For what I believe is the first time, Kansas City Chiefs GM Scott Pioli has addressed Kent Babb's story in the KC Star, 'Arrowhead Anxiety'. Everyone's read the story by this point so we won't rehash it but, as far as I can tell, Pioli hasn't addressed it (he wasn't quoted in the story) so I wanted to share what he said on radio row in Indianapolis this week.
The Chiefs GM was first asked about it on WEEI's The Big Show with Glenn Ordway and Michael Holley (author of "War Room") and then again this morning on 810 WHB. Here's what he said on WEEI:

On the story: "You ask two different people and you get two different stories. I know what we do have there. There are a lot of employees who are very, very happy, very energetic, really enjoy what they're doing and they love accountability and being held to a certain standard. I see it as a place where there are a lot of people who are very happy to work there and love the ownership."
On the phone bugging: "Yeah, I heard that, or I read that. Clark Hunt and Mark Donovan said it at the time and I'll say it again: unequivocally, completely, totally untrue."
On why someone would think the phone bugging is true: "I make a habit of not speaking for other people so if people say or think certain things I'm not going to try to play a dime store psychologist and figure out why people say things they say."
Thomas Dimitroff, who was on the air with Pioli at the time, was then asked about his team's one-and-done streak in the playoffs lately but the Falcons GM jumped back to the topic of the KC Star story to defend Pioli.
"Before I go any further," Dimitroff said, "I'd just like to say that article is a ridiculous assertion. Scott Pioli is one of the top notch executives in this league. When you go into a building you try to turn things around and change the proverbial arrow, move it up. There are going to be some tough decisions to be made and from what I understand and knowing Scott he's going to do all in his power to make that organization what that organization should be, an historic organization. He's the man the city of Kansas City needs, and the Clark Hunt family."
As for the report that the Chiefs fired Haley with cause and they aren't paying him the balance of his contract, Pioli didn't confirm or deny that on 810 WHB this morning.

that's just wrong ... I knew it, the "fix" is in!
one thing, I’m glad the new media guy (Crews?) is working so hard already … on task, spinning and really earning every penny he’s making … great “value” there
upamtn - February 3, 2012
You do have to wonder
why Dimitroff felt the need to make that statement when the conversation had shifted. Does Pioli think his phone is bugged?
Aiken_Drum - February 3, 2012
maybe it's Dimitroff doing the bugging! *gasp*

The real bugger is…SHHHH!…(King Carl)…don’t tell anybody.

Because he sees someone he knows and likes getting (in his view) unjustly attacked?
I’d speak up too
MNchiefsfan - February 3, 2012
Yes
This of course is a character flaw. Knee jerk, unsolicited and spur of the moment comments in a public forum often achieve exactly the opposite of the intended effect. You assume that he was trying to help. How do you know? Way too much behind the scenes stuff here for us to know why this comment was made. It seems simple on the surface and it may have been well intentioned but what unintended consequences could come from it? This is what is often referred to as a ‘loose cannon’.
Aiken_Drum - February 3, 2012
I'd never thought of that as a character flaw
Regardless of forum (unless you’re somewhere like court)

Kind of like the assertion of taping practices of the opposing team.
Stuff like that follows you.
THE_TRUTH - February 3, 2012
And I'm not saying either were directly involved...but they were indirectly.
THE_TRUTH - February 3, 2012
Because they were of the same organization?
Can’t imagine Pioli, as personnel director, having anything to do, directly or indirectly, with those incidents. That’s just foolish.
ArrowSpread - February 3, 2012
Kind of like that leader and chief in the 70's with the hotel in D.C.
Totally foolish to believe.

TRSChief - February 3, 2012
What's up with Pioli answering questions lately
It seems so out of character because he hasn’t given us anything in the previous years. It’s nice to actually get some info from the team and just not have everyone guessing what’s going on over at Arrowhead
KingChief - February 3, 2012
I think he opened his eyes (see the picture of him with Clark when they canned Haley) and realized he had to make some changes
Fans, etc. weren’t in Pioli’s corner and by not saying anything as per usual, may indicate some level of guilt so Pioli seems to be more forth coming lately. Clark Hunt could have some influence on this as the front office needs to be more fan-freindly than the past couple years to put people in the seats at Arrowhead. Same goes for the HC Crennel. I think by publicly praising Orton, puts some pressure on Pioli to not sandbag him to Cassel, smart move by Crennel.
Chiefs_KC - February 3, 2012
Not long ago, maybe like a month ago or so
Pioli stated he will begin being more vocal to the press and the fans. He’s learning how to evolve in a different football atmosphere.
Chiefs_swagger - February 3, 2012
Which in and of itself
Was quite the admission…
MNchiefsfan - February 3, 2012
Yeah, I totally figured he'd admit to running Stalag 13.
I have no idea on what happened or what goes on inside the offices at Arrowhead, but I am pretty sure that Pioli’s office underlings are held to a much, much higher standard than he or his football team seem to be.
I think the guy is a clueless jerk.
F250 - February 3, 2012
At least he doesn't drive a Ford.

BCRavenJHawkfan - February 3, 2012
well said
and rec’d
Chiefs_swagger - February 3, 2012
Exactly
and what’s worse is that the KC media can write whatever they want and get away with it because Pioli likes to keep everything in house. He’s a perfect target.
Brad-KC - February 3, 2012
The option is to speak
Like it or not, Pioli is a public figure and if he doesn’t want to be in the media eye, go be an accountant somewhere.
I don’t understand the backlash against Babb, how is the ex-HC claiming his phone is bugged NOT a story?
I haven’t seen anything the media being written being discredited. If the cellphone bugging is a false accusation, it’s a blackeye for Haley, not Babb, and still equally a story.
craig in calgary - February 3, 2012
Let me explain this to you
Todd Haley: Hey Kent, check this out
Hands Babb his cell phone
Kent Babb: What am I looking at here?
Todd Haley: My cell phone… it’s bugged. Can you believe it?
Kent Babb: Wow, Pioli is a freak, I should go write an article about this
Unfortunately for Pioli, LIES are being spread about him. THERE IS NO PROOF. If he F’d up…. then yeah, he should pay the consequences. Instead, he did nothing wrong and Babb made our Organization look like a freak show.
Brad-KC - February 3, 2012
The Kansas City news media as a whole dissapoint me.
The Kansas City Star…
Channel 4 “Call for Action”…
I have see first hand how they (local news media) can take ‘half truths’, twist & turn words, and turn one situation into a COMPLETELY different situation. They cherry pick quotes, take them out of context and make something that is boring and dull and turn it into something ‘sensational’. I would say “I miss the days when news reporters had ‘integrity’” but the truth is, I’m not sure if those days EVER existed. Both of them (Star / "Call for Action") are a joke…don’t get me wrong, they may not be outright lying, but you can bet your sweet ass that NEITER of them are going to give you the whole/real story.
DivineGrace - February 3, 2012
You are a reporter.
The recently fired head coach makes an accusation his cellphone is bugged.
Your next article is going to be between this story and the Royals battle for the 7th bullpen spot.

Matt Cassel is touring with Van Halen this year?
That kicks ass!
So I guess that means Stanzi is now the starter until we sign someone?
TRSChief - February 3, 2012
No, #7 still is
he’ll stop by the Chiefs games on Sunday and head back out right after. No practice required cause he’s THAT good.
SCKSChief - February 3, 2012
That's good
Because if he had to leave a game early to go play a show, we’d be all like, “Yo Matt, how bout you Finish What Ya Started?”
TRSChief - February 3, 2012
And then Pioli would be all like, "Well I might as well jump...at the opportunity to look for other QBs"
TRSChief - February 3, 2012
Or not
He’d be all like, “Yo, you ignorant minions of Chiefs Nation…suck it. He’s the guy and he’ll be the guy til he’s dead. We’ll just put Palko back in, or run with Arenas in the Wildcat.”
SCKSChief - February 3, 2012

Gotta say, I’ve been reading AP for a few years now. 1st year and a half, articles only… last 6 months, comments. Gotta also say I’ve laughed alot in the last 6 months.
Bottom line, Chiefs have a horrible track record with drafting QB’s. We’re finally in a position to make a run at a decent FA QB (Orton) or swing for the fences and try to land Manning. Either way, I’m in!

71-South - February 3, 2012

Wichita Chief - February 3, 2012
I'm not sure that
is a totally fair assessment. The Chiefs haven’t drafted a 1st round quarterback since Blackledge. It’s all been mid-round draft picks since then. Over the last 30 years KC has almost exculsively tried to fill their QB needs through free agency and (mostly) trades.
So yeah. The teams that have been willing to get back on the horse and take another QB after their last one busted have better track records drafting QBs than we do. Because they actually try. The fact that Carl Peterson didn’t hit on Brodie Croyle in the 3rd or whatever has precisely zero bearing on whether Scott Pioli would hit on a QB in the first.
That being said, I (just like every other Chiefs fan) would love it if Pioli and Hunt went and got Manning to come to Kansas City.
MtHammer - February 3, 2012
IDIOTS in the Kansas City media
are going to run Pioli out of town. Why would he want to work here with a bunch of clowns reporting garbage about him and the organization? I’ll never take anything Kent Babb says seriously again.
Kent Babb = Jason Whitlock.
Brad-KC - February 3, 2012
Pioli is in the public eye
so it comes with the territory
KingChief - February 3, 2012
Uh. The KC Star has a top shelf sports page and has launched numerous highly successful careers.
They don’t do that by reporting garbage. Pioli knew the high profile position he was getting in to. If he can’t take it he can find a new profession.
HIV 2 Elway - February 3, 2012
High flying careers like Jason Whitlock!
Face it, Babb is just filling the Whitlock void.
And what a void it is…….physically.
BCRavenJHawkfan - February 3, 2012
yeah Brad ... Babb write something positive about the organization, but since it's from him it must be a pack of lies
upamtn - February 3, 2012
There's scrutiny
and then there’s people saying he was tapping their phones? Babb should be fired.
Brad-KC - February 3, 2012

upamtn - February 3, 2012
Why can't the state just run the media and filter out anything unpleasant?
HIV 2 Elway - February 3, 2012
There's a difference between reporting unpleasant news
and reporting false news unpleasantly.
Brad-KC - February 3, 2012
What is false?
HC claimed that his phone was bugged. That in itself is a story, and 100% true, regardless if Haley is on crack or not.
craig in calgary - February 3, 2012
Haley and Babb are at a bar
They get a little drunk, Haley says he think Pioli really has a vagina instead of a penis. Do you write a story on that without any proof?
Brad-KC - February 3, 2012
Well thats rational
HIV 2 Elway - February 3, 2012
The store isn't that the plumbing is odd.
The story is Haley says he believes it. The proof of the story is Haley said it out loud.
NJ Chiefs Fan - February 3, 2012
Difference being
That is a rediculous scenario, vs the Babb story which actually happened.
co-sign NJ Chiefs Fan, Haley saying it (if false) is almost a bigger story than if it was true
craig in calgary - February 3, 2012
Point is
Kansas City looks like a bad place to play or work for because of an article that was written without any proof.
Brad-KC - February 3, 2012
AND
coming from a disgruntled employee. How you could take that as a “story” and use it to describe the environment in KC is absurd.
Brad-KC - February 3, 2012
Read the article
Babb made no commentary. Nor do I believe he thinks its even true.
AGAIN, the story is that Haley made the accusations, regardless if they are true or not.
This is the last I’ll say of it.
craig in calgary - February 3, 2012
So... it was HIS article that painted the picture

This comment isn’t great at all. And I started it with “Uh.”
So put that in your pipe and chew on it!
TRSChief - February 3, 2012
Pipe and SMOKE it my friend....mixed metaphor fail.
Just be sure to remember that people in glass houses gather no moss.
Now make like a tree and GTFO.
chiefsandcigars - February 3, 2012
*whoosh*
TRSChief - February 3, 2012
Uh.
Pontiac GTFO?
severn58 - February 3, 2012
Nice call back.
Very topical.
TRSChief - February 3, 2012
He's not the hero the city wants
but the hero it needs
LHO - February 3, 2012
"Before I go any further," Dimitroff said, "I'd just like to say that article is a ridiculous assertion. Scott Pioli is one of the top notch executives in this league. He's the man the city of Kansas City needs...
…but not the one it wants right now. So we’ll hunt him. Because he can take it. Because he’s not our hero. He’s a silent guardian, a (very) watchful protector. He is… Clark’s Knight."
MtHammer - February 3, 2012
Bane chimes in..
“When Arrowhead is in ashes, you have my permission to sign Peyton”.
severn58 - February 3, 2012
Winner!
TRSChief - February 3, 2012

Is going to be THA SHIZNITONBAMSNIPSNAPSIZZLE !
KCinIL - February 3, 2012 via mobile

CapsLockKey - February 3, 2012

I got faith in Nolan!
KCinIL - February 3, 2012 via mobile
Sweet
Now this story can shut the fuck up
KCinIL - February 3, 2012 via mobile
I'd be here in the heat of things,
But we just closed on a house. So yah…all i got is obviously only guilty people would deny their guilt.
bossmanham - February 3, 2012 via mobile
Yep.
An innocent person would admit to it, so Pioli is obviously guilty!
Tarkus - February 3, 2012
Or try to reverse some of the negative PR so that you know they could get back to hiring a coaching staff.
Enjoy your house!
Ray Brown - February 3, 2012
I guess the dozens of current and former Chiefs employees who talked to Babb were lying.
Pioli has no need to change. Cheap coffee, no missing pens and and an absence of candy wrappers prove he’s on the job.
Stay the course. Nothing to see here.
ChiefConcern - February 3, 2012
Ha dozens?
Right…….the power of “un-named sources”. Could just be 1 damn pissed off ex employee that turns into “many anonymous people”.
KCinIL - February 3, 2012 via mobile
So the reporter lied
about the number of people he spoke with? Unlikely.
NJ Chiefs Fan - February 3, 2012
OH YEAH!? IF BABB IS SUCH A GOOD REPORTER, WHY ISN'T HE ALWAYS WRITING ARTICLES ON HOW AMAZING SCOTT PIOLI IS!?
CHECKMATE, H8TRS
MtHammer - February 3, 2012
Dear Star: I want to hear about how hot his wife is, or what movies he watches. Can't our news just be more like TMZ?
Love, America.
go_saleaumua - February 3, 2012
Sarcasm?
Cuz reporters never embellish? Lol
KCinIL - February 3, 2012 via mobile
Oh, the suspense....will ups win on his "OVER" & "UNDER" bets?
Stay tuned AP
Final outcome of AA story line to be determined…or not ever known….non-suspense…
WorL4Chiefs - February 3, 2012
This story is exactly why I cruise AP, but don't stop in nearly as often as I used to.
So often, the conversation turns into a name-calling, mouthbreathing blob of wasted time. Pretty sad really…
What we know: There are some angry Chiefs staffers, some worried Chiefs staffers, and some happy Chiefs staffers. We have a new owner, GM, business manager, and an entirely new way of doing things. The team is the major news draw for the entire city. The team hasn’t had nearly the kind of on-field success its fans (and we assume, management) would like.
A reporter talked to some people about working for the team. Some speculated, reflected, told some stories—maybe all of the above. The reporter put it in the paper and said (repeatedly) “I don’t know what to think, but here’s what I got from folks.”
The shite? It hit the fan. Beyond all of the above, it’s all an educated guess.
/waits to have fandom questioned, or to be called a homer-tastic bro-tard
//come at me
go_saleaumua - February 3, 2012
OMG a real fan wouldn't say that?
You homer-tastic bro-tard!
TRSChief - February 3, 2012
What you do? Simple. Eat this large bowl of Friskies right here, and fall asleep on my good black slacks.
That way I look like a Yeti when I go to talk to this businessmen about SEP-IRA’s….
go_saleaumua - February 3, 2012
*businessman
go_saleaumua - February 3, 2012
Yeah the fuzzy little bastids have a knack for doing that don't they?
Amazing how a 9 pound cat can leave 8 pounds of fur on work clothes you need to wear shortly after washing.
Not sure how, but they defy the laws of physics.
TRSChief - February 3, 2012
this might explain it
TDubb - February 3, 2012
Yup, Pretty much.
It really is a talent.
TRSChief - February 3, 2012
Conspiracy theory...
It was the Feds thinking Haley was trying to cover the points spread with those blow outs, or aliens.
12t - February 3, 2012
Conspiracy????
I really miss that Rubicon show that was on AMC a few years ago.
BCRavenJHawkfan - February 3, 2012
We should get Jessie Ventura...
to look into it.
