The Kansas City Chiefs are going to be looking for competition for QB Matt Cassel this offseason. We don't know what kind of competition it'll be but it'll be competition.
So where will that competition come from and who will that player be?
One interesting possibility could be QB Jimmy Clausen. He's with the Carolina Panthers at the moment and the Charlotte Observer reported this week that he could be a salary cap casualty.
Clausen was once thought to be a first round pick -- remember when we thought KC would take him at the top of round two a couple years ago? -- but his NFL career has been less than stellar.
There's really not a whole to evaluate with Clausen -- he hasn't been very good in the NFL. But he's young enough to still hang in that cloud of "potential" so perhaps there's some promise. He played for Charlie Weis, who has connections back to KC.
Interesting name to keep an eye on. The question I would have is, if the Chiefs believed he could make it, why didn't they draft him two years ago? Maybe not the best option but possibly an option if he's released.

Meh
I’ll take Orton
chiefsman! - February 22, 2012 via mobile
This should have rivaled your Pryor story
BJ Kissel - February 22, 2012
Well
I’m assuming the QB competition won’t be real competition. So in that sense Clausen would make a little sense.
Joel Thorman - February 22, 2012
good point
BJ Kissel - February 22, 2012
Why are you assuming that?
Tarkus - February 22, 2012
because there have been indication that Cassel is the guy
Bigcherokeechief - February 22, 2012
By them saying they want to bring in competition
and they’d like to have Orton back? Those indicators?
Tarkus - February 22, 2012
"Coach Speak"
Half time, down by 27
Coach Speak: Hang in there guys, we still have a chance if we do x,y, and z.
Reality: We’re fucked.
Brad-KC - February 22, 2012
So IOW
your mind is already made up, and nothing they say can change it.
Tarkus - February 22, 2012
I just jumped into this convo
and gave a option as to why people don’t necessarily take their word as gospel. I could care less either way.
Brad-KC - February 22, 2012
My point is...
people keep saying that, but have nothing to back it up.
Tarkus - February 22, 2012
The fact that Pioli has
strut Matt Cassel on the field for 3 straight years is “reason” for speculation. Personally, Picking up Orton was a bold move… and think Pioli will do what’s in the best interest for the Chiefs, not himself.
Brad-KC - February 22, 2012
Let's see.
1st offseason: Rebuilding season and new contract
2nd offseason: Division title and Pro Bowl appearance
3rd offseason: Now.
So before now, when exactly did you expect Pioli to replace him?
Tarkus - February 22, 2012
Any of those seasons
If you can’t watch Matt Cassel play and realize he’s awful… I don’t really know what to say.
Brad-KC - February 22, 2012
He is awful
but the first season we traded for him (which was a good shot), he was average. Too early to just yank him after one average season. So second season, he does pretty damn good. Why would we just scrap him after a pretty damn good season here? So, third season, he shows that he isnt the guy. This would be the time to do it, anything else was just to early.
Hate to say it, but I agree with Tark here.
TheScreenName - February 22, 2012
But he wasn't awful in 2010...
bossmanham - February 22, 2012
Tarkus
remember at the beginning of last season , half of us on AP were hoping for a veteran backup in FA. we knew then he wasn’t going to be QOTF.
Hoochdawg - February 22, 2012
Orton was available at the time as well...
LHO - February 22, 2012
I don't think so
Miami was trying to get him and the donkeys wouldn’t let him go.
Zif - February 22, 2012
I hope you mean couldn't* care less.
manofnothi - February 22, 2012
also, what does IOW mean?
Brad-KC - February 22, 2012
In Other Words
MtHammer - February 22, 2012
a thank you
Brad-KC - February 22, 2012
Like to have competition, like to have Orton back
doesn’t mean either is going to happen. Or not legit competition.
Orton is going to get a legit shot to be a starter somewhere and it will be somewhere that is competition isn’t as invested as the Chiefs are in Cassel. I don’t necessarily mean invested as in $ but just in the team. If Orton, or any other potentially legitimate QB, comes here then they are going to be in the middle of a QB controversy the first bad game they have. Next you know we are starting Cassel a few games and the new QB a few games. It will be like RAC’s time in Cleveland where he couldn’t choose between Quinn or Anderson. If you have 2 qb’s you have no qb’s.
As for legit competition, I don’t see Orton coming back, I wish he would and I wish he became the starter but the chance of that is maybe 20%. I could see them bringing in Quinn because RAC is the one that drafted him. Henne is a possibility because of his ties to Daboll. Otherwise, not sure any legit starting QB would think of coming here as long as Cassel is here. Only difference would be Manning who would be the clear cut starter but other than him there is no other FA QB that would walk in and lock the job down with no controversy at all.
Fozzyboyd - February 22, 2012
That's speculation, though.
Not indication that Cassel is the guy.
Tarkus - February 22, 2012
90% of what is said in these threads is speculation
including the 90% number that I just said.
Fozzyboyd - February 22, 2012
Ha! True dat.
Just get tired of hearing how Pioli is married to Cassel.
Tarkus - February 22, 2012
There's reason for it...no one is claiming it as fact
Brad-KC - February 22, 2012
No there isn't, as I showed above.
If no effort is made to bring in true competition this year, that argument can be made. This is the first offseason where it was clear a change needs to be made. First offseason was a wash, and second offseason Cassel made the Pro Bowl and the Chiefs won the division.
Tarkus - February 22, 2012
Oh please
Cassel making the pro bowl was an injustice to players making the pro bowl.
Brad-KC - February 22, 2012
Whatever.
You hate him. I get it.
Tarkus - February 22, 2012
<3
Brad-KC - February 22, 2012
Cassel didn't "make" the Pro Bowl.
He was invited after a player that “made” the Pro Bowl declined to participate.
It’s not the same thing.
neiowakcfan - February 22, 2012
I don't know if them not bringing in a big name competition is argument that Pioli is married to Cassel
as much as it shows how little there is out there. When Campbell, Orton, Quinn, and Henne are the cream of the QB crop of free agents then that is pretty bad.
Yeah, there is Manning but that’s just a maybe and there is Brees but everyone knows he isn’t going anywhere.
Fozzyboyd - February 22, 2012
Matt Flynn would like a word with you.
And he’s not a viable option, either.
It’s time to anoint the Stanzi.
neiowakcfan - February 22, 2012
So you are a Cassel guy?
Mr.Pibbs - February 22, 2012
They can say what they want, if they wanted Orton back he be signed by now
Orton himself said he would not stay with the Chiefs if cassel was on the team. Or basically, he is not staying to compete against his friend.
And If I were Orton I would not either, he is going to be a starter someone with no real QB comptition, so why stay
Bigcherokeechief - February 22, 2012
So I guess they don't want
any of their other free agents either that they haven’t signed already. I mean if they wanted them back, they’d be signed by now. I’ll miss you, Dwayne Bowe!
Orton was being politically correct by calling it Cassel’s team. They only became friends after Orton was signed. It’s not like they’re lifelong friends. If he likes what the Chiefs have to offer, I doubt if Cassel will get in the way.
Tarkus - February 22, 2012
so you think they are keeping Orton?
Bigcherokeechief - February 22, 2012
And now that I'm thinking about it
why should we believe anything that management says from arrowhead?
Bigcherokeechief - February 22, 2012
They have the same agent and that would play a huge part in it .
As Ive said from the start Ive always thought if we wanted to move on from Matt then right now they have the perfect situation in which to do so without it being that big of a deal .
Since Romeo is takings over and credits Orton with helping him clinch the job and most admit that coaches like to pick there own guys . Well the no one would be surprised if Romeo wanted to stay with Orton and we decided to move matt especially if we did it quickly and quietly.
With them having the same agent thats the only way I see this playing out .
They let the agent know that Romeo wants to go with Orton and if he wants to contact other teams and see whats out there he can do that . This allows Matt at the start of free agency to contact Seattle or some other team and allows us to enter into serious talks with Orton on a nice incentive based contract
Willie Beamon - February 22, 2012
not true...
any free agent that wants to test the market will not sign prior to free agency. Orton made it abundantly clear that he wants to take time to evalutate his options. KC may very well want him back and Kyle may be waiting to weigh his options. There is no reason to assume that KC doesn’t want Kyle Orton. In fact, RAC’s praise for Orton would lead one to believe that he (RAC) would gladly have Kyle back.
neiowakcfan - February 22, 2012
Where would Orton be a sure starter?
Nowhere. A guy like him would have to compete for a starting job.
dablueguy - February 23, 2012
You all have given up on Stanzi
and he has yet to have an OC worth a shit, a head coach that believes in his potential at the very least, and an entire off-season.
Prepare to eat crow.
neiowakcfan - February 22, 2012
I haven't "given up" on Stanzi
I just don’t have high expectaitions. There’s a big difference. While I would be thrilled if Stanzi became the QBOTF, I’m not expecting much from a 5th round pick who struggled with consistency through most of his college career before having an outstanding senior campaign. Stanzi passed all of the litmus tests for successful NFL QBs and may be the guy in the future. I think if he had to step in and play, he could perform similar to fellow fifth round pick TJ Yates; not bad, but not exactly what you want to hang your team’s future on.
Chiefs4Life - February 22, 2012
He won the Orange Bowl as a junior...
and a playoff win would be a huge step for these KC Chiefs… ‘cuz you can’t get to a Super Bowl without winning a few playoff games.
I just find it interesting that everyone is clamoring for the next great college QB that KC is not in a position to draft that has a lesser resume than a guy that’s already on the roster.
Bring in Luck, he starts day one. Same for RGIII. Big contract, too. They win six or eight games, and everybody’s happy.
Start Stanzi, win 10 or 12, and it’s because he has tools around him. I’m personally pretty okay with that.
neiowakcfan - February 23, 2012
Just curious how winning the Orange Bowl as a junior equates to winning a playoff game
SCKSChief - February 23, 2012
This man speaks the truth
Still, I don’t think Clausen has it in him to be the “miracle” guy if he’d magically get his chance.
SCKSChief - February 23, 2012
Orton > Henne > Quinn > Clausen
KansasCityShuffle - February 22, 2012
Almost feel like Henne is a foregone conclusion
A) Parcells drafted him
B) Our OC was his former
KansasCityShuffle - February 22, 2012
I didn't even think of that
You may be on to something there

No matter how much you shake and dance, the last two drops go in your pants.
Face Painter - February 22, 2012
Henne would be a great backup
I think he brings the same tools as #7. Unfortunately, when you have #7 and #7 2.0 competing, things don’t look good, do they?
SCKSChief - February 23, 2012
I'd take Quinn over Henne
Joel Thorman - February 22, 2012
Yes I still can't figure out why Quinn hasn't been good in the NFL
Joel Thorman - February 22, 2012
Please don't mock me
Joel Thorman - February 22, 2012
I agree
I thought the plan was to bring in someone to compete with Cassel, not someone who you’d pretty much assume is going to be his backup. We have his backup in Stanzi, we need someone that’ll truly push for the #1 spot.
Chief Willie Wildcat - February 22, 2012
yes we have Stanzi, but they don't seem to think much of him as competition
Cassel the guy, Pioli still believes he can be good, but we do need a replacement for palko, so will bring in someone and call them competition.
Bigcherokeechief - February 22, 2012
take a chill pill on the Stanzi
He has yet to benefit from an entire off-season with no lock-out, and is finally rid of Haley, who clearly played favorites with certain players.
Daboll may very well realize the gem that is The One.
neiowakcfan - February 22, 2012
I wouldn't feel too bad
I attempted to suggest Jimmy Clausen in one of the free agency threads and it didnt go too well.
I had a large fanpost on him ready to submit , but I went to gauge reactions and decided that he would not be a good topic for me to make my first fanpost on.

Almost everyone bombs in Cleveland
and he had no chance in Denver with Teblow there
KingChief - February 22, 2012
Quinn got less of a chance in Cleveland than Clausen got in Carolina.
Fozzyboyd - February 22, 2012
Thought it was awesome that he called Tebow out
That was nice. And Quinn was right, too. It was luck. A lot of luck and their defense playing out of their heads.
SCKSChief - February 23, 2012
Because his first nameis Brady, not his last name.
nateforchiefs - February 22, 2012
From what I hear, he got work out happy
and the extra beef effected his throwing.. He was god awful in cleveland, but who knows.
Bigcherokeechief - February 22, 2012
If I remember the draft, he was workout happy in college too.
Fozzyboyd - February 22, 2012
Neither can I
I know there is a lot of anti-Notre Dame angst out there, but Quinn looked legit when playing in college. It may just be the stank of Cleveland, since there is no reason any other QB they’ve drafted shouldn’t have succeeded. Colt McCoy looked like the real thing in college, too.
Chiefs4Life - February 22, 2012
That's because you evaluate talent based on looks
KansasCityShuffle - February 22, 2012
From what limited I've seen of Henne
in MIA dude can play. Also thought the same of Moore. Realizing now this more be of a reflection on Daboll
KansasCityShuffle - February 22, 2012
I'd rather have Moore than Henne
but I’d rather have either than Cassel.
Though maybe your right and Daboll can sprinkle some magic dust on Cassel and make him productive.

KansasCityShuffle - February 22, 2012

MNchiefsfan - February 22, 2012
Cam is from another planet
but yea, no to Clausen.
km230015 - February 22, 2012
True. He's a freak of nature
MNchiefsfan - February 22, 2012
Not quite the same.
Newton also had Olsen and Shockey at tight end, a less disgruntled Steve Smith, and slightly healthier running backs.
Matt Moore also looked terrible two years ago, despite looking very promising three years ago and quite good last year for the Dolphins.
That being said, there’s no denying that Newton is far more talented than Clausen, and that he did a lot with not much.
Also I do not want Clausen here.
MtHammer - February 22, 2012
Good call on the TEs
Although I’d argue Smith coming around was a direct result of the QB play…
MNchiefsfan - February 22, 2012
I still can't believe that happened.
He’s gotta fall off the planet this year right?
craig in calgary - February 22, 2012
I'd think so
I couldn’t BELIEVE how relatively polished he was as a passer. The man is a freak of nature.
He’s like a mix physically of Tebow, Russell, and Vick. Only he doesn’t have their worse qualities…
MNchiefsfan - February 22, 2012
Bingo - and I'd rather have Palko back
I don’t even want them to bring him in for a workout, no no no and quadruple no.
Ochophosphate - February 22, 2012
Don't you put that evil on KC, Ocho.
Take back what you said about Palko, that is going too far.
but no Jimmy, please. He is not Competition.
km230015 - February 22, 2012
I'd rather have Boomer Grigsby at QB

I honestly couldn’t think of who would be worse, or who the next worst option would be… which is why I went with Palko.

No.

He's a free agent...
no reason for him to be released.
ICTChief - February 22, 2012
What is
a late round QB that Pioli will draft? I thought I heard him talking about the drafting mentality of drafting one QB a year… Doesn’t Green Bay do that or something? If so, who would that guy be?
SwimCoach - February 22, 2012
Kirk Cousins
KansasCityShuffle - February 22, 2012
Bingo
SwimCoach - February 22, 2012
great another guy with accuracy problems
Bigcherokeechief - February 22, 2012
Accuracy problems?
Cousins didn’t have a single season with less than 60% completion rate. Conversely, Stanzi only had one season with higher than 60%. I’ve only watched Cousins on a few occasions, but thought he looked composed and made good decisions with the football.
Chiefs4Life - February 22, 2012
Cousins played in the Outback Bowl.
Stanzi won an Orange Bowl.
Stanzi was third in the nation in passing efficiency in 2010, the year he completed over 64% of his passes.
neiowakcfan - February 22, 2012
I've seen Kirk Cousins ranked as the 4th best QB on the board
You think he’ll last past the 3rd?
aasukisuki - February 22, 2012
I don't think he will drop,

I'm just basing it off Pioli's comments from last year
If they are gonna draft a QB a year as a late round flyer/possibly developmental guy, then that is one I wouldn’t mind seeing.
ChiefsFan4Life634 - February 22, 2012
gotta have more than two QB's...
and Palko doesn’t count.
So, yeah, sign or draft another QB, and it doesn’t HAVE to be RGIII or Luck. Just not Tannehill.
neiowakcfan - February 23, 2012

Just kidding. I don’t know about Clausen. Didn’t think much of him going into the draft, but the farther he fell, I started thinking maybe. Then, I was glad we didn’t . After I saw him play, I was really glad. Still just don’t see him as an option at this point, but do think we could do worse… like Palko.
KCMizzou - February 22, 2012
Not sure myself...
I just have this Stanzi = Croyle feeling about this whole situation. I wouldnt mind seeing a upgrade at the backup qb position.
Sea of RED - February 22, 2012
Stanzi is much more durable than Croyle.
Stanzi will win some NFL games as a starter, something Croyle could not manage. If Stanzi doesn’t get at least as much of a shot as Croyle, it will be criminal.

fongKC - February 22, 2012
No way Brees will be able to look for another deal. The Saints won’t let it get that far.
JComp11 - February 22, 2012
we have more money to spend though!
fongKC - February 22, 2012
That has nothing to do with it. If they don’t reach an agreement he’ll get the exclusive tag.
JComp11 - February 22, 2012
Plus
No way Brees wants to leave. He’s the king of that city…and could probably get away with murdering someone in broad daylight
craig in calgary - February 22, 2012
Yep, discussed that yesterday. He means more to the city than any other player in the NFL, and that appears to be mutual.

Clausen has already committed to the University of Kansas a source tells me
Speck60 - February 22, 2012
Clausen is an interesting option
We can also try Matt Leinart. I think the talent is there, but the lifestyle and the injuries an bad luck had hurt his career. With the weapons in KC any one of them can be a good option
Ulises Harada - February 22, 2012
Jimmy Clausen? Really... I mean ..REALLLLLY?
Seriously, if Clausen was brought in to compete with #7 – it tells me one thing and that is Matty is still Pioli’s baby. Why da F would the Chiefs bring in a guy who can’t beat out Matt Moore to compete with #7? Clausen is hardly an upgrade to Palko. That’s just a waste of time and effort.
58 was my friend - February 22, 2012
you havent watched clausen throw if you dont think he can compete with cassel
He did some amazing stuff with notre dame. Give him a fair shake with a team. He only played half of one season
Rupert Daniels - February 22, 2012 via mobile
clausen would be an awesome addition.
Hes a guy we need, hes not limited by physical ability. He just needs a shot.
Rupert Daniels - February 22, 2012 via mobile
Man oh man,
this sounds like the beginning of the paths we’ve traveled with Croyle and Cassel:
—he just needs a shot
—the receivers keep dropping the balls
—the O-Line can’t protect him
—the playcalling doesn’t cater to his strengths
I do not want to get into another situation with a QB who needs a handful of loud fans making excuses for him.
Face Painter - February 22, 2012
I don't think Cassel's physical tools are anywhere near Claussen's.
At least not where Claussen’s were coming out of college. He may have regressed badly since then, I don’t know.
polodude017 - February 22, 2012
That is a clear sign - NFL is not for guys like this
If you’re a true gamer, you love the GAME of football, it does not matter how bad the conditions, you’d cherish every opportunity to have the chance to play in a professional league. CLAUSEN REGRESSED? I’ll pass

ScoutSoldier - February 22, 2012
I think the real question here isn't Claussen vs. the other FA QB's.
It’s how do you feel about Claussen vs. the 2nd/3rd round QB prospects in the draft. He’s young and without much experience. Do you like him more than Foles, Weeden, Osweiler, Cousings? The guy was talked about as a top-5 pick that year, so there was obviously some things to like.

polodude017 - February 22, 2012
Bill Wiliamson thinks it Might me Chad Henne,
“Bill Williamson believes free agent QB Chad Henne “has to be considered one of the possibilities” to compete against Matt Cassel in Kansas City."
Source: http://espn.go.com/blog/afcwest/post/_/id/40042/mailbag-chad-henne-in-kansas-city
Not really sure what to think about that and looking at the available FA Henne has to be at the top. id rather have Orton (and obviously Rg3), but at least this guy has been a starter and knows Dabolls system. what do y’all think?
Jeremy Daniel - February 22, 2012
Oh boy. Another below average QB to come to the Kansas City Chiefs.
bossmanham - February 22, 2012

Jeremy Daniel - February 22, 2012
"Clausen was once thought to be a first round pick"
Only by dumbass Mel Kiper…
Todd McShay got the last laugh on that one. Claussen sucks, Quinn sucks, Henne sucks. This better not be the “competition” they bring in for Cassel. Anything less than Orton on the totem pole of QB talent is just lip service to cover the fact they want Cassel’s job to remain safe.
CapsLockKey - February 22, 2012
Mel Kiper is the biggest joke, He gets paid to say BS like that. McShay puts him in his place every yr. Love it!
Jeremy Daniel - February 22, 2012
Vince Young with this offense would be so hyphy
Half the time Ds would be trying to tackle burners (McCluster, Charles, Breaston) and half the time trying to tackle manbeasts (Young, Bowe, Baldwin, Moeaki). I’d like to take a risk for once on an exciting player…and much to all of our chagrin, we’re not getting RG3
Another Successful Tedford QB - February 22, 2012
No to VY he's even slower at reading d than Cassel is. Cassel sucks, but at least he stays positive. You will have to worry about that with VY too..just saying
Jeremy Daniel - February 22, 2012
This made me laugh
“He completely blows, but dammit he chucks those balls into the ground with a good attitude!”
severn58 - February 22, 2012
Vince Young sucks
I’d rather not see the Chiefs become the next Broncos and end up having 3 running backs in their backfield.
CapsLockKey - February 22, 2012
oh hell no please i just couldnt root for jimmy he sucks.
woody555 - February 22, 2012
I'd rather have Chad Henne
JC25FoMVP - February 22, 2012 via mobile
id go for Colt McCoy
the guy was decent with garbage receivers, and so so line and ehh running game. we have a much better line, awesome receiving core, and stellar running game. id think he’d do good.
nfamous209 - February 22, 2012
I think he might be prone to Sidney Crosby Sydrome.
Brad-KC - February 22, 2012

Jimmy Clausen? don't you mean Matt Cassel 2.0
How about Brady Quinn? I still think he could develop into a decent starter
saints_chiefsfan1979 - February 22, 2012
I live in Charlotte, and have seen Jimmy play two games two years ago.
The issue with Clausen is mostly about confidence. The kid has absolutely no confidence in his game whatsoever. It affects his performance on the field, and it didn’t help that John Fox had no interest whatsoever in trying to help. Also, the supposed leaders on that team, like Steve Smith, couldn’t have cared less about him.
I’m not saying that we should get him because of that, because he may never truly gain the confidence in his game in order to succeed, but he was put in a situation with a team that was severely lacking in talent, surrounded by coaches and player who simply didn’t care.
Topchief1 - February 22, 2012
Well said. NFL is not for a guy like Jimmy.
Hello… isn’t the QB a position where the athlete possess leadership exuberance and confidence?
58 was my friend - February 23, 2012
Its going to be Chad Henne
He’s already played in Daboll’s system and is a contrast to Cassel. Henne has the big arm and is a gym rat who people follow.
arrowhead_fanatic - February 22, 2012
Daboll and the Dolphins head coach were trying to dump Henne for Orton after the lockout .
Willie Beamon - February 22, 2012
i hope thats just a rumor. seriously. henne sucks.

Brady Quinn was drafted by Crennel
It could be him
saints_chiefsfan1979 - February 22, 2012
after his comments to gq, he eliminated himself from chiefs list. pioli wont handle people opening their mouth, let alone for 50 mins to gq
SDChief - February 22, 2012
that was taken out of context
Even the guy that wrote the article admitted it. Non issue
saints_chiefsfan1979 - February 23, 2012
Boo clausen, boo brady quinn. boo henne.
need i say more?
SDChief - February 22, 2012
You forgot
Kyle Orton, Jason Cambell, Elvis GrBac
TEXAN_CHIEF - February 22, 2012
of that group i can live with orton for a full season, he is a game manager and play action guy who would benefit from a healthy charles
thats worst case, of course i know cassel is most likely starting. sigh.
SDChief - February 22, 2012
Why wait for Orton?
And be another season of ho hum 7-9, 8-8, another year of not trying to develop our own guy, watching another rent-a-qbcome up short. YAY!!!Another ringing endorsement for mediocrity and 40+years of no SuperBowls!!
TEXAN_CHIEF - February 22, 2012
Are you Nostradamus?
How do you know we will have the same type of year with Orton Quarterbacking a whole season?
ChiefWarPaint - February 22, 2012
What makes you think Orton
after 7 years of mediocrity is leading us to the promised land? Please do tell, your basing your expectations based on his 3 games here? Selective memory isrampant among Chiefs fans how quickly we forget our last 2 victories over the Orton lead Broncos and how “much better” he looked those days.
TEXAN_CHIEF - February 22, 2012
None of those years were with the current Chiefs team
ChiefWarPaint - February 22, 2012

I hear their HC made him look like Chicken Salad.
