We haven't had a busy Monday* like this in quite a while but the Kansas City Chiefs news delivered today. The only real news was the Stanford Routt signing but that one signing has such an impact on the rest of the moves we'll see in free agency.
In case you were actually working and not reading Chiefs news all day, here's a run down of what went down today...

BEST MOVE EVER!
WORST MOVE EVER!
there, our discussion is wrapped up.
Shanghai_Chiefs - February 20, 2012
More like...
WORST FIRST POST EVER!
Wizeguy - February 20, 2012
A wizeguy eh?
Shanghai_Chiefs - February 20, 2012
Havent we signed the last two 'big' name guys available, in orton and routt?
Montana Chief - February 20, 2012 via mobile
Isn't the correct word for Orton
RENTED
Wizeguy - February 20, 2012
true, but they seem to be making moves that we often assume won't ever happen
Montana Chief - February 20, 2012 via mobile
I wonder
are there any other teams in the league that have $90 million wrapped up in cornerbacks? Even $70 million, which we now do.
Chief Willie Wildcat - February 20, 2012
Eagles
Wizeguy - February 20, 2012
Yes, Eagles
$117 million in Samuel and Asomugha.
Chief Willie Wildcat - February 20, 2012
That's not an annual fee
ChiefWarPaint - February 20, 2012
In 2012
Eagles are going to be paying $20 million for 2 corners. Oddly enough, one of them is a high priced guy Pioli let walk. I was thinking we could keep Flowers and Carr for $16 million a year, just didn’t know if it was worth it. Flowers and Routt will cost $14.76 million or thereabout.
Chief Willie Wildcat - February 20, 2012
I've heard they are cutting Samuel
At least that’s the rumors.
ChiefWarPaint - February 20, 2012
That's suck for his ego
getting cut/ let-go everywhere he goes
joplin chiefs fan - February 20, 2012
Sweet let's sign him up
maybe he can be our new water boy!
shotty - February 20, 2012
Rumor is now that he will be traded.
manofnothi - February 21, 2012
I'm just amazed...
How quickly we all went from KEEP CARR to SIGN BOWE TRADE CARR.
Wizeguy - February 20, 2012
Adequate (or even better) option at CB became available. With the holes on this team, I’d gladly take an extra 2nd round pick without creating a new hole on the roster.
JComp11 - February 20, 2012
yea can't even lie
that was a shock to me
Njohnson816 - February 20, 2012
things changed once we pulled the trigger on routt
Shanghai_Chiefs - February 20, 2012
Agreed....
But when it was Bowe vs Carr, people stood behind Carr with an almost emotional attachment. And then that attachment was destroyed in 2 seconds. Just surprising. I was expecting some sad posts, not as many posts of how to take advantage of the situation.
Wizeguy - February 20, 2012
Do you have Ups blocked somehow?
Tarkus - February 20, 2012
Hahaha
Wizeguy - February 20, 2012
give it some time
i think we all loved having Carr and there are no guarantees he’s gone (but very likely)
armchair GM is a luxury we have as fans.
EDIT: Also Tark has a point
Shanghai_Chiefs - February 20, 2012
Yeah, I like Carr just as much as before.
But I’m a fan of the team first, and this could make the team better going forward. Not necessarily player for player, but big picture.
Tarkus - February 20, 2012
there you go making sense again
Shanghai_Chiefs - February 20, 2012
It does.................
and I’m tired
LadyChief - February 20, 2012
Hooray for good sense!
I like the Penny club myself
shotty - February 20, 2012
I hate to see him go
but running a team is not the same as being a sports fan. It’s more like betting on sports. You root for a team with your heart. You bet with your mind—cold and calculated.
Making personnel decisions for sentimental reasons is a straight ticket to mediocrity.
joplin chiefs fan - February 20, 2012
Honestly, I think the money they signed Routt for makes it more likely that Carr is asking for too much.
Just seems to me that if they’re willing to sign Routt for 7 million per year they’d have no problem signing Carr at 9-10 per year, which he probably turned down.
Player turning down respectable money to go elsewhere = people become less attached to that player.
I will admit this is all speculation, but the Routt signing significantly increases the likelihood of this being the actual scenario.
sea_people - February 21, 2012
#26
If Battle leaves….now that Rout is in he gets to keep his #26
jrock684 - February 20, 2012
I think Battle really thinks he can be a #1 back.... Bwhahahahaha
Wizeguy - February 20, 2012
Is this where we are.....
We get lucky with a mid level pick, and he turns into a solid starter, who we could keep for years as we try to build……and we let him go? Oh wait, he was Herm and Carl’s guy?
This is pathetic. If we are building our Super Bowl bound juggernaut (dear God, at least once more in my lifetime) we are going to let our young talent get away? Bad plan.
Starters like Carr need to stay. Fill-ins like Battle can be replaced.
HowSweetItIs - February 20, 2012
Yeah, it was because he was Herm and Carl's guy.
Signed,
Charles, Flowers, DJ and Hali
Tarkus - February 20, 2012
Routt is on the same level as Carr.
Will be cheaper than Carr for the next three seasons. I don’t see the problem.
BeauJackson - February 20, 2012
= but older
All things being equal give me youth.
Currently Carr is better at certain things and Routt is better at others. But, Carr is younger and I don’t think he has hit his peak yet.
tevans96 - February 20, 2012
All thing$ aren't equal.
Tarkus - February 20, 2012
we don't know that yet
tevans96 - February 20, 2012
Realistically we do.
No way Carr signs for close to 3/$19.6M.
Tarkus - February 20, 2012
I've been wondering about that though
It’s still close to $7 mill a year. It could come down to length of contract or guaranteed money. Realistically, Brandon shouldn’t be hoping for more than $8 million a year. I do realize it’s all about demand.
Chief Willie Wildcat - February 20, 2012
I was all for keeping Carr
But the money this option frees up makes it a wash for me.
BeauJackson - February 20, 2012
Rather have the younger corner
If they are even a couple million a year close I would rather Carr 5 – 6 years than Routt for three years.
tevans96 - February 20, 2012
Not even close to the same level
but a manageable drop off in talent when you factor in Flowers and Urc Burry
HIV 2 Elway - February 20, 2012
Assuming they can stay healthy...
Scott B. - February 20, 2012
Or we do the Patriot way
Turn mid to late round draft picks into starters and trade them for high round picks. Buy low, sell high. Don’t rule out tagging and trading Carr for a second round pick or maybe even a first
trentchiefsfan - February 21, 2012
It is going to be an interesting off season..............
LadyChief - February 20, 2012
THIS
and to think we’re just coming off 2-a-days (as in 2 posts per day)
Shanghai_Chiefs - February 20, 2012
Ha!
Tarkus - February 20, 2012
I wonder if Ups has recovered from the gnus................
LadyChief - February 20, 2012
I'm sure he's still fighting the "good" fight in some other thread
RememberDelaney37 - February 20, 2012 via mobile
I saw.............
I had to go to work when the news broke
LadyChief - February 20, 2012
God help us if DeCastro falls past the Chiefs in the draft.
Tarkus - February 20, 2012
Sherrod
LadyChief - February 20, 2012
I hope he falls past us...
because we traded up to #2.
Wizeguy - February 20, 2012
Preach
Ill let the entire draft fall past us to get up to #2 and that QB
RememberDelaney37 - February 20, 2012 via mobile
AP will explode
actually there are quite a few scenarios where AP might explode. hope VOX has the servers ready to go.
Shanghai_Chiefs - February 20, 2012
or a melt down
LadyChief - February 20, 2012
Arm-aggedon
Get it?
RememberDelaney37 - February 20, 2012 via mobile
lol
LadyChief - February 20, 2012
probably more technically correct
but way less dramatic.
Shanghai_Chiefs - February 20, 2012
TAG
SIGN BOWE TAG CARR TRADE CARR PICK UP SOME PICKS BETTER DRAFT
schlamark - February 20, 2012
I think...
The only way it happens that way is if Pioli puts a contract in front of Bowe that offers more guarenteed money than the tag offers, and says that the offer only lasts until the day before free agency.
Wizeguy - February 20, 2012
If Brees gets his deal before FA like he is saying and the tag Nicks
any scenario where we trade Carr +/- for Nicks +/- ??
Shanghai_Chiefs - February 20, 2012
The Nicks issue will be one of cap room.... so not sure the Brees deal matters...
Wizeguy - February 20, 2012
probably more to it than that, but yeah this is most likely the case.
there will be more releases and deals restructured but yeah you’re probably right
Shanghai_Chiefs - February 20, 2012
I'm more into Ben Grubbs than I am Carl Nicks...
mostly because I think NOLA might pony up the dough to keep him, believe it or not. Also, Grubbs is more affordable.
(not like I’d be pissed at either addition)
go_saleaumua - February 21, 2012
Good move
the way NFL rules favor Wide receivers I think its a waste of cap space to have nearly 18 or 19 million dollars a year wrapped up in corners. which would happen if Carr is resigned
while Routt is a downgrade from Carr, if the chiefs can invest that money in quality free agents at positions of need (OL,TE,DT) then I think it is a good move.
Royals2012 - February 20, 2012
I would argue the ways the rules favor WRs make it more important to have very good CBs.
WURoyal - February 20, 2012 via mobile
Im going to hold off on any negative judgement .....
I am not sure if this means the absolute end for Carr, it appears so though, but I’m hoping not. Many people are saying it is a good deal because all of the money that we are “saving”. My biggest question is what are we going to do with this money we are “saving”.
While it appears that we are singing Routt for less money than we would sign Carr for, it is only good if you put that saved money to use. Now if we go out and lock up Bowe, sign a solid NT, and get some o-line depth/ starters, then I think this would be a good move. However, if this was just a move to save money and be cheap, then it is a horrible move. IMO Carr is a better CB although I do have much faith in Rout as well.
Here’s to hoping there is much more to this off-season :-)
O.C.ChiefsFan - February 20, 2012
trade value of Carr is where it's at
Cap space is nice, but the draft pick(s) we could get for Carr are what excites me. It opens up so many opportunities, and it’ll help keep the trade up for RG3 pipe dreams alive!
I would hate to see Carr go though. IF he goes, we better take advantage of the situation it creates.
Xander Crews - February 20, 2012
That's assuming that we put the franchise tag on Carr
From my understanding the only way that we can trade Carr is if we put the tag on him. He is not under contract and is set to hit FA. We would have to sign Bowe before we put the tag on Carr. It would be unwise to use the franchise tag on Carr if we do not have Bowe signed.
That was my original thought this morning when I first found out about the Routt signing. I thought that Pioli believed he could sign Bowe long term and then tag Carr and trade him away for pick. Only time will tell what the Chiefs’ upper brass has in mind. Hopefully they have a plan that will help us get a playoff win this year and more.
O.C.ChiefsFan - February 20, 2012
I, for one, am happy a move was made to give us an out with Carr
If Carr wants big money, and/or wants to try his hands as a #1 CB, now the team won’t have to use the dreaded franchise tag on him. For complaints about how the team “shows no loyalty to the players”, putting a contingency affect into place for Carr should be good news to those complainers. The team can now allow him to go seek his riches and playing title under a long term, lucrative deal.
This now also puts us in a better position to keep Bowe, who is arguably the more important individual player on the team. I don’t want to see the franchise tag used on Bowe, but hopefully the fear (for lack of a better word) of it gives him the motivation to sign long term.
RememberDelaney37 - February 20, 2012 via mobile
I'm gonna miss Carr.
He just seemed like a good dude. These are the guys I wish we could keep. Oh well….
Brady_Rendzia - February 20, 2012 via mobile
Is Routt a bad dude?
Outside of him being a Raider, I’m not sure I’ve heard bad stories of the guy. (I’m sure there are some, I just haven’t heard them)
Wizeguy - February 20, 2012
Yeah
Outside of attracting penalties like flies to shit I haven’t heard anything bad about him either. I would have liked to keep our own rather than getting someone elses. Hope he stays anyway.
His Royal Greatness - February 20, 2012 via mobile
I like to think
That Routt got a lot of penalties because others didn’t do their jobs. Like if a safety is supposed to be over the top, and he looks and they are not there, so he grabs the receiver to save a TD.
Wizeguy - February 20, 2012
Stupid penalties are part of their culture over there.
Tarkus - February 20, 2012
its contageous
We picked up some stupid penalites too but only when we played them
His Royal Greatness - February 20, 2012 via mobile
I hope so
But it would be freaking awesome to have 3 corners that can shut it down.
His Royal Greatness - February 20, 2012 via mobile
Ya,but 17!!!??
saints_chiefsfan1979 - February 20, 2012
Bad shit happens in bunches when you're head is out of the game...see "Monday Night Meltdown," circa 1998.
This whole year was wack for the AFC West….Oakland is a roller-coaster, SD’s offense breaks, DEN Tebows their way into relevance, and we’re bipolar and schizophrenic.
Routt’s shitty year could have been a part of that—COULD. I’m not willing to make that definite.
Maybe our staff can brush up his technique? He will be asked to do some different things as a corner, now that he’s not just in Al Davis’ defense. All they ever did till Al passed away was man-to-man…every down.
go_saleaumua - February 21, 2012
Yeah, it sucks...
Still sinking in, for me.
I think some of us are just pissed that we’re likely going to see a good player go somewhere else.
Routt may be just fine. I hope so, anyway.
But at the same time…you kinda’ get attached to some of these guys. We drafted Carr. And have seen him grow into a good player. Probably beyond what most of us expected. Now, he’s probably going to move on to another team…and I fully expect him to do well.
Yes…it’s life in the NFL. Doesn’t mean it doesn’t suck it sometimes.
Scott B. - February 20, 2012
Exactly
Brady_Rendzia - February 20, 2012 via mobile
That's where I'm at.
But I’m focusing on the potential at hand rather than the potential that’s set to walk away…mostly because it IS frustrating to see young talent up and leave.
go_saleaumua - February 21, 2012
I bet we tag Carr, and sign Bowe.
Crennels defense would be championship caliber with 3 man corners that good.
liquorstoreclerk - February 20, 2012 via mobile
Routt had issues being the #1 CB in Oakland.
If we can find a way to keep Carr and Routt becomes our #3 CB…this D is going to be really, REALLY good. (Can you say coverage sacks).
DivineGrace - February 20, 2012
I refuse to consider it, only so I don't get my hopes up.
That would be STUPID good, just a stupid good secondary.
go_saleaumua - February 21, 2012
I don't know about anybody else
but I’d rather be reading about pros and cons of Carr vs Routt than pros and cons of Carr vs no Carr.
I also like that we have money to pick up good players instead of losing them due to cap.
fongKC - February 20, 2012
Tag Carr
And either use him in a blockbuster trade to move up to number 2 in the draft. Or trade him New Orleans they need massive CB help.
Forever58 - February 20, 2012 via mobile
Trade Carr for Sproles, maybe? I could handle that.
Scott B. - February 20, 2012
Or Brees!
Or Brees and a Unicorn!
Wizeguy - February 20, 2012
YES! Let's make this ^ happen!
shotty - February 20, 2012
Silly, Brees don't exist.
Tarkus - February 20, 2012
Brees's?
Breeses?
Breesi?
for some reason I want a peanut butter cup…
Shanghai_Chiefs - February 20, 2012
Great
next you’re going to tell meTucan Sam isn’t real either. And I was having a good day….
shotty - February 20, 2012
Funny, we need massive QB help
sounds so simliar and yet they’re so far apart….
shotty - February 20, 2012
I think this move is brilliant
1. Before this move, We know Bowe and Carr have absolutely no incentive to sign a contract before Chiefs are forced to choose one of them to apply franchise tag.
2. Now, Bowe knows that if he wants the security of longer term contract and guaranteed money he will want to negotiate before chiefs apply franchise tag. Chiefs on the other hand can let him know that once they are forced to apply tag negotiations are over for the year.
3. If we can get Bowe to sign contract early now we can apply franchise tag to Carr and negotiate to trade either Carr or Routt.
4. I know how some people have mentioned that Carr wants to stay in KC and that we could have signed him for 7 or 8 million a year, If that were really true he would have already been under contract. He knows the best way to get a big payday is to say all the right things but negotiate hard….it’s a business.
I am confident that Drew Brees loves playing in New Orleans and would be happy to play for them IF they show him the money, but guess what, he still is not signed, why because teams have to find a way to pay 50 quality football players with a cap limit. If New Orleans did not tag Brees and some other team offered him 20 Million more over a 4 year contract you can be pretty sure Brees would like his new city just as much as he liked New Orleans
BigRedCadillac - February 20, 2012
I don't know about that Brees stuff.
You got to think Brees can negotiate just about whatever he wants and get it from New Orleans. And you also got to think that he knows how much NO can pay and is just waiting for them to give it to him.
Totally agree on the franchise tag points. It definitely seems like Bowe and Carr are waiting to see what they do with it and noone wants to make the first move and this is Pioli’s way of making someone flinch.
Lucasjr5 - February 21, 2012
Fake Future Gnus-paper Headlines
“Tuesday, March 13th:
Kansas City Chiefs announce signing of FA CB’s Webb, Finnegan, Rogers and Grimes, apply Franchise Tag to Carr. Pioli states this should shore up the CB spot, but does not rule out possiblity of drafting several more CB’s this April.”
We will soon own a monopoly on CB’s. A Monopioli, if you will.
ExRoyalsFan - February 20, 2012
Hey...why not?
Win all our games 3-0 on a Succop Field Goal.
Scott B. - February 20, 2012
or get ties when the field goals get blocked.
Lucasjr5 - February 21, 2012
Can any of those guys play NT, RT, or QB?
I hear we need to shore up those positions too
RememberDelaney37 - February 20, 2012 via mobile
Yep, all of them!
and each one can play RB, FB, ILB, C, and water boy too. Although that last one I feel like we could draft in the later rounds and still manage to get by.

Bowe Show
Is anyone else scared of signing Bowe to a big contract without Haley there keeping him in check?
Bearcatbaron - February 21, 2012 via mobile
Little Haley (Sirianni) got promoted to recievers coach. That'll help some.
go_saleaumua - February 21, 2012
Chiefs are not serious about a championship
Once again, they pick a decent free agent over a very good guy who knows the system, has friends on the team and in the city, who has had several years of development invested in him. Instead we get a guy who is decent but has no roots and no investment in the team. All to save a few bucks. The Chiefs remain the Chiefs and will never, repeat NEVER win a championship with this mentality. Next they will franchise Bowe and have him for one year instead of long term, and then he will leave in 2013. A really good organization would not operate this way. They would hold on at all costs to the guys they develop into stars. I’m disgusted and am beginning to lose my interest in this team after all these decades. This is just more of the same.
Bilyous - February 21, 2012
Once again???
Please show examples of this happening prior to this (and also remember Carr hasn’t gone anywhere yet)
RememberDelaney37 - February 21, 2012 via mobile
Because we don't have a top-shelf running back, outside linebacker, cornerback or inside linebacker locked up.
All of whom were "very good guy(s) who (know) the system, ha(ve) friends on the team and in the city, who ha(ve) had several years of development invested (in them).
Carr isn’t gone yet, either.
I guess I need some evidence here Bilyous…something to make this statement believable.
go_saleaumua - February 21, 2012
I'd really like to know
why they view carr as expendable. he’s started every game and improved each year. plus, he knows the defense and is part of the chemistry. not that routt is not a good sign, but curious. what is it about carr that pioli and co. feel we can do without him…?
be cee - February 21, 2012
Maybe its a larger then Flowers contract demand
Maybe we want to sign him as well, maybe I don’t know anything at all and I’m just trying to rationalize this move.
Who knows. I guess we’ll see how it plays out in the offseason.
ChiefWarPaint - February 21, 2012
It's not a "Routt so sexy, we can do without Carr, he smells and sux" thing. My guess is Carr wants a contract that's higher than Flowers' contract...and that ain't gonna happen here.
As much as I would have loved to have kept Carr in KC, we have to pay a lot of players long-term (Albert, Bowe for example) and we have holes that can be filled in free agency this year also. I just don’t see that Carr qualifies for a better deal than Flowers.
Now, I don’t KNOW that this is the case, but Carr’s behavior (making money signs throughout the season) and this signing, and the size of most cornerback contracts in the NFL these days, indicate that this is what’s happening…it isn’t a “Oh, this cat’s expendable, psssssh” thing but a “This guy wants more than we can handle considering everything else we have to do” thing.
go_saleaumua - February 21, 2012
carr was always healthy, reliable...he improved as time went on....i will miss him. really liked his size/speed combo
it is what it is, i guess flowers, hali, dj, and berry are the ones in for the long haul. ok. i understand not paying carr 8-10 mil. pioli and co dealt hobbs for a 5th after an identical season to carr’s numbers wise in pd’s, carr had one more int, about the same tackles. so i think getting a 3rd is a big deal for pioli.
SDChief - February 21, 2012
Routt is the better CB at coverage, it sounds like
but can’t jam receivers at the line. If I remember correctly that’s the only reason we beat GB. This could be a problem. Still, good signing and this must mean Pioli knows Carr doesn’t want to be in KC.
