So Who Is The Chiefs Defensive Coordinator?

Interesting tidbit from Stanford Routt's interview with Doug Farrar of Yahoo! Sports this week. The new Kansas City Chiefs cornerback was talking about meeting the KC coaching staff on his visit and said:
"When I went to Kansas City, I met everybody. I met Romeo, I met the GM, Scott Pioli, I met Otis Smith and Emmitt Thomas. I briefly met the defensive coordinator -- real quickly, because they were in meetings -- and from the moment I walked in there, they embraced me."
Hmm...he met Romeo Crennel and the defensive coordinator.

But...Romeo is the defensive coordinator.

I'd guess one of the Chiefs defensive assistant coaches has taken on more of a leadership role with Crennel having increased duties as the head guy. Maybe that assistant runs some of the day-to-day stuff while Crennel can tend to the offense, defense and special teams. You know how Crennel says there's a lot more you have to do as the head coach, like non-football stuff? I wouldn't be surprised if he has an assistant coach who is involved when he's doing head coach duties. I would also guess that assistant is Gary Gibbs, linebackers coach. He's a veteran coach and has been around for a while. He seems like a logical choice given the options.

It's either that or Routt just misspoke. I'm just guessing here.

I'd guess he just got ahead of himself

some things become routine and the Chiefs staff is a bit different from the norm.

I figure Gibbs is the acting DC
I assume there is a defensive scoach who will play a larger role and help out RAC with the duties of the D Coordinator.
Me too

I would guess this is probably Gibbs.

yep gary gibbs.
Sounds like a mispeak...

Or a verbal short-cut. Nobody says associate vice-president of sales and marketing, they say VP.

Well he didn't say he briefly met Romeo Crennel

Maybe he meant to say offensive… who knows? It could be Bill Cowher is the secret Defensive Coordinator!

This is a non story.

But, it is nice to see our new Chief making his rounds. Make yourself at home Stanford Routt.

It was great to see the Chiefs make an early impact, hopefully it is a sign of things to come.

STANZI?

He does run the scout O…

bet that scout offense dominates.
It's Palko.

He knows how to get the DB’s in Position, for the int’s.

the chief's new D coordinator is....

Well, you know how it is when you come into a new

place and they are introducing you around………………sometimes it is hard to remember exactly who is who and who is what. It is possible they introduced Routt to someone and said something about defense which he may have misconstrued as meaning the person he was meeting was the defensive coordinator. It happens. I am totally not worried about that.

I would guess Gibbs plays that role when Crennel can't be around

Gibbs was the first guy Crennel mentioned when talking about who helped him in the last three games, he’s been a DC before and is probably the best choice for the job anyway.

definitely. ive been on the "name gibbs DC and let romeo have the say" train for awhile

gibbs is well respected, has more experience than emmitt thomas coaching, and even was a Dc as you said.

definitely the right choice imo, i actually expected them to name him dc just to avoid the issues we had on the offensive side with no one named, then a guy with no experience calling plays named

Its like Belichick though

For alot of years there was no one listed as DC on their coaching staff.

OMG!

You didn’t just suggest that the HC should be able to override what a Coordinator calls did you???!!!

"they embraced me"

He certainly can’t be referring to the Chiefs at all! I mean, everyone knows what a toxic environment 1 Arrowhead Drive has become under Pioli! No way anyone can come away with a warm fuzzy with that petulant dictator at the helm!

Must have been confused.

Dose of reality

How some can be so blind to the words spoken by those in the heart of the matter makes me just a little bit crazy.
