Shortly after hearing the news that the Kansas City Chiefs had signed CB Stanford Routt, the reaction by many fans was that this means the end of the Brandon Carr era in Kansas City.
That's not necessarily the case, Chiefs GM Scott Pioli told Steven St. John and Nate Bukaty on 810 WHB this morning.

"I'll say this," Pioli said, "the signing of Stanford Routt does not impact where we're at with Brandon Carr. As a matter of fact, Romeo [Crennel] and I both reached out to Brandon yesterday as this was unfolding and talked to him. I spoke personally with Brandon, and without getting into the details of that conversation, but he knows, and he's known before, he's someone we want to keep here, and he's still someone we want to keep a Chief.
"This signing doesn't eliminate the feelings that we have for Brandon and how we want to have him here. He knows that. He wants to be here. We want him here. If both sides find a deal that makes sense for one another, we'd love to have Brandon back."
"This happens every year," Pioli said, "there's a couple players, or a player or two, that are good, quality players that end up on the street and they're available prior to free agency and you have an opportunity to make a decision or not.
"Knowing where we're at with the cap situation and knowing some of the plans and things that might happen with our roster...we want to try and keep Brandon here. Nothing was done yet so we saw an opportunity with a player on a very fair contract who really wanted to be a Chief. And we thought it would be a good marriage."
Pioli and Carr's camp will continue talking in the hopes of getting something done. I doubt something does happen, but they won't cut off communications.
Pioli also recognized that the Chiefs are playing with fire by signing Routt, who is a former Raider.
"Him being a former Raider," Pioli said of Routt, "we're trying to clean up his life a little bit and get him out here as a Kansas City Chief. We're trying to make an honest man out of him!" (Yes, of course he was kidding.)

Brandon Carr has been replaced in our starting lineup
Brandon’s a great kid and we wish him luck wherever he goes, and he’s welcome to stay here as long as he doesn’t care about actually getting paid
and Brandon Carr is going to be one of those players
but it’s not going to happen so prepare to be disappointed

upatmn – I disagree with the Chiefs signing Routt and not paying Carr whatever he was asking.

i have a strong, purely emotional, attachment to brandon carr and nothing short of signing him to a 50 year 9,000,000,000 dollar deal will be okay with me. If we go one dollar under 9 billion then he will have given us a home team discount, and we should be eternally thankful for what he has done. carr is clearly the best cornerback to ever play the game of football and letting him go is clearly the worst thing of all time.
swimcris - February 21, 2012
last year Pioli was excoriated on here
because he didn’t foresee Berry being injured all year and not having sufficient depth to cover for it.
Now he’s being excoriated again, for having too much depth.
kabrink - February 21, 2012
There is nothing Pioli can do
short of signing Tom Brady with Aaron Rodgers as #2 and Peyton Manning as #3 QB that will satisfy the pitchfork and torch crowd.
neiowakcfan - February 21, 2012
So what...Pioli signs Brady, Rodger, and Manning....but he didn't / hasn't signed a NT. Pioli sucks.

Good point.

I've always thought Carr would be a fantastic safety
MNchiefsfan - February 21, 2012
Um, if Carr could be then why not Routt?
Routt is bigger and faster than Carr, so how is this one and not the other?
The point is, they are both CBs. Could they play some safety? Yeah, they each have the size to do that if there was a need for them to.
But just because you put Carr at safety on Madden doesn’t mean it would work that way in real life.

CapnCribbs - February 21, 2012

KaloPhoenix - February 21, 2012
Yeah
He DOES seem genuinely interested. The fact that he called him after signing Routt says a lot about how highly he thinks of him.
MNchiefsfan - February 21, 2012
Yes. And it wasn't a stick-it-to-Carr call. It was a "Nothing's changed between us" call.
The last pronouncement on Carr that I recall was that re-signing Bowe and Carr was Pioli’s highest priority. Pioli might not let a whole lot get out in the public domain, but I don’t think he wants to be known as a bullshitter on the utterances he does make.
Personally, I like the move, with or without future trades in the offing. Nice to have additional player-for-picks scenarios in place, for the week before the trade deadline, next season. But just as a football matter, there are still a few developments I’d like to see take place in the secondary, and Routt takes ‘em in that direction, even if it’s Flowers who ends up bein’ traded.

Falcon58 - February 21, 2012
Uh Bullshit,
let’s remember that this is a throwing league & the 5th D-back is extremely important.IMHO if we sign Carr this will be a tough team to throw against.
chiefs63 - February 21, 2012
That's my hope
It may tie up more cap space in one position than other teams may like, but considering this pass happy league, with rookie QB’s even throwing for 400+ yrds in games, having 3 physical CB’s capable of shutting the field down seems ideal.
shotty - February 21, 2012
Yes. And you can ALWAYS trade away a guy, if one of your younger guys steps up.
If you can do with 3 guys what everybody else needs 4 or 5 guys, including above-and-beyond-the-call-of-duty play from a durn LB, to do, you can play it a lot differently than everybody else. Then, maybe your NT becomes expendable, because you can just throw 5 at the line of scrimmage on every down, so those ‘tweeners you’ve been stockpiling are seeing lots of action, in twos, threes and fours.
hmills110 - February 21, 2012
I'm hoping and praying
but I still think it’s going to take $8 million a year or better. No idea if they’re willing to spend it, but maybe they’ll be betting on the cap increases that’ll be taking place over the next few years.
Chief Willie Wildcat - February 21, 2012
$8 million really wouldn't be too bad
I fear he’ll want around $10 mill or more. I think if it’s near $8 mill we’ll go ahead and pay him.
CapnCribbs - February 21, 2012
If he hits the market
I think he’ll get $9-10 million, but if he’ll take $8 mill to stay here… shrug
Chief Willie Wildcat - February 21, 2012
They can afford it, now, and nothing's set in stone for the longer term.
They can re-sign Carr and Bowe and still be major players for any guy they choose to target.
hmills110 - February 21, 2012
If Carr is brought back it will speak volumes about the priorities of this team
Possibilities could be moving Jalil Brown or Javier Arenas to more of a safety role.
Could also mean we expect to see a TON of Dime defense and 3rd corner may be a higher priority financially than say, inside linebacker or even nose tackle. If a 2 down plugger is all they are looking for from the NT position, why spend a lot of money when you need a 3rd corner on all 3 downs?
I still don’t think they’ll get Carr back, but I really don’t know. Just don’t rule out a philosophical shift in how the corner position is valued.
RedNose - February 21, 2012
I honestly wish they'd try Arenas out at RB
he’s not a terrible Nickleback, but he’s so compact and explosive running the ball, love to see them try it out. Evedn if it was just in training camp.
shotty - February 21, 2012
Heh. That's MY idea, dammit!
And how cool would it be to have Javy there on the RB depth chart, able to switch sides and do a serviceable job at corner, if disaster struck the secondary?
Javy or Brown, either one, might be good at S. So might Routt. I think they’d like to blur the lines between corner and safety. It’d make them a lot tougher to scheme against, if they could get McGraw and Piscitelli off the field. All due respect to McGraw, his lack of speed betrays a lot to the QB pre-snap.

It tells us that Carr told Steve Breaston he wanted to stay a Chief at the last home game
“We” being NFL players I assume, know how this process works in terms of the business side of football, and dealing with fans.
Mostly, this just shows how cool of a dude Breaston is. Glad he’s a Chief. Hope we can figure something out with Carr too, but we’ll see.

This is your best comment ever.
Living in these parts (and yes I am a Yankee fan since birth), the Boston fans are ridiculous. With the Sox, they bitched and moaned for years because of a bullcrap curse, then they won and everyone was suddenly a know-it-all lifetime Sox fan.
The Bruins? There are some hardcore hockey fans here. And then there were the thousands who suddenly became one after the Cup win last year.
The worst is definitely the Pats. I used to go to games with my father in the late 80’s and early 90’s. I kid you not, you could hear people on the other side of the stadium cheering and you could hear every player yelling on the field. Not one kid in my high school even had a Pats jersey or hat or anything. Fast forward and they act like they invented football.
Boston fans are THE WORST EVER.
Steve_in_RI - February 21, 2012
Pretty hardcore about the Celtics, though, aren't they?
MNchiefsfan - February 21, 2012
They were hardcore when I was young
with Bird, McHale, DJ and the Chief. But in the 90’s tickets could be had by anyone. Besides the few Reggie Lewis years (gone way too soon), the period up until the arrival of The Big 3 was very quiet. Then they won the title and it was Celtics-town again. I guess it would be like that in a lot of cities, but being so close it’s maddening.

Especially when a city is supposed to be "the best" when it comes to fans

I can see Routt taking over McGraw’s role as the guy who would cover the TE and also be the nickel corner and maybe even backup safety if Lewis or Berry went down
KingChief - February 21, 2012
Gives them lots of flexibility.
And they could use Carr and Flowers both in different ways, as well.
hmills110 - February 21, 2012
Maybe, Just Maybe
We plan to keep Carr also. When I look at the depth chart… we don’t have any depth at corner. With the league moving more and more to pass first and often offenses, this may be what we are trying to accomplish.
Last year, not having depth in the secondary really hurt us. Every time we rotated a defensive back we got beat horribly. Tebow threw a 60 yard pass on us when we had a few of our backups in. Just my optimistic opinion anyway.
chiefs_kc_fan - February 21, 2012
I really think your right and very good protection against an injury. To have Flowers, Carr,
Routt, Berry, Lewis, Arenas, Brown and McGraw would give the Chief’s the best and deepest defensive backfield in the NFL.

Look, yes it is putting a lot of money in the secondary, but it would also (if Carr re-signs) give us the best secondary in the NFL. How many teams would have a 3-deep CB list KC? And as many 3+ WR sets the defense sees, the more this is an asset.

Why the Chiefs dont franchise tag Carr.. sit him down and ask him what he wants to do (stay or leave KC) and then either settle on a contract agreement over the course of next year, or trade the man (hopefully to one of Carrs top choices). I think its a complete failure for this team to lose out completely in the brandon carr sweepstakes. I think a deal can be done where both sides are happy. To let him just walk away to the highest bidder when he is the best CB on the market by far is probably the dumbest thing ive ever heard.
I dont know if this is possible as there are many legalities that the commons fan doesnt know of.. but can anyone tell me if tagging carr and trading him is an option? Why or why not?
Matt in KC - February 21, 2012
It’s completely an option and, in my opinion, the most likely to happen. The key will be getting Bowe to sign before FA begins.
JComp11 - February 21, 2012
I have no doubt in mind that bowe will sign..
He likes it here.. he has a lot of good friends on this team.. he loves RAC.. I dont see why Bowe or Carr for that matter would want to leave. Dont get me wrong.. a team like the Raiders could throw $100 million at his feet for a couple of years (lets be honest- they are the dumbest team in the league. its possible) and he would gladly go- who wouldnt. But hes not Randy Moss or TO (in their prime).. And Bowe might be one of the most underrated recievers in the league as far as what he has accomplished.
Matt in KC - February 21, 2012
I'd like to think that Bowe's first choice is KC
But what about a team like TB? The weather’s nicer, they have tons of cap room and a better QB, and there’s no question they’d like to have him. The only thing hindering that is the cheapness of the Bucs.
Chief TigerGator - February 21, 2012
Yeah
Tampa, Miami, San Diego.. Bowe could litterally go anywhere he wants.. but I look at it as if I were in his shoes.. I would take less money to stay with the guys I know and respect before I would leave. And it cant just be me.. I look at the Royals and Hosmer, Mous, and the guys that have all played together in the minors, hell even some of the guys who have been there the last couple of years.. they want to stay together.
Matt in KC - February 21, 2012
Especially after they got rid of the guy who picked on him.
hmills110 - February 21, 2012
Because if they haven't signed Bowe first, they are leaving themselves open to losing him.
polodude017 - February 21, 2012
Who would you rather lose?
Carr or Bowe.. I would rather lose Bowe than Carr.. IMO
Matt in KC - February 21, 2012
Now?
It’s not even close. Bowe is way more important. Before Routt signed, I would have agreed with you, but not now.
Tarkus - February 21, 2012
I'll say this
I think Pioli/Hunt know that the fans would like to see Carr remain a Chief. Business wise, I think it makes sense to Tag/Trade him. If we do resign Carr, I think this will be a move to please the fans….which would be nice for a change. (and obviously still good for the team as well)
Brad-KC - February 21, 2012
I'd be upset
if the Chiefs made football moves to please fans other than to win championships.
If the Chiefs want to please us, lower the ticket prices ;)
fongKC - February 21, 2012
or just get to the SB
TheScreenName - February 21, 2012
Thank you.
Fans get pleased by winning. All that emotional crap doesn’t mean much when it comes down to wins and losses, which is ultimately what matters.
Tarkus - February 21, 2012
Hypothetical situation: Lets say we HAVE to lose one of them
1. Which one can we less afford to lose?
2. Which one would you personally rather keep?
Chief TigerGator - February 21, 2012
I assume you are talking about Bowe and Carr.
Before signing Routt, I would have said I would rather keep Carr and lose Bowe. But now, I would flip that.
polodude017 - February 21, 2012
Yeah, I should have been more clear. Bowe and Carr
I think we can less afford to lose Bowe, but I personally like Carr better. My guess is most fans feel the same.
Chief TigerGator - February 21, 2012
Even before we signed Routt, we can afford to lose Bowe less.
A receiver of Bowes ability and production is WAYYY harder to replace than a cornerback of Brandon Carr’s ability and production.
RedNose - February 21, 2012
Not this year it isn't
If you’re going to replace Bowe, this is the year to do it.
GenericBrand - February 21, 2012
Referring to the WRs available in Free Agency?
I think Mike Wallace is the only guy I’d (maybe) consider as an upgrade over Bowe. Vincent Jackson can’t stay on the field, Stevie Johnson is good but relatively ordinary athlete. Who else is out there that you’d rather?
RedNose - February 21, 2012
Absolutely!!
Tag and trade Bowe to St. Louis, along with Glen Dorsey and our #1 pick and get RG3. Make it so! I have seen Blackmon mocked to St. Louis. If we give them Bowe, we give them what they need, and we get what we need, our QBOTF. Bowe is a good receiver, but there are a LOT of good receivers to be had in FA, like Colston, Meachem, Stevie Johnson, or my favorite, Vincent Jackson (take our main rival’s best receiver). Lots more here:
http://www.footballsfuture.com/2012/fa/wr.html
We could also take a flier on someone who will work somewhat cheaply, like Moss, Owens, or Wayne, guys who are at the end of their careers, but could still provide production for us. I love Bowe, but if we can get RG3, we should make that deal.
AnkenyChiefsFan - February 21, 2012
Actually
I wouldn’t mind having DeSean Jackson as a Chief even with the stupid head games he plays. Imagine him back returning punts…Dante Hall 2.0.
AnkenyChiefsFan - February 21, 2012
I was with you until DeSean.
Like they were saying today, on NFLN. He’ll make a game-changing impact on a handful of games, but be nothing special for 10 games or so.
hmills110 - February 21, 2012
Without reading any of the comments on here...
Pioli pretty much has to say that in order to keep any trade value for Carr in the event we end up franchising him. Unless Carr wants to come back for a similar contract that Routt just signed I doubt he’s in a Chiefs uni next year.
Chiefs08Matt - February 21, 2012 via mobile
This has me curious
Makes me think that someone is changing positions. Carr to safety or Arenas more of a safety/cb hybrid player maybe.
GenericBrand - February 21, 2012
Jalil Brown
Donald Washington 2.0
KansasCityShuffle - February 21, 2012
It has to be someone with a bigger role or why bring in Routt and suggest you want all three CBs?
GenericBrand - February 21, 2012
Nickel & Diming?
It’s a pass happy league. That’s no secret. I’m missing something..
KansasCityShuffle - February 21, 2012
Yeah, and I'm a chinese jet pilot
Thanks for feeding us BS, Scott.
Clay Wendler - February 21, 2012
Ash, is that you?
TRSChief - February 21, 2012
Optomistic view! Excuse me if this has been covered.
Anyone else notice that Routt’s deal is very front loaded as in it appears that we will pay him half his contract in the first year. If this is the case and the chiefs exercised the extra cap clause(forgot the correct term) then this could signify that they are actually gonna load up for a run. If they actually get a deal done with Carr(praying) then i would really start to believe this is the case. As much as Romeo likes to use Berry in the box and 5 DB sets with the 5th typically being a safety couldn’t this really work with one of them(Carr\Routt) playing a CB\S hybrid type of position.
bamhvac - February 21, 2012
There it is says he gets $6.5 mil guaranteed and $11 total that would be over half of the $19.6 he reportedly singed for.

bamhvac - February 21, 2012
He reportedly singed for?
I hope he was better than William Hung….
;)
AnkenyChiefsFan - February 21, 2012
There's no question, that a 3-headed monster @ CB would give 'em lots more options, and make them a lot harder to read.
hmills110 - February 21, 2012
Considering he played for the Raiders
I am not at all surprised by the number of penalties. Now he will play for a team that has an awesome Defensive Coordinator, and one that doesn’t brag about having the most penalties in a season year after year!
radtech04 - February 21, 2012
exactlly
sloppy play can be corrected. Moss was shitty with the raiders and look what he did the next year in NE….Hard to judge a player while he is with the raiders. Gotta give him the benefit of the doubt
TheScreenName - February 21, 2012
One year now defines an entire 7 year career?
bamhvac - February 21, 2012
Maybe it's not the Corner who is crappy
Maybe he played crappy because he was unhappy that he played for a crappy franchise, kind of like Randy Moss.
radtech04 - February 21, 2012
This! HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!
GO CHIEFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
bamhvac - February 21, 2012
I will also point this out.
Corners are more prone to penalties and mistakes when they don’t trust their safeties and we have some pretty good safeties here!
bamhvac - February 21, 2012
But the Raiders have Huff
/sarcasm
PVChiefsfan - February 21, 2012
Hey Maybe Oakland can draft a Corner in the draft...
Oh wait a minute…Never mind…You don’t have any!! Bahahaha!
radtech04 - February 21, 2012
*Draft Picks
radtech04 - February 21, 2012
Cleveland is probably just about as Shitty
Of a franchise to play for as Oakland. Nobody wins there!
