Good morning! Today's Kansas City Chiefs news has more on Routt, Car, the salary cap, and where you can see Willie Lanier (if you live in Virginia). Enjoy.
It's unclear where negotiations stand between the Chiefs and Carr's representation since both parties have kept details close to the vest. If negotiations stall or end, the NFL has always had its methods for making that status public.
But if the Chiefs were able to retain Carr, it wouldn't just create competition at cornerback. It would give the Chiefs arguably the best cast of cornerbacks in the NFL.
Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel has implemented a heavy dose of nickel and dime personnel groupings over the past two seasons. Mixing three cover cornerbacks with
Eric Berry's ability to play inside the box and Javier Arenas' ability to blitz off the edge would open the door for a number of new personnel groupings. Chiefs Send Early Ripple Through Free Agency from The Mothership
So the Chiefs have been busy in the last few days trying to change public opinion about the team being cheap.
Over the weekend the Chiefs handed the Kansas City Star their complete list of salaries and salary cap numbers for the coming season. Normally, this type of information is guarded like nuclear launch codes, but when fighting to change perceptions - especially by the ticket buying public - out of the ordinary moves are often required.
Jumping Through The Cap... Wednesday Cup O'Chiefs from Bob Gretz

The bad bout Routt: He's sloppy; no corner had more than Routt's 28 penalties accepted in the last two years. He's a solid corner who could be very good with better coaching -- and he's coming to the right place. Emmitt Thomas, the secondary coach, was a Hall of Fame player and is a strong technique coach. His assistant, Otis Smith, was a marginal NFL player who had to do everything right to stay in the league -- and Carr and Flowers both benefited from his coaching. I think one of the big reasons Routt went to Kansas City is he's dying to be coached. And he'll be coached in Kansas City.

It is surely interesting to hear that the Chiefs haven't closed the door on bringing back Carr, but it would still be surprising to see that scenario play out.

Retain Carr
Sign Carr and make Routt the Safety.you never have enough weapons incase of a injury.
chiefsfool - February 22, 2012
Hell of a lot of money in the secondary
Berry… Flowers…Carr.. how much would that be, somewhere around 100+ million, then throw in Arenas, Lewis, anyone else they have.
Routt is not a saftey, he’s a cornerback. He’s best at man to man, not safety.
Zayla - February 22, 2012
Just like I said before
I think we sign carr long term!!
kcchiefsfan515 - February 22, 2012 via mobile
If he wouldn't sign before, why sign now?
I’m sure they’re not offering MORE money now. Chiefs are in a better position to bargain because now they don’t really care if he leaves.
Zayla - February 22, 2012
Okay
Sign and trade him then,, or give him the tender 1 and 3 maybe??
kcchiefsfan515 - February 22, 2012 via mobile

Can’t slap s tender on him.

Brendon - February 22, 2012 via mobile
Well
Thts why I said maybe I didnt know but, I do know u can sign and trade him tho!!
kcchiefsfan515 - February 22, 2012 via mobile
Can't sign someone who doesn't want to be signed
Be great to sign Bowe, who I think they have a good chance to sign now, then Tag Carr and either keep him, or trade him.
However, the only way to trade to Tag Carr is to either sign Bowe, or let him walk.
Bowe is now faced with: “I’ll try to test the FA market”, and now it’s “crap, I’m going to get tagged”. Big change for him… now he signs in my opinion.

Really
The stupid kicker wants in on the lawsuit!

I wonder
if the Chiefs are looking into Tolbert. I kind of like the idea of him sporting the Arrowhead. The dude is 250 plus pounds stuffed into 10 pound bucket. I like his hands and nose for the endzone. But the question is, Can he block!
kckeith58 - February 22, 2012 via mobile
you can say that again...
oh, wait…
SFLChief - February 22, 2012
haha
yeah. My bad on the same multi posts. Dont know what happened.
kckeith58 - February 22, 2012 via mobile
happens to me too...
SFLChief - February 22, 2012
He is a pretty good blocker
He was LT fullback before they drafted Matthews and when Mathews showed he couldn’t stay health and had fumblitis that’s when Nervous Norv started giving Tolbert the ball.
KingChief - February 22, 2012
I think we resign Carr
We have the cap room to do it and as of next year we have to be spending that money anyway don’t we?.
To me it seems like Pioli is sticking with Cassel so we won’t have a big contract for a QB to pay anytime soon. And unless I’m wrong, we won’t be paying out any huge contracts right away to rookies with the new CBA rules for rookies wages. And you know Pioli will build as much of this team as he can through the draft. The only other big expense is getting Bowe resigned and we will still have a big amount of cap room.
I imagine unless Carr gets terribly unreasonable we sign him. Does anyone know for sure what kind of contract he is seeking by chance?

If Carr re-signs
Routt could take McGraws place and cover the TE because he is bigger and faster.
KingChief - February 22, 2012
I would prefer Tolbert over Bush or the Law Firm.
Topchief1 - February 22, 2012
concussions and player injuries
Let me start by saying that i’m not just talking about concussions here…
I feel like we fail to point out when all these players are getting hurt during games or concussions…that a majority of them are not even wearing all the pads and protective equipment available to them. Half of these QBs are not wearing mouth pieces and the onese that do are so thin that they are not providing any protection. You never see tailbone pads or thigh pads on half the players. Again, when you do they are so thin that they are only in place to say that they are wearing them and not serving any protection.
Just seems to me like driving a car and disabling your airbag and taking off your seatbelt, then blaiming the department of transportation when you get hurt in an accident.

Good question
suprised no ones asked that.

IF they re-sign Carr
I’m betting they are looking to play better man coverage on TEs with 3 CBs, 2 of which are big and physical (keep Flowers on the WRs). This might be a prudent strategy in the AFC West. Having said that, it doesn’t make financial sense to sign Carr to anything more than $7-8 mil per year, and I’m betting he’ll get more than that as a FA. He’s gone, I’m afraid.
K_Karsten - February 22, 2012
If Carr really wants to play in Kansas City... for RAC... with Berry, Flowers, Lewis, and Routt he will sign for $8 Mil/year.
That secondary would be worth the price tag IMO….its not like we are jetting players to make cap room like some teams.
DivineGrace - February 22, 2012
I think Carr is going to get number 1 corner money
And I bert it will be more then Flowers contract. Which means for us to keep him we will have to pay him more than Flowers. I just don’t see that happening and I don’t see Flowers being OK with that.
vincent2668 - February 22, 2012 via mobile
Anyone notice the "Chiefs send early ripple through free agency" article is from the mothership (you know the website run by Pioli and his tight lipped crew.)
It states…
and…
and…
and lets not forget…
If that is as close to Pioli slobbin on a knob as any player will EVER get. I hope Carr appreciates just how much the fans, his teammates, and Pioli really want him back. I cross my fingers that he shows us love with signing a contract.
