One of the reasons I thought the
Kansas City Chiefs hired Brian Daboll as offensive coordinator was because he ran an offense similar to the one in which
Matt Cassel has had his most success. Maybe that played a role in the hire but it wasn't the overwhelming reason why Daboll was hired, Romeo Crennel said on Tuesday.
"It's more about Brian than it is Matt Cassel," Crennel said on a conference call with KC reporters this morning.
Crennel said Daboll was the first person he offered the coordinator job to and that the search took so long because Daboll was under contract with the
Miami Dolphins. He also indicated that the Dolphins wanted to keep him and other teams were interested in him as well.
As for the the offense he'll run, Crennel said when you compare it to KC's offense last year or New England or Miami, it's more like the Dolphins. "You can see some no huddle, you can see some multiple tight ends, you can see some two back, some one back, so we can see it all," Crennel said. He also mentioned having balance in the offense as far as the running and passing game is concerned.
We'll have some more details on what he said about the staff (right after I eat at this Chinese buffet for lunch...yeah, we're a real professional operation around here). Check our Twitter feed --
@ArrowheadPride -- for a few more details, including Crennel's expectation that Jim Zorn will remain with the staff.
Growing more fond of this hire
I like Daboll’s history with lesser talent. Getting more excited for the offense thinking about it

Daboll asked about the chiefs offense: "the first word i want to use is attack."

Potential HC after Crennel retires?
Could probably think of more. Not saying any of the above happened, but they’re possibilities.

Dabolls record as OC? In three years he went 13-32 for a .333 win percentage. If ya’ll thought Haley’s .427 was bad, what’re ya gonna do with daboll?
Aiken_Drum - February 8, 2012
**should be 16-32**
Aiken_Drum - February 8, 2012
He's the oc
Not the HC. Why wool I look at the records of his teams. Look at Al Saunders “record” since he left kc. The rams, skins, and raiders didn’t win a lot with al coaching.
Tripower66 - February 8, 2012 via mobile
I guess that's why you wanted him back so badly???

Not the fans...the article said the management wanted him.

Doesn’t seem to be a stretch that they reached out to him afterward, once they got their new HC in place.
But I guess we can always assume everyone is lying, unless they’re saying something bad about Pioli… right?

shaytron - February 7, 2012
exactly
I don’t see how Jeremy thinks Pioli made Haley look like a lunatic…unless he really thinks the phones were bugged.
Brad-KC - February 7, 2012
I dont think Pioli made Haley a lunatic, i think that the hatred between them made haley to look like a lunatic.
Haley and Pioli were at each others throats day one when Haley realized he couldn’t win with Cassel. The easy schedule made them tolerate each other and then when our top players went down and Pioli did nothing to help. Thats when Haley did what he thought he had to " hit them where it hurts" at started Palko damn well knowing this was the end. I give him credit for standing up for himself.
Jeremy Daniel - February 7, 2012
So you think Haley stuck with Palko
to stick it to Pioli?

then Haley is a complete asshole. Because that would mean he was also sticking it to the entire organization, including the coaching staff, all the players and the fan base. I would hope that he’s more of a professional than that.
Tarkus - February 7, 2012
If that was the case
Haley would have obviously lost his team completely. Do you really think the players are going to let that slide and not say anything about it? Do you really think Bowe and others are still going to have that much respect for him?

Just saw Arrowhead Pride's twitter referencing their poll that only 19% of the fans approve the Daboll hire....
I think they need to stop using that as a stat. The poll just isn’t properly put together.
If I were to put a poll up that asked if people think spotted dick tastes good or not… the vast majority would vote no without any further knowledge of the food. In reality, it’s a tasty British steamed suet pudding containing dried fruit (usually currants) commonly served with custard.
So… with the lack of knowledge people just make snap decisions. I have no way of knowing if if someone educated on the Daboll hire would change their opinion, but I find it hard to believe it’d be so lopsided.
Brad-KC - February 7, 2012

The Shoebill, Balaeniceps rex also known as Whalehead is a very large bird related to the storks. It derives its name from its massive shoe-shaped bill.
The Shoebill is a very large bird, averaging 1.2 m (4 ft) tall, 5.6 kg (12.3 lbs) and 2.33 m (7.7 ft) across the wings. The adult is mainly grey, the juveniles are browner. It lives in tropical east Africa, in large swamps from Sudan to Zambia.

The fact that all of his offenses (minus about 6 games) have been among the worst in the league is very concerning.
Nick Britt - February 7, 2012
You could make a strong argument that even despite injuries we were working with more talent then Daboll ever had in Cleveland
And look where we stood last year?
GenericBrand - February 7, 2012
That's a good post. +1
I disagree because of player personnel on the offensive side of the ball in Cleveland and the fact that it was his first few years as a 34/35 year old OC. But this is at least a good argument.
Brad-KC - February 7, 2012
Wrong!
Daboll is a great hire, and go MIZZOU!
neiowakcfan - February 7, 2012
Cassel can make the best OCs look like Bill Muir
ArrowDread - February 7, 2012
Truth
RememberDelaney37 - February 7, 2012 via mobile
@SI_JimTrotter
I also think Romeo Crennel’s hiring of Brian Daboll as offensive coordinator was smart and solid. Now find a QB. #chiefs
Chief Willie Wildcat - February 7, 2012
Trotter speaks the truth.
Tarkus - February 7, 2012
Sign Peyton Manning and the OC won't matter
Nick Britt - February 7, 2012
Also from @SI_JimTrotter
“Had a good talk w/ Dwayne Bowe other night. Said he likes Haley and spoke to him recently. Said they had issues his 1st year, but not since.”
So let the Bowe to Steelers banter begin.
Chief Willie Wildcat - February 7, 2012
yea , that would suck on SO many levels..
chiefsman! - February 7, 2012
Man I'd drink myself into (more of) a stupor (than usual).
TRSChief - February 7, 2012
Wallace on one side and Bowe on the other?
With Rapingbugers throwing the ball? That would be pretty potent.
GenericBrand - February 7, 2012
Don't forget
Antonio Brown
GaryfromIA - February 7, 2012
Do we get
Antonio Brown in consolation?
ExRoyalsFan - February 7, 2012
@SI_JimTrotter again...
“Last thought on KC: I believe Bowe wants to stay with the Chiefs longterm, but the contract has to be right.”
Chief Willie Wildcat - February 7, 2012
They've got way too many holes
To drop big money on a WR. But who knows?
MNchiefsfan - February 7, 2012
I don't see it.
Tarkus - February 7, 2012
Funny quote from Rotoworld
GenericBrand - February 7, 2012
More crap from people looking for big names
We don’t need a big name made from riding the coattails of a superstar player. We need someone making their name from making chicken salad from chicken shit
RememberDelaney37 - February 7, 2012 via mobile
For some reason, the Pats are still the Evil Empire in the minds of many
Sudden - February 7, 2012
I agree...
but, adding the big name players couldn’t hurt either.
Face Painter - February 7, 2012
What exactly is funny about that quote?
Chiefs_swagger - February 7, 2012
i think it is a bit more sense if you add what they said before that
Talking about how crennel wants the type of offense ran in miami in 2011 , which sets the bar low because they were 22nd in the league and only averaged like 318 yards a game or so .
chiefsman! - February 7, 2012
matt cassel is OK
but no OK QB went to the super bowl this year…
chiefsman! - February 7, 2012
Do you have a link?!

chiefsman! - February 7, 2012
That OK QB
would have been in the super bowl if evans didn’t blatantly drop a touchdown pass inside a minute.
ExRoyalsFan - February 7, 2012
Alex Smith and Joe Flacco came very close.
Tarkus - February 7, 2012
yes
but i want to go to super bowl , not just be close. Even though i would love to be close also ! And i would probably put flacco ahead of cassel ..
chiefsman! - February 7, 2012
Probably???????
saskwatch - February 7, 2012
Like him or not
Approve of the hire or not
Daboll is our OC…so get used to it.
I don’t wanna hear your Daboll crap!

Put a title on the comment please.
I want to remove pictures I don’t want to look at. Thank you.
Chiefs_swagger - February 7, 2012
Not sure why people think
a 36 year old with 3 years of OC experience can be a retread of anything.
Brad-KC - February 7, 2012
But the 65 year old guy they wanted is not.
Tarkus - February 7, 2012
agreed.
Brad-KC - February 7, 2012
Crennel should be considered one
Brad-KC - February 7, 2012
But he's ours now.
Tarkus - February 7, 2012
agreed again
So we have 1 retread…which isn’t something people should freak out about
Brad-KC - February 7, 2012
Hmm....
Considering this phrase could almost be exactly applied to Peyton Manning, I find this highly ironic.
Sudden - February 7, 2012
I guess I don't follow = /
Brad-KC - February 7, 2012
Peyton is 36 years old
and considering Jim Caldwell coached that team for the last three years, you could argue that Peyton was the de facto coach.
Sudden - February 7, 2012
ahh
Brad-KC - February 7, 2012
Better than Bill Muir
That’s all I can say….MUCH better than Bill Muir.

at least he'll stay awake
chiefsman! - February 7, 2012
That's because he's da Red Bull.
Tarkus - February 7, 2012
Yep
And from what I understand he is very excitable and energetic.
When is the last time our OC wasn’t either falling alseep or driving a scooter around the complex.

I'm willing to bet Daboll thinks he can fix Cassel
Just like Weis “did”. Please, please prove me wrong. I’m begging this organization to convince me that Cassel won’t be the quarterback until Pioli gets fired.
old_school - February 7, 2012
He's got you right where he wants you
ExRoyalsFan - February 7, 2012
I'm not sure there's going to be enough crow to go around if Cassel goes out and throws for 4000+ yards and 30+ TDs this year
The whole species might actually go extinct.
GenericBrand - February 7, 2012
I actually expect it
Cassel looks like one QB in even years and a completely different QB in odd years. It’s an even year, but the playoffs will occur in an odd year (woe be upon us). What we need is for the team to carry a horrible QB to the playoffs in the 2013 season, and then Cassel will magically transform into the ghost of Johnny U and put up the greatest postseason in the annuls of NFL lore.
Sudden - February 7, 2012
This is hilarious, and true
I love it
Ochophosphate - February 7, 2012
As the world ends in December 2012
No worries about poor play on 2013.
ExRoyalsFan - February 7, 2012
I wish he would, seriously
but he won’t. That’s the problem here. Too much hope when we’ve been proven wrong long enough.
old_school - February 7, 2012
Good Cassel years: 2008, 2010
Bad Cassel years: 2007, 2009
He had a statistically solid year in 2010, but once January 2011 rolled around, he shat the bed against Oakland and Baltimore.
Sudden - February 7, 2012
Correction
bad years are 2009 and 2011…. although 2007 might be bad since he never saw the field. (I’ll give him a pass for not beating out a QB who threw for 50 TDs and won 18 games though)
Sudden - February 7, 2012
Hmm... the good Cassel years in 2008 and 2010 coincide with facing two of the weakest opponent schedules of the past 20 years
No surprise there Cassel looks like an NFL QB against weak opponents. It’s the average and better opponents where he looks like he never played QB in college…. wait a minute
Chiefs_KC - February 7, 2012
If Cassel read the posts on AP of what most of us think about him....
tomachop - February 7, 2012
Good thing
It’ll never happen
RamX21 - February 7, 2012
If that happens
I will write MULTIPLE 2000 word posts apologizing to Matt Cassel, Aiken, and anyone else who still thinks Cassel’s got what it taks.
MNchiefsfan - February 7, 2012
Not to mention
Lucifer looking for some new digs thanks to the frostbite….
AnkenyChiefsFan - February 7, 2012
Why can't we just agree that there probably wasn't any candidate
that wouldn’t spark this type of AP reaction. If it was Saunders, many would have loved it while people like me would have been bemoaning the double-dip on Senior Citizens.
Short of Don Coryell or someone of that nature, we will never agree.. Let’s just enjoy the hire and starting firing the missiles at each other if it doesn’t work out.
Now that I think of it though, Coryell would require passing and everyone would get mad cause we have Matt Cassell. Scatch him.
Carry on, don’t mind me, just no new RG III scenario today and I’ll be set.
Steve_in_RI - February 7, 2012
Trade Bowe and This/Next years 1st round draft picks
Boom: RG3
Brad-KC - February 7, 2012
That was very rude.
Chiefs_swagger - February 7, 2012
Well played
Since that has been said before, I will not count that as a new one.
Steve_in_RI - February 7, 2012
How about
Our 1st and 3rd for 2012, 2013, and 2014 drafts
Brad-KC - February 7, 2012
How about
We see what Daboll can do for out offense….THEN start throwing stones. Now hear me out, I know this is a new and scary idea.
If we let Daboll either hang himself or rise from the ashes like super hero then we can form opinions and criticisms.
I know this may be an idea that will get me banned from AP or the internets all together….but it has legs and it could work.
Matt_Grbac - February 7, 2012 via mobile
I love it!
Funny how that hasn’t occurred to the pitchfork and torch crowd.

Steve_in_RI - February 7, 2012

neiowakcfan - February 7, 2012
That's not the modus operandi of AP these days
Anymore, it’s about which clique you belong to and how many insults you can hurl at anonymous posters you will never actually get to know in person.
I will say that Daboll’s track record is far less impressive than when we hired Weis as OC. I’m looking forward to ANY change in offense compared to what we saw this year, but I’m not holding my breath that we’ll see as much efficiency as we did under Weis.
Chiefs4Life - February 7, 2012

So this will be
Cassel’s…well, the Chiefs 4th year in a row with a different OC. I just hope this guy works out and we can have some consistency.
As said above, someone liked Weis’ credentials more than Dabolls… but what does it matter if the guy leaves after 1 year. YA know?
Brad-KC - February 7, 2012
I think that's ovverrated. Look at what Cam Newton and Andy Dalton did without meeting the OC until September
Good QBs don’t make and don’t need excuses
Chiefs_KC - February 7, 2012
Very true.
Mr.Pibbs - February 7, 2012
well we don't have a good QB
So a new scheme every year is more difficult for a guy without the skills to just go out and play.
Brad-KC - February 7, 2012
Good God...
Can’t wait for the Chiefs to annihilate teams this year so people will STFU about the Haley/Pioli/Daboll/RAC nonsense. This is going to be an incredibly long offseason.
Tomahawk29 - February 7, 2012
So when Daboll and RAC disagree, will it be
“Daboll Trouble”??
