The 2012 NFL season is officially over now that the New York Giants have beaten the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI. It was a memorable season for the Giants, and the same is true with the Kansas City Chiefs (although we had a lot more things to forget).
But we must move onto the offseason. Free agency comes on March 13 and there are a number of key dates to remember between now and then.
As we mentioned before, the franchise tag can be applied starting on February 20 and ending on March 5. The Chiefs could be players with the franchise tag due to the impending free agency of Dwayne Bowe and Brandon Carr.
The NFL Combine is the next big date after that -- it'll be take place in Indianapolis from February 22-28. The Chiefs will head down there for the week and meet with their future draft picks at Lucas Oil Stadium.
That leads us to March 13, which is when free agency starts. It's a 3:00 p.m. (Arrowhead Time) start this year as opposed to the midnight start we've seen in years past.
And the other big offseason date: March 8, the day Peyton Manning's bonus is due.
What part are you looking forward to the most? I might actually be more interested in the date Manning is cut than the Combine.

Ok so since free agency is the next big thing
Is there anyways we can actually find out how negotiations are going?

I'll take
Healthy, known players over rookies or Peyton (even though I’d love him).
Meaning, I’m mostly concerned with what will happen to Bowe/Carr.
Brad-KC - February 6, 2012
I agree
I’m completely concerned with the Bowe/Carr situations

What's wrong with a cheerleader head that bobbles?
Tarkus - February 6, 2012
I wonder what Daboll thinks about David DeCastro ...
upamtn - February 6, 2012
I think
It’s easier to acquire a good guard in FA than tackle. Ideally, in my mind, we’d pick up Nick and draft Reiff/Martin/Adams
Brad-KC - February 6, 2012
*Nicks
Brad-KC - February 6, 2012
Nicks is retty expensive, and I really doubt he leaves the Saints
and yeah, we could pick up a GOOD guard or even a VERY good tackle, but DeCastro is THE BEST hands down not even a question most excellent at Guard and a top-ten talent by any measure (we’ll be lucky if he’s available at out pick)
I’d rather have THE best guard than the second or third best tackle
just me (and a few others)
upamtn - February 6, 2012
I'd rather have the second best guard, plus the second best RIGHT tackle,
PLUS the best inside linebacker, PLUS the fourth or fifth best corner.
A good guard and a good tackle and a good linebacker and a good corner will kick a great guard’s ass every time. Four on one, just like WWE.
Brsrkr - February 6, 2012
WHOA
Brad-KC - February 6, 2012
OK, maybe overstating a little.
But we could easily get Zeitler or Konz or Glenn PLUS Minnifield or Hightower by trading down out of that 11/12 pick. Really good guard plus really good defender > great guard.
Brsrkr - February 6, 2012
a lot will depend on Daboll ... ZBS or Power?
Glenn and Konz more Power Blocking than ZBS if I’m not mistaken … we already have Hudson as a ZBS Center so where does that leave Konz? (not that he isn’t talented)
but then too … Great Guard + Jamaal Charles > Burfict (just sayin’)
upamtn - February 6, 2012
I've read that Glenn has good feet.
I like him because if we used him as a guard, he could also backup the RT.
I’d prefer a more power blocking scheme, but capable of pulling and traps. What did we run in 2003? Oh yeah, anything we wanted :) Wiegs was the center on that line, and Hudson is bigger than him.

upamtn - February 6, 2012
My real preference would be to trade that 11/12 for (hopefully) better value next year, and then use that to trade up for Barkley or other.
And my real preference over THAT would be RG3.
But trade down for really good picks is viable. The Pats’ two first rounders are only about 30-80 points away from our 11/12, and they need a CB.
Brsrkr - February 6, 2012
we'll see how it all goes down soon enough
nah, never soon enough … Combine should be next week, Free Agency the week after that and the Draft the week after that

Feel Bad for Carr
With all the good corners coming of college in this years draft. Think his days are marked. Unless he signs KC offer. That we all know it won’t be close to Flowers….
AngryKitty - February 6, 2012
You feel bad for a guy about to sign a multi-million dollar contract?
Tarkus - February 6, 2012
draft > free agency > combine
So, I guess the chronological order’s perfect.
If it’s a forgone conclusion that Manning gets cut, then nothing really unknown happens with him before March 13, right?
Brsrkr - February 6, 2012
Once he's cut
I believe teams can start talking to him immediately. I think the free agency period only matters for players still under contract from 2011. IOW, March 13th is when their contract ends.
Tarkus - February 6, 2012
We should try to sign the guy NE cut right before the SB then
KingChief - February 6, 2012
Clearly he was their missing piece yesterday.
Tarkus - February 6, 2012

Brsrkr - February 6, 2012
Or, a late fourth round pick.
Brsrkr - February 6, 2012
thought that was already determined
heard the Chiefs draft11, then again it would not surprise me with the ethics in journalism just in the last 10 years or so, that this was speculation
tomachop - February 6, 2012
I'm looking for the Colts to drop Manning
before the deadline. The whole Peyton thing intrigues me. It seems clear they are parting ways, just do it.
I don’t really care about the Combine. Let the professionals handle that, I’ve got other stuff to do.
Free agency, yeah, I’m interested in that. I’d like to see what KC does, if anything. Orton in particular. If Romeo holds sway, they should at least make a fair offer.
neiowakcfan - February 6, 2012
I want Manning...
but Orton will do in a pinch, and won’t cost what Manning will, and will allow us to keep Carr AND Bowe….
AnkenyChiefsFan - February 6, 2012
Everyone cross your fingers
And will for the best NTs available to not get franchised
MNchiefsfan - February 6, 2012
I'll do that.
But I’m too lazy to look up FA NT’s. Do you know who they are?
neiowakcfan - February 6, 2012
I like Paul Soliai
“Several sources” tell the Palm Beach Post the Dolphins are expected to switch to a 4-3 defense in 2012, and that as a result free agent NT Paul Soliai will be allowed to walk.
Brad-KC - February 6, 2012
Miami's D
was 3rd in the league for opponent rushing yards allowed.
Brad-KC - February 6, 2012
Hmm...
Garay, Pouha, Soliai are the 3 best from what I’ve seen.
But there’s also (I believe) Franklin and Rogers.
Those would be the five I’d be interested in.
MNchiefsfan - February 6, 2012
We're not gonna franchise Powe.
Brsrkr - February 6, 2012
Bam!
neiowakcfan - February 6, 2012
Ha! Nice
What his future holds will be pretty clear from what we do in FA.
Nothing= RAC thinks he’s ready to start and hold it down
Rogers= RAC thinks he could develop but needs a year or two
Garay or Soliai= RAC thinks he’s not too likely to pan out.
MNchiefsfan - February 6, 2012
Soliai - fourth round pick, 8 games and four tackles his rookie year.
Garay – sixth round pick, didn’t play more than six games in a season for his first four years.
Franklin – fifth round pick, one game his rookie year.
Patience.
Brsrkr - February 6, 2012
I wholeheartedly agree
And I thought Powe looked way ahead of the curb in preseason. However, what RAC does will show more to me about where he’s at than anything else.
If we go out and spend big on Soliai, it’ll be tough to argue that RAC thinks Powe’s got what it takes.
Best case scenario IMO is we totally ignore NT. Because that means RAC thinks he’s ready to be the guy.
MNchiefsfan - February 6, 2012
I think we sign Garay
He is 32 and he would make a good rotational player with Powe
KingChief - February 6, 2012
I bet we wouldn't have to spend big on soliai.
Just going by what happened to Franklin last year, and what happened to the big guys in the 2011 draft (several NT prospects fell right along with Powe), it seems like the NFL isn’t valuing dedicated 2-gap NTs that much right now. It’ll be interesting to see if Pitt moves for a Hampton understudy.
Brsrkr - February 6, 2012
I think they will draft Poe
KingChief - February 6, 2012
I'd like a rotation of Poe and Powe.
The Po’ Boys!
Tarkus - February 6, 2012
That would confuse a lot of people
KingChief - February 6, 2012
Hopefully opposing offenses.
Tarkus - February 6, 2012
The Powe Poe.
Bengals would hate us.
Brsrkr - February 6, 2012
I see what you did there!
AnkenyChiefsFan - February 6, 2012
Very good point
2-gap NT’s are not in demand as much as they were even a couple of years ago.
MNchiefsfan - February 6, 2012
That's how it seems, but I can't figure out exactly why.
Something to do with more passing, I guess. Romeo definitely runs a more evolving 3-4 than he did in the older days.
Brsrkr - February 6, 2012
I think part of it is the pass rushing issues
It’s hard to find a NT that can rush the passer, and nearly as hard to find 3-4 DE’s that are solid against both the run and the pass.
MNchiefsfan - February 6, 2012
A lot of 3-4 teams are going to shaded 1-gapping attacks.
Yeah, its to get more pressure on the QB’s by disrupting the middle. Kinda like the Steelers using their DE’s to disrupt the OL by stunting and looping.
Not the pure Bum/Wade Phillips style necessarily. But shaded between 0 and 1-tech. Examples: 49ers with Fangino; Packers with Dom Capers; Chargers. I’m hoping RAC goes this way even more, too.LocoLoboChico - February 6, 2012
So, get into the QB's lap,
and take a blocker with you. Easy to say….
Brsrkr - February 6, 2012
Yeah, basicallly
But either rip right past the blocker or shed him and at least collapse the pocket, if not outright penetrating it. But yeah, you need some pretty damn athletic guys like Soap, Raji, Justin Smith, JJ Watt, Mario Williams, Jay Ratliffe. But the DC (can’t recall his name) for the Cowboys under Phillips was using some BIG DE’s to draw either double teams and letting Ratliffe shoot the gaps unblocked, hopefully. Or using the big guys to shoot the gaps square on and just let them use their size and strength to run over or shed their blockers. And Rob Ryan seemed to continue that, basically, last season. I’d just like for RAC to go to more creative attacking D’s with Bailey and Houston coming on.
LocoLoboChico - February 7, 2012
Thanks for the info
Interesting stuff.
MNchiefsfan - February 6, 2012
Well your welcome, MN.
Yeah, Fangino is a great DC. He had Soap swiveling around and taking a step or two back like he was going to drop back into coverage, and he then swiveling back around and bullrushing into the C and LG and sealing them off while Bowman shot right thru on the delayed blitz off Soaps right shoulder to pressure Eli (but I don’t think he got the sack) in their regular season game.
And then Soap did another similar stunt but shading to the left of the C’s right shoulder, and then bullrushing left into the C and RG and sealing them off for Willis to shoot right past Soap’s right shoulder – and Willis did nail Eli on that play.
Then he has Smith and McDonald shading in or out at 5-tech (you can call it slanting in and hitting the OL’man at angles off the snap, IOW’s). While Aldon Smith swinging out wide from the 7 tech, or powering inside to shoot inside Justin Smith. He had Ahmad Brooks doing the same kind of stunts with McDonald.
Fangio is a Caper’s disciple, as you probably know. Anywho, he’ll use Pickett (or Green) out at SS 5 tech to draw a double team off Raji, and allow him to penetrate past a single blocker matchup. Or line up Green on the WS to draw a double team, and Wynne to rush the from the SS from 5-tech inside shade, and line Raji shaded in the 1i-tech on the C’s right shoulder, to allow both to penetrate.on the SS. Or he’d flip Wynn back over to the WS to rush from the 5-tech on a single blocker.
Now Wade/Bum Phillips would use the skinnier, faster guys to literally lineup right square in the middle of the gaps: like the NT in either A gap, and both DE’s right in the B gaps, and use their speed and skinniness to literally shoot right thru the gaps and past the OL’men hopefully unblocked. Well, ya know … just watch how the Texans do it. ;+) Have a good Tuesday!
LocoLoboChico - February 7, 2012
FA before Draft
What the Chiefs get in FA really determines what we (Chiefs) draft in the first couple of rounds.
Hopefully Bowe, Carr, Nicks
GaryfromIA - February 6, 2012
and if KC is to use the franchise tag
on Bowe or Carr we’ll know that by then, too.
neiowakcfan - February 6, 2012
I can't get a good feeling about Bowe/Carr
As in…do they want to stay in KC.
I just feel like Haley might have broke him down and pissed him off so he’ll look for a big market with a good QB. But then sometimes… I fell like he’s loyal to the Chiefs.
Carr…I think he like KC but at the same time…I think he wants to get out from under the shadow of Flowers.
Brad-KC - February 6, 2012
Bowe's language seems to indicate he'd stay
for the right contract. Carr is a bit more standoffish, but that could just be negotiating posture, or at least I hope so.
neiowakcfan - February 6, 2012
I would like KC to
resign Bowe, Carr, and McClain. Then go out and get them an RT and NT.
Mitul V. Patel - February 6, 2012
The most underrated story of the offseason.
Will we finally be rid of Thomas Jones? The second biggest mistake Haley ever made (behind Palko).
wustl_chiefs_fan - February 6, 2012
Hey now...
Jones actually played pretty well for us.
Last year.
For about the first ten games or so.
Scott B. - February 6, 2012
I don't think we were watching the same Thomas Jones
KingChief - February 6, 2012
You mean the one who helped Charles and the Chiefs be the #1 rushing team in the NFL?
Scott B. - February 6, 2012
well that would be decent year one...useless year 2. he was beat out for PT by jackie battle
SDChief - February 6, 2012
He was doing fine early on
Well, even. The bottom fell out a lttle over halfway through the year
MNchiefsfan - February 6, 2012
i think thats one of the biggest non story's....reason; look at twitter after the game, chiefs players all but said goodbye to him
add in his contract is up, and he was lousy this year….and im pretty sure its retirement or a 1 year deal elsewhere
SDChief - February 6, 2012
This year he had 478 yards and averaged 3.1
KingChief - February 6, 2012
Reply fail
KingChief - February 6, 2012
Very true. But I had originally said "last year".
He sucked this year. No doubt. But when he first got here last year, he actually played pretty well for a little over half the year. Then he fizzled out.
Scott B. - February 6, 2012
My brain left work early
so it missed the last year part
KingChief - February 6, 2012

niageriannit1 - February 6, 2012
did the Chiefs
borrow the plane that the Cleveland Indians flew in Major League??
GaryfromIA - February 6, 2012
Nope, Were going big time on clarks plane
niageriannit1 - February 6, 2012
Free Agency
But, we will not sign any for 2-3 weeks after the start of free agency. They won’t sign any big name stars that all sign hours after the start.
Mustang fever - February 7, 2012
As long as they go after Manning
and sign Bowe and Carr, I don’t care who else they get…would like to see them address either G or NT in FA, and then we can ignore those spots in the draft…
