This might be a first.
Maybe no one noticed but the Kansas City Chiefs actually talked about an ongoing negotiation. On the team's website, Josh Looney writes:
Currently, the Chiefs are in discussions with Brian Daboll to become the team's next offensive coordinator.
Multiple outlets have reported that Daboll will be headed to the Chiefs so we're just waiting for an official confirmation from the team but I don't remember the Chiefs ever updating fans in the middle of a coaching search like this. They usually only comment on these things when it's done so for them to write on their website that they're "in discussions" with someone is a departure from the way they usually operate.
Maybe (probably) I'm the only one who actually cares about this but I found it very unusual.
I wonder why they did that.

So the NFL does not get mad at the Chiefs for detracting from the "Big Game"

Still on First Take every day.
Even though he hasn’t played a game in weeks.

That's because
he won a playoff game. Single-handedly. Threw for, like, 316 yards. Ten completions. Dude’s awesome. Greatest ever.

Pretty good interview he did with Skip Bayless

TRSChief - February 4, 2012
This.
The NFL doesn’t like this kind of stuff just before the SB. They’re just waiting until after the big game to make it official.
Tarkus - February 4, 2012
Damage control.
The league doesn’t like news distracting from the Super Bowl but obviously something slipped in the Daboll situation and the Chiefs are covering up for that now. To me this says to the fans ’we’re signing Daboll" and to the league “nothing has been or is being announced yet”.
GenericBrand - February 4, 2012
It's Weird
Why not just wait to say something until after the game? If they’ve hired him, there’s no harm in waiting. If they haven’t…well, that opens a whole new can of worms if hiring a guy nobody else seems to be after falls through.

That's a pretty good take, I think.

Both Richardson and Albert look pretty good against those smaller, quicker pass rushers.
The bigger stronger guys, with a bit of quickness off the snap are the ones who cause the most trouble for both, but especially T-Rich.
hmills110 - February 4, 2012
Heh. B-Rich.
hmills110 - February 4, 2012
I like the point GB made about Orton beng wanted by Daboll last year
Orton may be the QB competition Pioli talked about
IPWT2009 - February 4, 2012
Will he want to come back to KC?
and “compete” for a job with Matty Nice the golden boy?
ExRoyalsFan - February 4, 2012
My guess is we trade Cassel if we bring Orton back
Cassel has still got to be worth a 5th or lower
IPWT2009 - February 5, 2012
so theres a VERY VERY slim hope
that the Chiefs will do the right thing and drop him and get Saunders instead. .001% is still better than 0
slackator - February 4, 2012
I'm not sure Saunders would be a better option
that said, I can’t imagine Daboll not being confirmed by the team sometime later today
upamtn - February 4, 2012
Saunders has called some of the greatest offenses of all time
Daboll have been in the bottom 10 each year IMO Saunders is a HUGE improvement over just another failed Parcells tree coach
slackator - February 4, 2012
in 2011 the Raiders were 16th in total points at 22.4/game
the Dolphins were at 20.6/game … a difference of less than 2 pts/game with far, far, far fewer offensive weapons and less talent than the Raiders had at their disposal
upamtn - February 4, 2012
I believe I read that in Cleveland he had something like the 26th ranked Offense
where as Saunders in 2003 had the greatest offense of all time. To me thats all I need to know. Im not saying people cant improve but the truth is one of the greatest vs mediocre who MIGHT improve. Ill take the greatest every time
slackator - February 4, 2012
So are you of the opinion that if you put Daboll on the 2003 Chiefs with Green, Kennison, Holmes, Gonzalez, Roaf, Shields, etc., and put Saunders on the 2010 Browns with Colt McCoy, Peyton Hillis, and Mohammed Massaquoi
that the Browns would be the team with the elite offense?
MtHammer - February 4, 2012
Im of the opinion that the Browns would have been better yes
and the Chiefs would have not been as good. Elite and terrible Im not sure but things would have been different. If the quality of OC doesnt matter than that would mean Muir wasnt that bad and this offense will suck no matter who we have as an OC so why bother even having one.
Like I said One of the greats vs Parcells coaching tree mediocrity Ill take the greats EVERYTIME
slackator - February 4, 2012
you cant really believe that
Saunders is not great, he rode Vermeils offense in 03 and Hue’s offense this past season, he is not good and would not have done anything with the Browns, if his offense is so great then why has none of his offenses led a team to a SB
banshee_01 - February 4, 2012
sure okay you got me
I dont believe anything I type
AL SAUNDERS SUCKS AND DABOLL WILL LEAD US TO THE SB WITH HIS 29TH RANKED OFFENSE BECAUSE HE IS FROM THE NE WAY
slackator - February 4, 2012
Heh. I do think Saunders benefited from rosters that could execute things the way they're
drawn up back in the office. I’ve never seen him make a silk purse out of a pig’s ear. He kind of reminds me of Mike Martz. Certain things he understands about offense, but what do you do when you don’t have the right players?
hmills110 - February 4, 2012
In Cleveland, Daboll's offense won
exactly as many Super Bowls as Saunders “greatest offense of all time.”
So he has that going for him.
neiowakcfan - February 4, 2012
sorry that logic doesnt fly with me
might as well hire me then because Im just as successful as Saunders using that logic and Id probably come cheaper than Daboll
slackator - February 4, 2012
Most of AP feels they could be just as successful and come cheaper.
go_saleaumua - February 4, 2012
I dont
Im just saying if your only judged by SB wins than Im just as successful thats why the logic doesnt fly with me
slackator - February 4, 2012
Bullshit. I expect more money than that.
hmills110 - February 4, 2012
Greatest offense of all time?
The 2003 Chiefs had a 13-3 record, but they didn’t have the greatest offense of all time. I guess the revisionist history proves that Chiefs fans haven’t had much to be thankful for in a long time.
And for the record, I’d rather have Saunders at OC.
old_school - February 4, 2012 via mobile
So would most of us.
Have to wonder whether Oakland was asking for draft picks in exchange…whereas Miami was willing to just let Daboll go.
go_saleaumua - February 4, 2012
“The season is best remembered for the Chiefs’ record-breaking offense. On December 28, running back Priest Holmes broke Marshall Faulk’s single-season rushing touchdown record by scoring his 27th rushing touchdown against the Chicago Bears. Quarterback Trent Green threw for 4,000 yards and kick returner Dante Hall returned four kicks for touchdowns.” per wikipedia
21st all time PPG
I cant seem to find it but I could have sworn the Chiefs either broke the yardage record or the points record during the Vermeil/Saunders era
slackator - February 4, 2012
Neither one
The rams, saints, viks, and pats have all had better offense(points, yards).
Tripower66 - February 4, 2012 via mobile
I know we set some record for greatness
and not just pathetic defense I JUST KNOW IT!!! :)
slackator - February 4, 2012
Might be they were franchise records, rather than league records.
hmills110 - February 4, 2012
maybe
I could have sworn it was league but oh well it doesnt matter, we got Daboll and I have to accept that for atleast the 1st week of the season
slackator - February 5, 2012
I can.
I think they’re waiting until after the SB to make it official.
Tarkus - February 4, 2012
possibly
upamtn - February 4, 2012
Yeah
Because the offense Saunders was running averaged a whole extra 2 PPG while having significantly better players.
Clearly the dude’s an upgrade, since he was able to coach a great offense with the GOLOAT (Greatest Offensive Line Of All Time). No one else could’ve done that, and he’s had massive success everywhere else since.
Oh wait…
Saunders isn’t all THAT clearly a better option.
MNchiefsfan - February 4, 2012
I know little about Daboll, but I'm not all that excited about Saunders.
Great stats from those years, but the playoff futility wasn’t all the fault of those defenses.
hmills110 - February 4, 2012
I hate they way the national media announces this hire

go_saleaumua - February 4, 2012
Well, as long as he gets a full pre-season,
he’ll improve. I promise you.
Wait, that was craig on Tebow. My bad.
neiowakcfan - February 4, 2012
Daboll Wtf
oh and I guess we’ll get Matt Moore for Qb, I thought Pioli was trying to keep his job. Look guys, Miami had a decent defense it was the offense why they wasn’t winning that many games.
mu-chief-stl.cards fan - February 4, 2012
no Matt Moore
but believe it or not I have seen people elsewhere clamoring for Chad Henne which is beyond stupid IMO
slackator - February 4, 2012
You mean the offense that hung 31 on us at Arrowhead in week 9
and averaged more than 24 ppg after that?
MtHammer - February 4, 2012
that was 22nd in the league
or 29th when he was at Cleveland, but hey 29 is an improvement from last years 31st under Muir
I see greatness ahead, you can never go wrong with the Parcells/Belichick coaching treeslackator - February 4, 2012
Sarcasm font fail.
Everybody loves the sarcasm font, until it cuts off half the text in your comment and then what? But you’ll get no argument from me that Miami offense started off poorly. But with no off-season and the personnel they had, I also think that’s understandable.
Let’s put it this way: If the Chiefs offense averages 24 ppg next year, it’ll be ranked quite a bit higher than 22nd. It would have been good for 10th just behind the Giants this year.
MtHammer - February 4, 2012
maybe so
but where does 30.25 that Saunders had with the Chiefs without the weapons we have now put us? If the hiring does indeed happen which theres a 99.9999% chance it does I hope he does indeed improve but Im just not seeing any evidence of that being the case to pass up on Saunders for
slackator - February 4, 2012
Wait up a second.
Is the implication here that Saunders didn’t have the kind of weapons back then that he would now? Because I like a lot of our offensive pieces quite a bit. But Trent Green was embarrassingly superior to Matt Cassel, the offensive line was one of the best ever, and Tony Gonzalez and Priest Holmes were in their primes. I like Bowe and Charles as much as the next guy but come on.
MtHammer - February 4, 2012
Green>Cassel
Holmes=Charles slight edge to Holmes but run the same kind of offense I think you would get similar results
2003 OL > 2012 OL but can be fixed easily wont be as good as the G.L.O.A.T. but can be good
TRich>McClain
now to the real comparisons
Gonzo>Moeaki but can be similar if Moeaki can stay healthy if not theres a few options out there to be recieving TEs
Kennison<Bowe
Morton<Breaston
HallCloud or whoever was our backup not counting 2.7 because he was still in diapers while Priest started
throw in McCluster and yes with Cassel either finally showing hes worth it or a solid QB magically somehow appearing out of the mists and a couple of upgrades to the OL this Offense has the potential to be better than 2003 especially when you consider they wont HAVE to score 30pts a game because we now have a defense
slackator - February 4, 2012
Yes, Mthammer. They got some things ironed-out up front, and Bush decided to run hard.
After that, they were pretty damn tough. I was surprised and sort of disappointed that they fired the HC, who had brought ‘em out of the rough spot. I’’d’ve given him another year, to see if they could continue the path they were on, after the KC game woke ’em up.
hmills110 - February 4, 2012
I first saw this on facebook
The Chiefs put the ‘discussions’ statement on there and my first impression was to wonder if they were trying to gauge fan response before actually pulling the trigger.
If so, it’s not going well. People are ripping it apart on there for the most part. Would be great if they actually haven’t done it yet and change their minds. I really doubt it though. Like someone said, it’s probably just damage control.
TheScootness - February 4, 2012 via mobile
Doubtful, IMO
ExRoyalsFan - February 4, 2012
Any chance they're doing this to gauge fan feedback?
It’s an uncharacteristic move for this franchise to let something like that “leak”; being that their reputation is a little tarnished right now, and with the hiring of a new PR guy, I wouldn’t be surprised if this is a method the Chiefs will take on more; letting nuggets slip out to gauge fan reaction. Not on everything – they will always make what they think is the best decision, but in some instances, I wouldn’t be surprised if they quit being so secretive and tried to find out what fans wanted first.
P.S. I’m thinking this is what the Steelers are doing with the Todd Haley for OC candidacy. They’ve interviewed several candidates, but they only posted about one on their official website; with Haley’s reputation, they might’ve been trying to find out how people reacted.
Probably wrong, but it’s a thought.
MattHoover - February 4, 2012
