The Kansas City Chiefs made it official and hired Brian Daboll as their new offensive coordinator. In the release provided by the team a few minutes ago, Daboll and head coach Romeo Crennel are quoted about the move.
"This is a great opportunity," Daboll said. "After meeting with Romeo, it was clear to me Kansas City was a good fit. I have a lot of respect for Romeo and a strong appreciation for the Kansas City Chiefs franchise. Romeo and I have similar ideas on the direction of the program and we have a good core group of players to get started with. I'm ready to get in as soon as possible and start working to be a part of something special."
With the injured guys like Jamaal Charles and Tony Moeaki coming back, the Chiefs do have the pieces in place to be a very dynamic offense.
"Brian is a fine football coach and offensive mind," said Crennel. "I worked with him when he was a young coach in New England and I am proud of the way his career has developed. We had a very thorough process for this position and it was clear to me that Brian was the right choice. He was coveted by multiple teams and I am glad he will be joining our staff."
Interesting tidbit from Crennel there -- Daboll was "coveted by multiple teams". I'm not sure who those teams were -- they never made it to the public -- but I found it interesting he noted that in his quote.

That "coveted by multiple teams" bit...
that’s part of the soft sell the Chiefs are trying to do to win the fans over on this guy’s less than stellar track record.
Buck'O - February 6, 2012
What they don't say
Is those teams that “coveted” him only wanted him for WR or QB coach.
But we shall see what happens…he deserves a chance to prove his worth.
Matt_Grbac - February 6, 2012 via mobile
Maybe he was a coveted water boy?
I hear he makes some high quality H20.
Tyran - February 6, 2012
oh please
Brad-KC - February 6, 2012
I was about to add that coveting him as Ball boy, or attitude adjuster doesn’t quite count.
Topchief1 - February 6, 2012
Would it really matter?
If X other teams wanted him or if 0 other teams wanted him?
All 32 teams wanting him wouldn’t matter to those that have predetermined that he’s going to fail here.
Not a single team wanting him wouldn’t matter to those either high on Daboll or at least willing to wait and see.
I guess I’m just saying I don’t know why Romeo would give a gerbil-turd about whether the fans do or don’t like this hire. And moreover, why he would try to smooth it over if he thought we didn’t.
Ochophosphate - February 6, 2012
I think it matters a great deal
and I’m sure the new PR man and probably Pioli have both said as much. Especially given the very public black-eye recently. It matters to the organization as a whole and as a result, it’s important to Romeo.
Buck'O - February 6, 2012
Ok, but do you really think that factored into the decision?
“Ok, I chose Daboll, and I know the fans aren’t going to like it, so let’s make sure we let these fans know that Daboll was wanted by a bunch of other teams so it looks like we got away with a good one. Make sense to everyone? Good… now Go Chiefs on 3. One, Two, Three, Go CHIEFS!”
As an organization – they care about winning football games. Winning football games is going to bring in a LOT more fans than making you or me happy about the OC they hired. Your opinion about nearly every coach on this staff will be fine if we are winning games.
It should have come down to this:
Question 1: Do we fee he will improve our organizations ability to win going forward?
Answer: If yes – good, let’s go. If no, next candidate please.
Question 2: Is this hire going to make the fan base feel good? And if not, is there a way we can spin it so that it does?
Answer: Who fucking cares.
Ochophosphate - February 6, 2012
Exactly
If the Chiefs were doing their hiring based on Question 2, then they really would be a joke of a franchise. Thank God that’s not how they do it. They need to get the people they feel are the best for the job, and that is their responsibility. Plain and simple.
cheapham - February 6, 2012
Not entirely true
They still have to sell tickets. No matter the circumstances teams will put a positive spin on everything to influence ticket sales. Anyone who thinks otherwise is ignoring half of an oganizations responsibilities.
Whether what is said is true and whether it works is up for debate, but teams will always spin.
Remember the PR guy in hard knocks prepping D-Bowe (I think) before his first interview, if you think those conversations don’t go on with every member of an organization that speaks to the media, you’re crazy.
just a guy - February 6, 2012 via mobile
Nothing sells tickets better than winning.
Therefore, they’re going to hire people who they feel gives them the best chance at that.
Tarkus - February 6, 2012
I'd be surprised if they actually felt that Daboll gives them that
OTOH, they may have scared off several better candidates with all of the drama
Buck'O - February 6, 2012
Well, it always takes two to make a deal.
But why else would they have hired him? They obviously didn’t do it because he was a fan favorite.
Tarkus - February 6, 2012
I'll buy that
Buck'O - February 6, 2012
This is truth.
Tomahawk29 - February 6, 2012
Awesome!
Tarkus - February 6, 2012
That's all fine and well if it were that simple but I don't think it is.
First off, compared to other possibilities, this guy’s resume looks like a turd. Second, you can bet the organization gives a shit about every last detail of fan approval right now. You factor both of those things in after a massive public black-eye and a season where the offense just plain stunk, I think it matters a whole lot. and FWIW, I think they should have made a better hire than this. As a fan who pays money to see this team, I fucking care.
Buck'O - February 6, 2012
Point taken
but if the team starts out strong and wins games – that erases everything. All of the off-season talk doesn’t matter anymore nor does his resume or whether we thought he was worth a damn or not.
I think I’ve slid off-track a little from the original comment… backing out of the rabbit-hole a bit here, I would say my original point was just that I don’t think Romeo is out there saying “Daboll was coveted” just to pat the average Chiefs fan on the head and make them feel warm and fuzzy. I think he was saying it because it was true and there were other suitors. No need to go down the “they’re going to sell this to us any way they can” implying that they’re blowing smoke up our ass. If he feels like this was the best choice, that’s it.
On another note – I don’t remember there being this much discourse after we hired Muir as OC last year, and that was a WAY more spotty pick-up than what we just pulled here. Even when we hired Solari to follow Saunders there was less bitching and moaning than over Daboll. I don’t understand how people found a way to give them the benefit of the doubt and let them prove it on the field but are so up-in-arms about Daboll that they’re on the verge of not watching them next year or not buying any more tickets. I’m not pointing to you specifically Buck – but I’ve heard a number of people throw up their virtual-arms and say “I’m done” over this. It just doesn’t make sense to me that this was really the “freak out” point.
Ochophosphate - February 6, 2012
We all assumed Haley was gonna run the offense, not Muir.
Daboll’s gonna have the whole ball o’ wax in his own hands. It’s something to be nervous about.
On the other hand, I don’t know of any other potential OC’s that would have been slam dunks, so I don’t really get the complaining over Daboll.
Brsrkr - February 6, 2012
Fair criticism of the Muir situation
And the waters were muddied further with Zorn in the mix.
Ochophosphate - February 6, 2012
Fair enough
your points are valid. I’m simply suffering from a high degree of skepticism here on a sports blog.
As for Muir, I pretty much did freak. :) But to your point, I don’t recall nearly this much reaction from it either.
Buck'O - February 6, 2012
if the organization really cares about fan approval right now
than cassel won’t be our starting QB next year
Leaf - February 6, 2012
Bingo.
The guy had a less than stellar record in Cleveland. Okay, I don’t remember anyone in the past several years that has made the Browns an offensive juggernaut. Miami actually had a pretty good offense the last half of last season. That was with a QB equivelant (or worse) than Cassel.
Until Romeo shows that he is dishonest, I take him at his word. I think Daboll will be just fine.

AnkenyChiefsFan - February 6, 2012
Why leave out the best QB on the roster?
If he improved Moore, he should be able to improve Cassel
PVChiefsfan - February 6, 2012
Those teams wanted him as a position coach I'm betting
still I like the hire. I feel like some people will be surprised at how he gets our offense going
IPWT2009 - February 6, 2012
I'm optomistic
I hope he does well. With Haley and Muir gone there really isn’t anything left to get in his way. So he’ll either soar or sink, but at least we know its all him.
Tyran - February 6, 2012
I am actually encouraged...
miami’s offense was as anemic as ours for the first 8 games of the season. Then they fired the HC and suddenly they had really good Offense. Making me believe it was the HC and not Daboll who was the problem. He got Bush to play exactly to his talents and is the only OC to get him to perform at that high a level in his career. Which is exactly how we should be using Charles and McCluster. Swing outs and getting them to the edge with good blocking schemes. Not to mention Moore actually started to play pretty well there at the end. And whether he is the starter next year or not Cassel is better than Moore by a good margin. So I am cautiously optimistic after some thought and looking at some of the stuff from the end of last year.
fixitquick79 - February 6, 2012

Answer to the 1st question – eating a lot of pizza
I kid, I kid – he did drop a lot of LBs while in Miami.
Ochophosphate - February 6, 2012
Jets hired the Miami HC to be OC, I guess they ranked him ahead of Daboll
Chiefs_KC - February 6, 2012
They also hired Hackett and Shotty Jr.
Their track record isn’t the best.
Tarkus - February 6, 2012
At all the people saying
“All those teams wanted him as a positions coach”
Why would they even offer him that? He was an OC for Miami and everyone liked him. Get real people.
Brad-KC - February 6, 2012
Why not?
Todd Haley was a HC who just went to the playoffs 2 years ago….he is jobless
Raheem Morris was just HC and now he is DB coach.
It doesn’t matter who you are in the NFL….you are not entitled to anything.
Daboll is lucky to be given an OC job again. He failed in Cleveland and did ok in Miami. He isn’t entitled to anything!
Matt_Grbac - February 6, 2012 via mobile
All I can say is that
the one local Miami fan (I know exactly two) I talked to said they would keep Daboll and give us Ken O’Keefe in a heartbeat. I agree. O’Keefe drove me nuts for years.
neiowakcfan - February 6, 2012
daboll is a guy who has got the most out of mediocre qb's, and in some cases, flat out poor qb's like derek anderson.
so if the team ends up stuck with some sort of cassel/orton situation, or cassel/stanzi dogfight, maybe he is the best option available after all to get the most out of cassel or orton.
lets hope so. hes young too, lot of room to improve, lot of talent to use to do so.
ill give the guy a chance. why not? don’t really have a choice anyway
SDChief - February 6, 2012

sm7600 - February 6, 2012
when we had saunders as OC
we didn’t have RAC as the HC or DC
TDubb - February 6, 2012
When we had Saunders as OC
We had the greatest offensive line in the history of the game.
Outside of when he’s had phenomenal talent to work with, Saunders hasn’t done a whole lot.
MNchiefsfan - February 6, 2012
track the career of Al Saunders after he left here.
He hasn’t been given much of a chance. He’s at a place a year or two and then there’s massive turnover with the staff and he isn’t retained.
However, there is evidence that his offense can be potent with players who are experienced in it. Jason Campbell went down in Washington, and Todd Collins (remember him?) stepped in and performed quite well.
bamachief5558 - February 6, 2012
Ha! Todd Collins... Good times...

sm7600 - February 6, 2012
Five Year Plans
For the last 40+ years we’ve seen rebuilding plan after rebuilding plan and none of them has produced a Super Bowl appearance, much less a win. For the last 18 years we haven’t even seen a playoff win. Considering that the GM of the latest rebuilding plan just fired the guy he wanted to lead that effort, I think skepticism on the part of the fantasy is understandable.
UCrawford - February 6, 2012
if not rational
sm7600 - February 6, 2012
skepticism is understandable
but that’s a choice between optimism and pessimism.
Look, the current administration, no matter what you think of them, isn’t trying to repeat the twenty years under Peterson, or the twenty before that.
Crucifying the OC and the OC hire before he has settled into his desk is a bit much. Pioli has been here three years and no Super Bowl berth means he sucks? Okay, fine. The Haley hire and rotating OC’s hasn’t been too great for Cassel and the offense. This hire, Daboll, may finally produce some stability.
With the weapons he has, and if the injured players return and play well, I don’t see how the offense does not improve. If he can develop Stanzi and give us a look at what else we’ve got on the roster, bonus. If Cassel plays well and improves over his “Pro Bowl” year, double bonus.
If KC brings in another QB to improve the position, triple win win win bonus.
neiowakcfan - February 6, 2012
well, to track your own post
if we’re getting a new system, and by all accounts, we are, that’s a learning curve right there that probably suggests it won’t work altogether well this year, and will take about a year to be fully installed for it to be successful. Which means 2012 is another wasted year.
You leave out the constant in this whole mess…the Hunt family. Who for better or worse have tossed loyalty to GMs who made money for the team (Steadman and Peterson) over actual performance and championships. that HASN’T changed.
sm7600 - February 6, 2012
The 49ers did okay with a new system.
Tarkus - February 6, 2012

KC plays in the AFC West
The division is up for grabs. You get, presumably, an entire and intact pre-season. You have an entire season to get it together. Heck, nine wins and you may win the division and go to the playoffs. Once you’re in, anything can happen. The Giants went 9-7 and won the Super Bowl. The Denver Broncos won a playoff game with Tim Freaking Tebow.
I don’t think hiring Daboll is leading to a wasted year.
neiowakcfan - February 6, 2012
yeah, and 13-3 can get you bumped in the first round
three different times. At home.
Whereas, if you’re 9-7 or close to it, you pretty much get beat up by the opposing team too, as we have a couple of times.

Chiefs_KC - February 6, 2012
Maybe it's just me, but I would think this would have been a question asked to Daboll during the interview process...
Otherwise it seems dysfunctional to me that you’d hire an OC and not discuss who else would round out the staff and whether they can co-exist, same O-line blocking schemes, etc
Chiefs_KC - February 6, 2012
Perhaps, but the interview
is for OC, not position coaches. Naming a few potentials or types may have come up, but until you can go out and get some people (by asking permission) it’s just theoreticals. You can look at his previous hires (if he had any) and get an idea.
If Daboll is involved in getting his position coaches, he most certainly wouldn’t hire guys he doesn’t think fit his scheme(s).

It was called The Last Dragon.. Apparently they are remaking it with Samuel L Jackson as Sho’nuff. This from Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Dragon

I always remember it as
Berry Gordy’s The Last Dragon
At least that’s how it always appeared on HBO or wherever the hell I subjected myself to it.
Good luck… it will kick the shit out of Sex and the City 2.

Yea right
There was other teams stupid enough to want a 22nd ranked offense at best. Pioli and company tells us this because nobody want to come here due to the issues in the front office. I’ve spent my last 30 years footbal sundays on the Chiefs and they have never even tried. I dont know why I waste my time.
P.S. I will still be stoked for our first game next season.

And people are acting like Crennel wasn’t told to say that for PR purposes?
You’re hilarious, AP.
