Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel told reporters that it will be similar to what the
Miami Dolphins ran last season now that they've hired Brian Daboll from the Dolphins as offensive coordinator. Daboll was asked in a conference call about what the 2012 Chiefs offense will look like and he kicked things off by using the word "attack".

"The first word I would like to use is attack," Daboll said. "When you're an offensive football coach, you really want to set precedent on a defense and attack a defense. That changes week to week based on things you may get but you have a set package as an offensive system where there's a thousand plays but you pick and choose on a weekly deal what you're getting defensively.
"I think it's important to be balanced to help the quarterback out in the run and the pass. Utilize different personnel groups, different formations. Sometimes we'll move in shifts, sometimes we'll be stationary. I think you have to have the ability to have an up tempo scheme where you have a no-huddle package. Threatening runs, passes and all those different things, you have to keep the defense as off balance as you can."
Both Crennel and Daboll mentioned having a balanced offense, the various formations and groupings and the no-huddle. It's the last one that has me excited -- the no-huddle. I've always felt
Matt Cassel operates better in that environment than he does at other times.
Early thoughts on how the Chiefs new OC describes the offense? Everything always sounds better on paper so I'm already anxious to see these guys get out there.
I like the agressive mindset
Hope he can make an offensive scheme not as predictable as the Chiefs offense from 2006 to 2011. I still don’t think that Cassel is a franchise QB but he should be better next season
Ulises Harada - February 7, 2012
Game 1 this year was brutal...
How many times did we go 1st down incompletion – 2nd down draw for 3 yards – 3rd down incompletion? That was a horrendous game to watch. It was the only game I went to see, and I was just sick after that….
AnkenyChiefsFan - February 7, 2012
the more I get to know about Daboll the better I like this hire...
Especially after hearing him talk about attacking a defense… damn isn’t it about damn time we had an OC think this way!?
CurtMerzFan - February 7, 2012
Wow
You’re easy. He’s a guy with a turd for a resume. He should prove he’s worth a damn instead of talk about it.
Buck'O - February 7, 2012
He was on turds for teams.
I mean literally the Browns.
And last year in Miami once they snapped the losing streak the offense looked just fine. Reggie Bush averaged 5 YPC as a regular old between the tackles running back. What do you think Jamaal Charles could do?
What does this comment even mean? How is he supposed prove he’s worth a damn? You just want him to be silent and refuse to speak to the media until out offense is lighting up scoreboards?
The guy is a young coach, give him a chance. What the hell do you know about him? Nothing.
bamachief5558 - February 7, 2012
He should prove it
But he can’t do that in February. So let’s stop bashing him and wait until we see the offense.
Tripower66 - February 7, 2012 via mobile
Agreed
Really a vanilla statement by Daboll, but what else can he say. I agree with Tripower, that the jury is out until there are a couple of games under his belt. It is easy to see the frustration of Chief fans with another ex-Patriot hire, but in the football world there are also lots of inter-connections. And if BD turns out to be a great OC, who cares where he came from so long as he is here.
Osage4 - February 8, 2012
Really?
Daboll’s highest rated offense in his career finished 22nd in the league. Really? If this guy likes Cassell already, there’s no way Orton will resign in KC. Romeo gets a one year pass just because, but if we suck in 2012 (and if we have Cassell starting, we most certainly will). So, if we suck again in 2013, Clark will clean house and they’ll all be gone, including Pioli. I was hoping for Al Saunders to return the offense to the excitement of the Vermeil era, but that was just a dream.
mrdenver1 - February 8, 2012
Al sure has brought that excitement
To the teams he’s coached since( Rams, skins, raiders).
Tripower66 - February 8, 2012 via mobile
I said it on Twitter.
Can’t attack if your qb can’t throw.
bossmanham - February 7, 2012 via mobile
Cassel has done well in hurry up mode.
As Joel pointed out above. Of course, it would be best if Cassel is not starting, but even if he is, there are still some things Daboll can do to help him out.
Tarkus - February 7, 2012
agreed
stagdsp - February 7, 2012
help him pack?
tomachop - February 7, 2012
Touche.
Tarkus - February 7, 2012
Cassel does well in situations where he doesn't have to think, just react
Fozzyboyd - February 7, 2012
The thing he does best is hold a clipboard.
Mr.Pibbs - February 7, 2012
other than the deep ball, cassel can throw just fine.
shaytron - February 7, 2012
as long as he has 5 seconds and a clean pocket he's fine
anything less & he’s a mess
jmcgoblue - February 7, 2012
he doesn't need 5 seconds
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAMwxwd5I-U
he does have a relatively clean pocket for a lot of these, but even when he doesn’t he gets the ball of pretty quickly. i’m not saying he’ll carry the team on his back, but with a good offensive gameplan he is fully capable of executing efficiently. of all the things you can say to knock cassel, throwing the ball with some zip just isn’t really one of them.
shaytron - February 7, 2012
oh he can zip it..
just 3 feet behind the WR and at his knees.
Brad-KC - February 7, 2012
watch the video
that season, i remember him having no problem consistently hitting bowe in stride or between defenders.
shaytron - February 7, 2012
it's a tough sell...
getting people to remember the good plays Cassel has made.
but, there have been plenty
stagdsp - February 7, 2012
Every time a QB makes a play
you hear “Cassel couldn’t have done that.” You’d think he never made a good pass in his life.
Tarkus - February 7, 2012
yep
typical over-reaction and generalization on the negative side
like “Cassel can’t throw it deep”
or “Thomas Jones was useless”
or “Mike Vrabel was a waste”
or “Dex can’t break a tackle”
I could go on :)
stagdsp - February 7, 2012
If you make another over-reaction like that you are an idiot!
:)
nateforchiefs - February 7, 2012
well played, sir :)
stagdsp - February 7, 2012
If he gets it between the corner and safety on a consistant basis
like when he hit Bowe in the Vikings game, people would start remembering the good passes and forget about the bad ones like when he threw the ball to Weddle
KingChief - February 7, 2012
you guys act like he's amazing because he's hit guys in stride a few times.
It should be like that almost every time. It’s ok to accept mediocrity but don’t try and make it out better than it is.
Brad-KC - February 7, 2012
No one used the word "amazing"
For crying out loud…comments like that are exactly what they’re talking about.
cheapham - February 7, 2012
Thank you.
Tarkus - February 7, 2012
oh give me a break.
Amazing wasn’t necessary, i’ll give you that. But you can’t justify the play of Matt Cassel. You can’t try and bring down the people pointing out his constant bad plays by pointing out a handful of decent ones.
This is what Matt Cassel can do. They draw up a play. If his 1st target is wide open, he can step and put it on the guy. He stares him down the entire time and connects. If not? He’ll check down to a TE or throw it out of bounds. There’s rarely anything in between.
Brad-KC - February 7, 2012
*he can step up
Brad-KC - February 7, 2012
What if the TE was the 2nd target? Is he then successfully moving through his progressions?
PVChiefsfan - February 7, 2012
To make it simple
1st target to last target.
Brad-KC - February 7, 2012
To be fair
I’m no Cassel supporter, and never have been, but how do you know what is going through his head?
I agree he has trouble reading processing the necessary information on the field, but what you are doing is providing detailed accounts of what goes through this guy’s mind on any given play.
It’s incredible really.
bamachief5558 - February 7, 2012
Also,
We’ve seen 3 years of Matt Cassel’s play…it’s not like the people that are against him are making snap decisions and overreacting like in the case of Daboll who hasn’t coached a snap for the Chiefs.
Brad-KC - February 7, 2012
Nobody here is saying they want him as the starter.
All we’re saying is that people way overblow his deficiencies here. People can knock him without resorting to such extreme hyperbole.
Tarkus - February 7, 2012
In the case of Matt Cassel
I disagree. That’s all I really have to say about it.
Brad-KC - February 7, 2012
right
I’d be HAPPY with a starter who is CLEARLY better than Cassel…
Orton was on the verge of proving he was better… but kinda fizzled.
There aren’t any FA or Draft QBs that would be CLEARLY better… other than the 3 LONG shots (Manning, Luck, RG3)
So, bottom line, the Chiefs likely have to decide on Cassel or Orton, and build an offense that works with them.
it CAN be done, and the Chiefs CAN win a playoff game or 3 with either guy, with the right scheme/players around them
stagdsp - February 7, 2012
of course, they COULD go all-in on one of the long shots
and be among the favorites to win the AFC next year
but, I doubt that happens
stagdsp - February 7, 2012
The only way I see them taking a risk on Manning
is if they think Stanzi has a good shot of being a starting caliber QB by 2014
PVChiefsfan - February 7, 2012
That'd be awesome
Pay Manning what you would for a QB and a QB coach, Stanzi learns from the best.
Brad-KC - February 7, 2012
If the Broncos can win a playoff game with a FB as a starting QB
The Chiefs can win with an actual QB
nateforchiefs - February 7, 2012
Give Tebow some credit
He’s at least a half-back
Brad-KC - February 7, 2012
no, he's Alstott for sure
tomachop - February 7, 2012
Can you hook me up with whatever your on
Chiefs win a playoff game or 3? Yea right.
mu-chief-stl.cards fan - February 7, 2012
exactly
shaytron - February 7, 2012
You mean the throw that he drastically underthrew but Bowe still somehow made it to the endzone?
Or the seam throw they showed twice in three plays. Or the other seam throw he threw when the broncos were ahead by 20 points and could care less.
A lot of the throws were short and were plays Bowe made (which makes sense it is a vid about bowe). There were 2 impressive throws that entire video and the last flea flicker showed he can air it out and throw it deep. His arm strength isn’t THAT bad. It’s just a little bit below average. My only problem with Cassel is he can not handle pressure. Like at all. He never looks comfortable in the pocket and if there is a guy in his face 90% of the time he freaks out and his throw is bad. Some of that is the line but most of it is the QB, other QBs looked better with the same line.
Not saying he can’t succeed with a new O Coord, lets just hold off on making excuses for his weaknesses. He has below average arm strength and can not handle pressure. It is what it is.
Lucasjr5 - February 7, 2012
Did Cassel's arms fall off recently?
Tomahawk29 - February 7, 2012
no, noodles bend but rarely break
tomachop - February 7, 2012
What is your name on twitter?
I will follow you.
chiefsfan62 - February 7, 2012 via mobile
I just hope he realizes
that Dex doesn’t have the same skill set as Battle. That you don’t run your speedy backs up the middle and your pounders to the outside. That would be an immediate improvement.
Tarkus - February 7, 2012
seems basic, but yes that'd be a good start
Also, it’d be nice if he knows:
stagdsp - February 7, 2012
Those ideas are just crazy enough to work.
Tarkus - February 7, 2012
I'd like to add
SCREENS – like, use them, and not stupid WR bubble screens 80%+ of the time.
I swear we haven’t had a legit screen game since the days of Priest and Trent.
Ochophosphate - February 7, 2012
You mean like what we saw against the Packers?
That was pretty sweet.
Tarkus - February 7, 2012
Orton? yesssssssssssssssssssssssssss!
please :-)
upamtn - February 7, 2012
orton helps with screens, play action, and generally anything on offense compared to matt...
SFLChief - February 7, 2012
well, and do we CARE that he can't play defense very well?
of course not!
upamtn - February 7, 2012
other than scoring TDs
Orton was ideal
stagdsp - February 7, 2012
he needs help
no one really helped him score touchdowns. like mclain dropping passes..
chiefsman! - February 7, 2012
I didn't see McClain drop that many passes
stagdsp - February 7, 2012
I only remember one drop. Granted it probably would've been a touchdown because he was matched up against a little DB.
But we ended up winning anyway, so whatever.
I’d really like to see some more screens, too. If you’re gonna have the smallest line in the league, you might as well utilize them.
Also, not just bubble screens or RB screens. Those TE screens and fullback screens really punished those weak Packers defenders, I’d like to see that more often.
NigerianNightmare - February 7, 2012
Wheel routes
If you want to get DMC “in space”, highly predictable screens may not be the best answer. Instead, send him on more wheel routes where he’s headed vertically up the field and catches it about 5 yards past the line of scrimmage. That puts him well within Cassel’s accurate range and uses his speed to his advantage.
Chiefs4Life - February 7, 2012
absolutely
that play vs SF was perfect
stagdsp - February 7, 2012
Yep, Cassel is the man.
Mr.Pibbs - February 7, 2012

antony555 - February 16, 2012

after hearing these guys talk and seeing what he did with the players he has had in the past, I will say i am a supporter of these guy
BuddyMcLoving - February 7, 2012
How about Trent Richardson
Instead of battle
antony555 - February 16, 2012
sounds good to me
hopefully, he can take what he’s learned (good and bad) and put this offense to use.
It’s really frustrating to have an offense FULL of talented players and have them not be able to put points on the board.
Don’t kid yourself, this offense has more potential playmakers than most in the league… they just haven’t been able to execute. (Charles, Bowe, Baldwin, McCluster, McClain, Breaston, Moeaki)
I also think there are several guys that have yet to be “used properly” (McClain, McCluster, Baldwin, Moeaki, Breaston)
If Daboll can get them there, we’ll all be his biggest fans.
stagdsp - February 7, 2012
I'll bet he's excited to have all those weapons.
Of course, a shiny new QB (or even a somewhat dull old one in Orton) would get him even more excited.
Tarkus - February 7, 2012
I thought Moeaki was used pretty damn well the season he played for us...
bamachief5558 - February 7, 2012
I think Cassel is at his best when the Chiefs are not throwing the ball.
saskwatch - February 7, 2012

no, seriously ... that we'd do whatever the defense gives us or allows us to do
Haley said that … same thing Daboll’s saying
upamtn - February 7, 2012
This season in Miami, Daboll showed the ability to effectively scheme and creative mismatches
Unfortunately for Haley, our offense tended to do a poor job of that during his tenure.
Just because they say the same thing, doesn’t mean they actually do the same thing.
cheapham - February 7, 2012
or Len Dawson...
or any OC ever or qb, or
tomachop - February 7, 2012

tomachop - February 7, 2012
I remember Al Saunders used the word "attacking" like 50 times in his first presser.
electriclight - February 7, 2012

Is your paper talking to you again Joel? Wait….since when do bloggers even use paper?
GenericBrand - February 7, 2012
Constantly.
Because most of us are full of shit.
TRSChief - February 7, 2012
But....
Remember, of course,, that when a defense is being built as the dominant part of a team, then keeping them from getting worn out late in games by using ball control offense is extremely important. I’m all for attacking, but the the offense has to have a really robust ball control game if they hope to beat the teams that have scary offenses that must be kept off the field as much as possible. As long as he can run a time-consuming offense, then its great to have a primarily attacking style the rest of the time.
Bilyous - February 7, 2012
If they can score points I don’t care how quickly they do it.
JComp11 - February 7, 2012
Yeah, it's the quick 3 and outs that kill the defense.
Tarkus - February 7, 2012
At this point
I dont think we can be picky. Rather a 1 yd td, or a 99 yd td, we need to SCORE SCORE SCORE!! We can take our foot off the gas in the end. Conservative playcalling turns into 3 & outs. With cassel at qb, there will be alot of 3 & outs..
chief913-816 - February 7, 2012 via mobile
It's so easy...
buy why wouldn’t we keep Orton instead of Cassel. I mean… you can easily tell Orton can move the ball and keep our D rested. His only probably was in the Red Zone, which seems to not be an issue with the last half of Miami’s season (with a back up QB).
Brad-KC - February 7, 2012
Well, he has to want to stay.
But other than that, yeah.
Tarkus - February 7, 2012
3rd Downs
If he can correct our horrendous 3rd and short conversion ratio then we might be able to sustain a competitve offense. Get a QB that is capable of going through progressions and we are a AFC Champion contending team.
cmac87 - February 7, 2012
Bah!
Just keep the third downs at 3rd and 7 or longer and we’re fine. We did lead the league in that area after all. It’s those stupid 3rd and short downs that killed us.
Zif - February 7, 2012
did'nt exactly come across as saying he'd love to stay
tomachop - February 7, 2012
Screw them both!
Let’s sign Manning, and actually score some points!
radtech04 - February 7, 2012
That's good to hear.
Let’s do something crazy… like use a balanced run/pass offense and attack a defense. What a novel idea.
Tomahawk29 - February 7, 2012
It's what gives us the best chance to win.
Chiefs447 - February 7, 2012

chief red foreman - February 7, 2012 via mobile
I like the theory - however communism looked great on paper too.
Cassel will be the wild card here.
I’m cautiously optimistic
Ren - February 7, 2012
Hopefully he can draw up something
that will give Cassel the full 12 seconds he needs to accurately throw the ball to someone besides his running back.
radtech04 - February 7, 2012
He just needs to call the perfect play against the D
like in Tecmo Bowl – when you get the turbo boost and can outrun everyone on the field, dragging them around behind you forever. You could do it in John Elway’s Quarterback too.
If we could do that, I think Cassel would have enough time to get the pass off.
Ochophosphate - February 7, 2012
the best techmo bowl play
run backwards for 5 seconds, then throw it deep

greatest game EVER! scared to say it but I used the raiders alot on it, bo jackson, willie gault on the run backwards 5 seconds then throw it deep.
its been a minute but I think I also used the giants alot also, dave meggett, LT, I gotta go see if I can find that game somewhere. What was that on the old nintendo?
kc-twitch - February 7, 2012
touche'
My only hope is that he did decent w/ a terrible Matt Moore.
cmac87 - February 7, 2012
instead of actually throwing the ball 20 yards downfield like a real qb
Daboll can devise hook and lateral schemes to get the ball downfield and keep the D honest,….. Cassel is a huge liability is what I’m getting at and we all know it, and it sucks
tomachop - February 7, 2012
Chiefs QB Woes.
The last time The Chiefs one a playoff game was with Montana. Let’s go get Peyton and draft some O-line help.
shinds - February 7, 2012
Question about the no-huddle in the pros
Can the QBs get any feedback from the coaches via the helmet radio if they don’t huddle? I ask because having an extra set of eyes and another 10 seconds to read a defense may help a QB in no-huddle situations.
Chiefs4Life - February 7, 2012
As far as I know or have read
It is only shut off at the 15 sec mark on the play clock.
KSU-Chief - February 7, 2012
I believe so, yeah.

I think Haith is overrated. Nothing about their offense is particularly innovative and I haven’t seen him make many adjustments in-game that any other coach couldn’t do.

the more daboll talks the more he grows on me
his cleveland and miami teams were shit. yes we have cassel at qb, but hes not much worse then any of the qb’s daboll’s worked with in miami & cleveland. He also has a better receiving & rb core here then on any of those teams his past. If we can get o-line on track through the draft or free agency, then we could see a top 16 offense 1st year, and improvement on that 2nd year (as i think his system might be a bit complicated, which is why it took miami so long to grasp it. could be wrong)

Maybe we should try something else? Just Sayin
ArrowheadHunter - February 7, 2012
