via mobile
I don't like it either
but still, getting a compnsatory 3rd round pick isn’t a total loss IMO.
shotty - February 20, 2012
I'll bet Pioli is allready working hard to construct a deal that gets a 2nd for Carr.....
Plus I am not crazy about either Brown or Arenas as a 3rd Cover CB. Arenas key value is a return guy and Brown could be more of a Safety in Nickel and Dime Packages. With an extra 2nd or 3rd pick Pioli could get a nice Cover CB to play 3rd CB.
2nd round: Minnifield (Va), Johnson (Ia St), Gilmore (SC).
3rd round: Trumaine Johnson (Mont), Hosely (VaTch), Boykin (Ga), Judie (Tx A&M)
My favorites are Gilmore, Minnifield and either Johnson.
CatChief - February 20, 2012
Arenas is a great Cover guy
We can find Returners every year in the draft.
ChiefWarPaint - February 20, 2012
Never underestimate the appeal of sticking it to the team that cut you twice per year for the next three years.
MtHammer - February 20, 2012
thats why hue jackson was an interesting option as our offensive coordinator, pure raider hate
SDChief - February 20, 2012

KCinIL - February 20, 2012

The chiefs need a proven tight end for security,Pope isnt the answer.or am i wrong as usual.

BigRedChief - February 20, 2012

Ha nope! Just too tired to learn sarcasm font
Put off today what can be done tomorrow.
How do you like the Routt signing? Did we just re-Routt Bowe and Carr’s career paths? Or maybe now we have a direct Routt set up for netting some great draft picks? Speaking of Routts, my wireless Routters been acting up. Piece of Routten junk.
shotty - February 20, 2012
He's like a white Gronkowski.
Wait, what?
go_saleaumua - February 20, 2012
so how bad
do the rams need a CB and is it a realistic option to tag and
trade carr as part of a deal with them?
MaTTDoGG12 - February 20, 2012
They need 1 REAL bad
I think they had double digits on IR in CBs alone last year
KCinIL - February 20, 2012
Good
i hope this happens, i wouldnt be mad if we threw dorsey in to make it happen. we need a QB
MaTTDoGG12 - February 20, 2012
this team, the chiefs, worry big time about spending. to trade carr off his tag along with dorsey would be such a cap hit, omg
its equal to the people talking about throwing cassel in on a deal…..aint happenin
SDChief - February 20, 2012
Trading a franchise tag is a zero cap hit
Wizeguy - February 20, 2012
Chiefs have the lowest dead money against the cap in the league
I don’t think this is an issue.
shotty - February 20, 2012
The Rams' cap would be a much bigger obstacle in that kind of trade.
Brsrkr - February 20, 2012

And to choose outta 6 teams, some of which are pretty damn good(if true of course). I likes
KCinIL - February 20, 2012
BEWARE!
Brad-KC - February 20, 2012

I can picture a great cartoon from this description
KansasCityShuffle - February 20, 2012
enter picture of carr walking out the front door here
SDChief - February 20, 2012
To his new Benz he bought after signing an extension with KC
km230015 - February 20, 2012
Maybe Routt
wasn’t looking for a #1 CB gig. I mean, he excelled as a #2 and was awful as a #1. KC might just be the perfect fit.
Brad-KC - February 20, 2012
If the list is correct(big if)
Then its a pretty telling story because he wouldve been the #1 guy on three of those teams.
GenericBrand - February 20, 2012
I doubt we end up franchising Carr.
Most players that get franchised can’t work out a long term deal with another team. That means we overpay Carr for a year and are in the same predicament next year. We’re better off letting him test the market and see what teams will pay for him. You never know, he might end up coming back. That’s what Aubrayo Franklin did with the Niners.
Vince D - February 20, 2012
What if.... wait for it.... This is just posturing to trade Flowers?
BOOM!!!
BigRedChief - February 20, 2012
Not unpossible
GenericBrand - February 20, 2012
I was just thinking that...
But then remembered they just paid him.
ArrowheadS - February 20, 2012
8.3/season is a pretty trade friendly amount for a #1 CB.
If Crennel decided he wants to run a ton of man-to-man then Carr+Routt is ideal.
GenericBrand - February 20, 2012
To a reasonable contract... all the more value to other teams.
BigRedChief - February 20, 2012
Wouldn't that be a big cap hit though?
All his bonus money would get accelerated towards the cap.
Tarkus - February 20, 2012
I couldn't tell you that....
BigRedChief - February 20, 2012
That's how it used to work.
That’s why teams were stuck with guys in the early years of big contracts. Cutting or trading them accelerates their bonus towards the cap, instead of having it spread out over the life of the contract.
Not sure if it’s still that way in the new CBA.
Tarkus - February 20, 2012
I'd say you're right
thinking Manning’s bonus money could cost Colts until 2015.
Chief Willie Wildcat - February 20, 2012
If they're cut the bonus remaining prorated bonus money ALL counts that next year
Main reason Santonio Holmes could say whatever he wants and they won’t cut him. $$$$ to cap hit would be astronomical.
BJ Kissel - February 20, 2012
If they are cut but what about traded?
BigRedChief - February 20, 2012
maybe the bonus prorated for that specific year and that's it?
Not exactly sure to be honest.
BJ Kissel - February 20, 2012
Damnit! Why not?!?!?!
BigRedChief - February 20, 2012
I'm kinda dumb
BJ Kissel - February 20, 2012
It's spelled DUM... geeze... some guys.
BigRedChief - February 20, 2012
I hear continuously that Routt isn't a bad corner, just limited in scheme and wasn't worth what the Raiders gave him
Good signing, I approve.
Its always nice to steal a guy from a division rival, especially the Raiders.
ChiefWarPaint - February 20, 2012
Yes
so can we get Bush now please?
shotty - February 20, 2012
Routt is a nice peice to have going into the chess match that is the NFL offseason.
It adds just a little bit of pressure to get a deal done with Carr (and maybe even Bowe) and as long as one of the signs a deal Pioli can Franchise the other and keep all 3.
I want to develop home grown talent like Carr, but it shouldn’t stop at just growing talent. I want to see the Chiefs keep our talent in house OR get value for the player. If Carr does not want to play in KC for the money the Chiefs are willing to spend we need to get value for him. That means sign him to a deal, franchise him then if neccissary trade him for pick(s).
So far I have supported most every move Pioli has made, even if I didn’t see/understand it at first. So far Pioli has stayed true to his word that he wants to sign home grown talent (Flowers, Hali, etc) but if he CAN’T (take two sides to make a deal happen) I hope he can find a way to get ‘value’ for Carr.
DivineGrace - February 20, 2012
The master plan
Sign Routte.
Give D-Bowe 5/55mill
tag Carr and trade him and KC 1st round pick to Rams and guess what RG3 is in KC
AngryKitty - February 20, 2012
send him to NE and get their first # 2 pick
Pick up another 4 year starter on a low deal.
BJ Kissel - February 20, 2012
I would approve of such a deal
DivineGrace - February 20, 2012
I second that
ArrowheadS - February 20, 2012
I'd rather have NE's 31st pick.
Carr is worth it, no corner they draft can come in and play right away unless they’re hoping for the next Devin McCourty. Even then he wasn’t very good his 2nd year.
ChiefWarPaint - February 20, 2012
First day pick is a first day pick...starting level talent can be had and we still have many holes to fill.
DivineGrace - February 20, 2012
Actually 2nd round begins on the 2nd day now.
ChiefWarPaint - February 20, 2012
best case scenario, maybe even one of Cincy's 1sts
might have to add a low pick of ours, could Adams fall that far (31)?
BJ Kissel - February 20, 2012
I don't think he falls that far
Wouldn’t mind a TE like Dwayne Allen.
ChiefWarPaint - February 20, 2012
I was just thinking about that this morning.
Wouldn’t that be a bad-ass matchup nightmare—a healthy Tony Mo and Allen?
go_saleaumua - February 20, 2012
I was wondering the same thing
if not him, what about Devon Still?
shotty - February 20, 2012
bonus pick, wouldn't hate it
BJ Kissel - February 20, 2012

especially if Dorsey hit the trade block.
shotty - February 20, 2012
screw that, trade up for RG3
Our first and Carr to STL for the #2 pick
Chiefsdodgerslakers2415 - February 20, 2012

tomachop - February 20, 2012
Limited market
Soliai wont cost much. 6 or less per year.
GenericBrand - February 20, 2012
won't have too many teams after him
Pitt and Houston, maybe us.
Market is shrinking and A. Franklin and Garay might be out there too.
BJ Kissel - February 20, 2012
Doubtful even Houston
Pitt, Indy and maybe Raiders if they change to 3-4. Soliai is very much a 2 down player with zero pass rush capabilities.
GenericBrand - February 20, 2012
If that's true then I don't want him.... and yes, I know what a NT does.
BigRedChief - February 20, 2012
He'd be ok for the right price
A real 2 gap NT that can dominate double teams will really open things up for Dorsey or whoever replaces him.
GenericBrand - February 20, 2012
Ahh, now he's younger than Garay and Pouha
has solid strength and size and is a run stuffing machine. Young Kelley Gregg. What we need is a stout DE that can rush and play the run while they figure out how to get Tyson better at rushing.
shotty - February 20, 2012
thats why he'll sign for so little money
doesnt play that many snaps.
we could get Shaun Rogers too. those last few games Gregg was barely out there. we mixed our DL so many times it’d hard to justify big $$ on a guy that doesnt play many snaps.
BJ Kissel - February 20, 2012
Rogers would be solid
Franklin, Garay, Pouha, Soliai…like to see at least one of these guys along with Rogers.
shotty - February 20, 2012
NT
I’ve always been a big proponent of the position. Historically, it’s been the most important position in the 3-4. However, I’m starting to change my thinking.
Someone smarter than me probably has the exact #, but this team (along with most other teams) played a TON of snaps in the nickel and dime last year. With the league skewing so much towards passing, one-dimensional run-stuffing NT’s are being devalued. I’m not saying the Chiefs couldn’t use an upgrade there, but I’d be hesitant to sink a big-money long-term deal into one. There’s (surprisingly) a lot of value at the position in FA this offseason and a few in the draft as well (Poe, Ta’amu, Chapman).
polodude017 - February 20, 2012
I hope this doesn't mean Carr is gone....
Routt is good enough, but Carr is better and younger. I guess we will have to wait and see what the puppet master has up his sleeves.
Flower_Power - February 20, 2012
I'm not happy at all
I’m happy we have a good replacement (probably replacement) for Carr, but I really want Carr Back.
AaronMannicci - February 20, 2012
I was pumped for FA and the Draft before today
but now I’m just psyched to the max. So many scenarios and possibilities right now. We have ourselves set in an incredible position and its pretty eff’n exciting.

Good stuff.

and his years mixed up with the Bowe convo
FREE JC, who then signed an EXTREMELY team-friendly deal.
But still, guy is doing his job and has been right on stuff too.
BJ Kissel - February 20, 2012
Charles hates it in KC, and can't wait to leave.
Tarkus - February 20, 2012
That's hilarious.
Considering Arrowhead Addict had to explain to Wright the other day why Routt could be signed before free agency hit. You’d think an expert such as Wright would have known such a common thing.
Tarkus - February 20, 2012
I saw that too
Rather funny.
BJ Kissel - February 20, 2012
Damn!!
Can we a payment credit on Routt as payback for the endzone pick last year?
Wichita Chief - February 20, 2012
come on
the chiefs can afford to sign bowe and carr and still have enough money to sign carl nicks, the guard from the saints.
routt could spit time at corner and nickel and shut down TEs. Top 5 defense.
michaelaglover - February 20, 2012
Routt
I’m ok with the move. Routt is a damn good #2. Gonna miss Carr…if somehow we keep all 3 then i’ll be super stoked!!!
@Monty_Bags - February 20, 2012
Our new defensive scheme:
3 man front: Tamba – Dorsey – Houston
2 LBs: DJ and Hightower
6 DBs: Flowers – Arenas – Lewis – Berry – Routt – Carr
Mix up bringing Arenas and Routt… or even Flowers…. close to the line.
Terrible Idea you say?…. Prolly.
BigRedChief - February 20, 2012
Why don't we draft Kuechly too while we're at it.
GenericBrand - February 20, 2012
Hightower MAN!!!
BigRedChief - February 20, 2012
Definitely not
Unless we’re talking about the 3rd round.

Routt had multiple offers but chose KC
Guess the whole Arrowhead Anxiety didn’t scare him.
KcChiefsMo - February 20, 2012
I’d think that Arrowhead Anxiety would scare management positions much more than players.

Long time reader first post
Given the cap availability the chiefs have this year(apparently somewhere in the neighborhood of $37-$62 million) and potential free agents in carr and bowe, I am very intrigued on how this offseason will play out. At first I was somewhat surprised to chiefs went after routt, but given what I think is a good value contract I think it makes sense. I’ve been a big carr fan and I like keeping home-grown guys around. But to me overpaying is overpaying whether a home-grown guy or not or a franchise vs. role player. I have no clue how the contract talks with carr are going but with some of the numbers that are being thrown out there I’ve started to get worried the chiefs may overpay for him. No matter what happens with carr, at least now the chiefs go into next year with two solid starting corners. Im anxious to see how it all plays out with the franchise tag and money they have available. There really are a number of options available now. I, for one hope bowe is the priority and IF we can get carr for a reasonable contract(don’t see this happening) I’d be all for having three very good corners. If it comes down to overpaying, however, I hope they allocate funds somewhere else like OL, DT, TE.
kcchiefs91 - February 20, 2012
We could get Carr for 10.5 million for the season
I would say that was the Top end
Steve_Chiefs - February 20, 2012
I think 10.5 million is just too much for carr. Around 8.5 million a year is about as high as I’d want to go now especially with the signing of routt. The good thing is the chiefs have some leverage in that they can now pretty much set the price where they want it. If carr wants to go then he can, guy deserves a big payday and someone WILL overpay for him I just dont want it to be KC.
kcchiefs91 - February 20, 2012
welcome to AP!
upamtn - February 20, 2012
wonder what Carr thinks about the Routt move
tomachop - February 20, 2012
thinking
carr clearly played much better this year than 2010 and the chiefs didnt sign him when they signed flowers because they still had doubts about his ability. now they are paying the price if he enters Free agency.
michaelaglover - February 20, 2012
By the same token
Routt played great in 2010 and got a raise because of it and now that he’s had a bad season and is going back to doing what he does best we get him at a bargain price.
GenericBrand - February 20, 2012
Yep.
Buy low, sell high. That’s a winning formula.
Tarkus - February 20, 2012
Now we just need to get in a position to sell him.
GenericBrand - February 20, 2012
3-year contract means we let him go right before his play starts to decline
The Patriot Way.
Nick Britt - February 20, 2012
With Daniels/Brown/whomever ready to take over.
Tarkus - February 20, 2012
Or other future draft picks
ChiefWarPaint - February 20, 2012
Tarkus - February 20, 2012
I want Dave Amerson
But I don’t want to suck so bad that we are in the top 10 again to pick him. ):
ChiefWarPaint - February 20, 2012
Brown or future picks.
Daniels came in the league at the same time Routt did, if I recall correctly
go_saleaumua - February 20, 2012
My thinking
I think they have Carr and Routt rated about the same. Routt may have a little more upside in our system, but Carr is younger.
I think what it came down to was length of contract and also flexibility. I think Pioli would love to have Carr back next year, but I don’t think he wants to give him a 5 or 6-year deal, which is what I think Carr is looking for. The main reason being investments in Jalil Brown and Javier Arenas, who still both have high upside, but you also don’t want to be locked into a long-term contract if you can avoid it. We couldn’t afford to sign both Flowers and Carr long-term.
We may see a small dropoff between Carr to Routt in year one, but I think we will get high level of play for the length of his contract and I don’t think that can be guaranteed with Carr over 5-6 years. Also, it now gives us the option to tag and trade Carr.
I also heard rumors that we may be considering Routt at safety, so who knows. What this does give us is options. Anytime we add a good young player to the roster, I am all for it.
Nick Britt - February 20, 2012
How does Routt have more upside in our system?
ChiefWarPaint - February 20, 2012
Because he will actually be playing in it and Carr will likely not be?
Thats my best guess.
GenericBrand - February 20, 2012
I guess lol
ChiefWarPaint - February 20, 2012
because Routt is a better zone corner?
Haven’t watched a lot of Routt but I’m guessing that is what he meant.
Lucasjr5 - February 21, 2012
I don't see "investments" in Brown and Arenas having a lot to do with this.
Neither make a ton and I can’t see Arenas as more than a slot/return guy.
polodude017 - February 20, 2012
Good sign I'm happy!
I think if pioli can still sign Carr will have the best secondary by far!!
albuquerquechiefsfan - February 20, 2012 via mobile
I'm in agreement with this signing for several reasons
I always had a fear that Carr would leave and we wouldn’t have an adequate replacement for him. We now have that in Routt. As many have mentioned above, we have an edge in the Bowe situation because if we can’t come to terms with a long-term deal we are able to franchise him.
Of course the ideal scenario to me would be to sign Bowe before the start of FA and to tag Carr and trade him for a 2nd rounder preferrably. I also like seeing the Kansas City Chiefs making the first big(ish) splash of the offseason. I hope this is setting the scene for what’s to come for us in FA. We have a lot of money, let’s use some of it.
King of the Cassel - February 20, 2012 via mobile
How come no one is saying that Pioli is getting rid of Carr because he was Peterson and Herm's draft pick?
It's pretty obvious that's whats happening. Pioli must feed his ego.worc - February 20, 2012
iv been reading that Vikings are showing interest in Carr
Be neat if we could work out some kind of deal getting their early round pick :)
chiefsman! - February 20, 2012
trade for jared allen
niageriannit1 - February 20, 2012
Finally, we can now move Arenas to his natural position...
