Good morning! Here is today's Kansas City Chiefs news. Enjoy!
Brian Daboll said the right things, leaned on his impressive set of influences, and introduced himself to Kansas City as an offensive coordinator who's confident and comfortable - and who might break from the pack and stay a while.
The Chiefs this week hired Daboll, who wasn't retained by Miami following the 2011 season, as their sixth coordinator in as many years. He spoke to reporters on a conference call Tuesday, saying that he would wait to make changes to the Chiefs' offense.
New Coordinator Daboll Wants Chiefs To Attack On Offense from KC Star
"We're going to wait and kind of evaluate and do a really thorough job of watching these guys and being in OTAs and being in the mini-camps and put together the best thing that we can put together collectively."
Daboll will make his own conclusion this spring regarding Cassel's ability to operate in an up-tempo attack. The two know each other from Daboll's time serving as a wide receivers coach during Cassel's first two seasons in New England.
Daboll Wants To Install Attacking, Up-Tempo Offence In KC from The Mothership

Q: How much input did Scott Pioli have on this hire and why did it seem to take so long to get this hire done?
CRENNEL: "Well you know Brian was under contract for a while and they've got some rules in the NFL that says when a guy is under contract, you have to wait until he is free or you have to wait until you are given permission and I think Miami wanted to try and keep Brian and they didn't want to let him go and so we had to wait to work through that process. In the meantime we did talk to other people about it, about the position, but when Brian became available and after talking with him we felt like he was the best for the Chief and I made the decision to hire the guy."
Q&A With Romeo Crennel from The Mothership
Q: In the last week, we've talked to a lot of people in Cleveland and Miami in the media that worked with you, and really high reviews from a lot of the local people. However, when you Google Brian Daboll, one of the first things that comes up is a Mike Silver article about harsh treatment of Colt McCoy. Can you maybe talk about your relationship with Colt and if the article was fair and if so, why there was that dynamic?
DABOLL: "The relationship with most of the players that I've coached, I have a very, very good relationship. Colt and I have a good relationship. It's not a bad relationship. I think there are certain times when you're a coach and sometimes emotion can get to you that maybe you step back and say, ‘Boy, I would rather have handled it that way rather than this way,' but I think the job as a coach is to tell the players what to do, show them how to do it and really not accept any excuses.
Q&A With Brian Daboll from The Mothership
"A have a lot of confidence in Matt Cassel. I've watched him on tape and I know the player," said Daboll according to the team's website.
These comments backup what I have thought. There may be some competition, but unless there is an unforeseen addition, Cassel is the player the Chiefs expected to be their starting quarterback in 2012.
Daboll Talks Up Matt Cassel from ESPN
The 36-year-old Daboll will replace the retired Bill Muir. He was offensive coordinator last year at Miami and ran the offense at Cleveland the two years before that.
Since Scott Pioli took over as general manager after the 2008 season, offensive coordinator in Kansas City has been one of the most insecure positions in the NFL. Chan Gailey was fired a few days before the 2009 season began and replaced by Todd Haley, who spent his first year as a head coach also running the offense.
Charlie Weis held the job the next season, resigned and was replaced for one year by Muir.

It's also beyond dispute that Haley is fiery. He has been caught on tape having sideline arguments with many former players, including Keyshawn Johnson, Terrell Owens, Kurt Warner, Anquan Boldin and Matt Cassel. He even had on-field disputes with former boss Bill Parcells. You might say he's a chip off the Parcells block.
And this is a bad thing?
I say not necessarily.
Erroneous Perceptions Dog Haley from The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Americus native Leonard Pope, who was an All-SEC tight end at the University of Georgia and now plays for the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL, is returning to his hometown to tour the city's newest point pride, Phoebe Sumter Hospital.
Orlando Lowry, 50, was tabbed as Park Tudor's football coach Tuesday. He played outside linebacker for the Colts from 1985-89 and also played for the Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots.
High School Football: Ex-Colt To Coach Park Tudor from The Indianapolis Star
Kansas City Chiefs, receiver Dwayne Bowe: He is one of the most interesting free agents in the division. Kansas City general manager Scott Pioli has a reputation for signing his top talent to long-term deals and the Chiefs have said Bowe is a priority. If he gets to free agency, there is a chance he'd get a monster deal elsewhere.

Uggh. I am up waaaay too early
but on topic, it looks like Daboll is saying what us fans want to here. He wants to attack. but what he wants to attack, thats another story.

I'm in a wait and see frame of mind, but I agree, what the hell else was he gonna say..
“You know, I’m trying to bring in a slow, plodding kind of offense”
“I’m hoping to see a lot of 3 and outs, really keep a defense on it’s heels”
“Sometimes, I’ll punt that shit on 1st down just to let them know it’s in my repertoire”
“I love draw plays”
severn58 - February 8, 2012
lulz
Sometimes, I’ll punt that shit on 1st down just to let them know it’s in my repertoireJKnox11 - February 8, 2012
I had to rec his comment for that statement.
km230015 - February 8, 2012
"You know, I refuse to allow audibles. Ever. If they (the defense) come out with matchups that will destroy the original play call, well an audible is just what they'd expect. Going on ahead with a bad call will really keep them off balance."
TRSChief - February 8, 2012
"I have a lot of confidence in Matt Cassel"
“A few words that come to mind when speaking of this fine member of the community are, spunk, desire, gumption, chutspah, hullabaloo, and callabaloo”. “I can think of no Quarterback with 2 arms and 2 legs that I would rather have guiding this spaceshuttle, plus, he’s been to the Pro Bowl, so there’s obviously that”.
severn58 - February 8, 2012
"You know, of all the quarterbacks the Kansas City Chiefs have ever had, I can honestly say without a doubt that Matt Cassel is one of them."
TRSChief - February 8, 2012
Mike martz!?
Dude I thought you “retired”
ExtraMetal - February 8, 2012 via Android app
Unlike Weis
who you know had a list of top things to attack: Gates, JackStack, Oklahoma Joe’s…
Chief Willie Wildcat - February 8, 2012
If he keeps Cassel
He wants to attack the flats and the anything within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage.
He also wants to attack the turf behind the line of scrimmage using Cassel’s face as the weapon, i.e., it getting planted there by defenders.
Last but not least, he will be attacking any hope we have to make it to the playoffs and/or Super Bowl.
Ochophosphate - February 8, 2012
The more I read about Daboll the more I think....
Deja-vu all over again.
Bunch of hype about someone making the Offense stellar.
THE_TRUTH - February 8, 2012 via mobile
You've seen hype?
All I see is meh. From day 1 this has been an underwhelming and unexciting hire of a guy with a crappy resume. We’ll see, but I don’t think hype is the right word for it.
bossmanham - February 8, 2012
Not siding with Daboll,
But you could say RAC’s HC resume is underwhelming also. If he think’s Cassel can do it then underwhelming and unexciting is dead on, but if he at least tries to get someone else ove Cassel ,then I’ll give him a chance.
dbakerku - February 8, 2012
Hey
Derek Anderson had ONE good year too…and apparently we’ve already seen #7’s. Yay.
SCKSChief - February 8, 2012
Not from the fans
But, the Chiefs is a different story.
THE_TRUTH - February 8, 2012
Heh, hype?
All I see is people ranting about how much they hate it, or at the very least aren’t necessarily happy about it.
Best I keep seeing from some people for the most part is more of a “well it may not be bad, maybe wait and see”.
Yup, ate up with the hype for sure.
TRSChief - February 8, 2012
yay

SCKSChief - February 8, 2012
Sounds like a quote from The Common Sense Coaching Script.
Got a sitting QB with a contract? “We believe in X, he’s got this strong quality and has shown an ability to do Y and Z, given what happens on the field. We’re interested in seeing how he’lll perform in the future.”
What will actually happen? Hang onto Orton (or if he jumps, bring in Henne or Campbell) and have a competition. Throw Stanzi into the mix. See who moves the football—gets it accurately and consistently in the hands of our best players.
If they think Matt’s the best, they’ll pick him. (I am aware that there may be an institutional bias toward that pick). But Daboll tried reeling in Orton last year—in fact, all but had him.
I don’t see this being a “shoo in” for Matt Cassel, although I do the deck stacked toward him.
go_saleaumua - February 8, 2012
You're correct
Tarkus was saying this yesterday. Cassel and Stanzi are the only QB’s under contract, so they’re not going to throw either under the bus. Orton is an unrestricted free agent. He’s going to follow the money, though it sounds like they’d really like to have him back.
Chief Willie Wildcat - February 8, 2012
I thought the way he talked about the offensive players was pretty interesting.
He gives very direct compliments to the obvious guys’ skills, and then by contrast talks about Cassel like a guy saying “she’s got a great personality.”
And then…
Brsrkr - February 8, 2012
*laughs*
Sort of like “You should date my buddy’s sister, she’s hilarious, you’ll have a great time.”
I really do wonder who our passer will be. The regime (I’m sure) would like to have Matt Cassel win, but really, if he’s no good now is the time to sit him down. He’s affordable and is coming off an injury, so he’s pretty easy to replace.
It’s unfair but in life like football, sometimes that’s how it is.
go_saleaumua - February 8, 2012
Attack..
Attack with cassel as QB?Yea, right. Might as well ask hunt to open up his wallet because hell hasnt froze over for either to happen
wolfpack0735 - February 8, 2012
I can just picture it right now, Cassel sets up to pass, feet dancing below him a mile a minute. He’s locked up to his receiver for the past 5 seconds, and he’s ready to strike. Cassel attacks the defense who has been waiting for him to throw to the man he’s been staring at for the past 5 seconds, and with all the up tempo power he can muster, Cassel launches the ball 15 yards, but unfortunately, the receiver is double teamed, and the ball lands at his feet about two yards short.
3rd down and 9 coming up.
Topchief1 - February 8, 2012
If his feet get set, the ball goes 30, 40 yards...and lands safely at the wideout's cleats, or three feet over his outstretches hands.
go_saleaumua - February 8, 2012
That's good. That would mean we're passing on second down.
Better than a draw to McCluster on 2nd and 9 for -4 yards.
TwelfthMan - February 8, 2012
Daboll has said all the right things
So did Obama in 2008.
SCKSChief - February 8, 2012
Commence Politial Fame War! Muwahahahaha....
They all say the right things, that’s coach-speak.
I’m waiting to see how the staff turns out. I feel that Daboll’s creative and has the right idea, but if he has a bunch of yellers or “scheme gurus” under him, well hell…the guys won’t develop and it won’t matter what he said in a presser. We’ll still suck on offense.
Good o-line and WR coaches, I want to see ‘em. And maybe even Carthon’s dismissal? Or reassignment to ass’t HC only?? I don’t know a single back who has gotten BETTER under Mo. They pass protect more effectively…and get yelled at for fumbling. Now that Charles’ knee is healing, I think a coach who can teach him to read his blocks and how to use running angles to his advantage will help…The guy can’t live on speed alone, anymore.
go_saleaumua - February 8, 2012
So did
Bush, Clinton, Bush Sr., Regan, etc.
I would imagine they all said all the right things they won. :)
km230015 - February 8, 2012
And none failed as epically
Problem is, Daboll was running in one of those Communist state “elections”. OMG! Fidel won, again, in a landslide!!!
SCKSChief - February 8, 2012
Coach speak,
The only one I heard truly say the right things is Hugh Jacksom, now look where he’s at. Too bad coaches can’t say what is real
dbakerku - February 8, 2012
Boooooo politics
boooooooooooooooooooo
ok I’m done. :D
Ochophosphate - February 8, 2012
LOL
“Boo” indeed!
SCKSChief - February 8, 2012
Really,
what new OC isn’t going to say the offense will attack?
“Well, I really believe we’ll be passive and let the defense dictate what we can’t do. Generally, sloth and apathy are the images I want our offense to conjure.”
NJ Chiefs Fan - February 8, 2012
"He's supposed to say how he'll use Peyton Manning in our offense though."
go_saleaumua - February 8, 2012
Not what you say, but what you do.
Anyone can talk the talk, but I will give him the benefit of the doubt until the 4th or 5th game. I sincerely hope that he can walk the walk.
TXChiefan - February 8, 2012
Pioli is a jerk.
Cassel sucks, so the team sucks.
Daboll is a horrible hire, no mater what he says.
Clark Hunt is cheap.
RAC is a yes man, obviously.
Nobody wants to come to Arrowhead.
We’ll never retain Bowe or Carr.
am I missing any?
fongKC - February 8, 2012
Only thing I can think is pointing out Payton Manning will not be a chief.
Topchief1 - February 8, 2012
Zoloft
Did you forget to take your pick me up pills? Such a downer man.
wren42 - February 8, 2012 via mobile
wren, it's all good. Fong is pointing out all of the downer comments folks post.
go_saleaumua - February 8, 2012
He's just rattling off the AP memes.
bossmanham - February 8, 2012
Or, pointing out how it's inevitable: Peyton Manning will be a Chief.
Also, Pioli is too cheap/too Patriot Way for Manning to be a Chief.
/the last one might actually be true, I dunno
go_saleaumua - February 8, 2012
Pioli only looks at former Patriots in FA, its the Patriot way
km230015 - February 8, 2012
Trade up for RGIII?
NJChieffan16 - February 8, 2012 via mobile
Missed one fong - Barry "come get my QB" Richardson will remain the starting RT
WorL4Chiefs - February 8, 2012
Keep polishing that turd Pioli, til it’s bright and shiny and still stinks to high heaven. I would bet a million dollars that the “competition” brought in to “compete” with Matt Cassel is someone like Matt Moore. A real JAG, just like Cassel is, so that he’s assured of the starting position. You would think that a real GM would want to have a good QB in place to allow his team to succeed, instead of keeping a pet project in, results be damned. But hey, what do I know? I was forced to close my blinds like everyone else.
Topchief1 - February 8, 2012
He said there would be competition at QB he didn't say it would be GOOD competition.
Helmets - February 8, 2012
There was competition last year
Palko and a rookie that couldn’t take time from Palko. Awesome.
SCKSChief - February 8, 2012
Haley refusing to play Stanzi
is not the same as him not being able to beat out Palko
KingChief - February 8, 2012
Haley spouting the company line
is not necessarily “Haley refusing to play Stanzi.”

Naw
Im letting it sit there to see how long it takes for one of the other 300 people in the building to notice it.
BDCinSA - February 8, 2012
I'm in hope
that Pioli does get on here or at least one of his staff. And maybe, just maybe he blows all of us away and goes for RGIII or Peyton. Then everyone will jump on the wagon and say, I predicted this back in February.
flip8744 - February 8, 2012 via mobile
Well you can wish in one hand
and shit in the other…
Speaking of “hope”…didn’t America bank on that a few years back?

It's never too early
We’re three years in! LOL
SCKSChief - February 8, 2012
And people act like it should only take 3 days to fix this bleeding mess that was inherited in 2008
RememberDelaney37 - February 8, 2012 via mobile
3 days is a bit short of a time frame
SCKSChief - February 8, 2012
Attack?
Sounds like we all know who the Quarterback will be.so much for all the competition,if this is the case, then we will be half ass at best.
chiefsfool - February 8, 2012
I expect a learning curve in the early part of the season
BUT…….with the talent on this team (assuming we DO resign Bowe) half ass is not acceptable at all. Im all for the benefit of the doubt and I have held off on judgment of this hire so far hoping this works out because this team is so damn ready for a break in thier favor its absurd. But if anyone who could call themselves an OC cannot at least do a decent job with all the talent KC has then screw it, I will start watching hockey (well, not really, more like I will be stuck with crap on Sundays for even more time to come and not able to do anything about it cause Im not going to stop being a chiefs fan. Sucks, Im a hostage of the Chiefs organization…I was born into it and its just how it is)
BDCinSA - February 8, 2012
Heres some good news!
It could be worse…….Imagine if we were all raider fans!!
milwaukeechief - February 8, 2012
"I want a big name for offensive coordinator! I want it I want it I want it!"
Didn’t we already try a coach that got his rep by lucking into a future HOF QB? How did that work out?
But lets keep head butting that same brick wall, maybe it will break this time
RememberDelaney37 - February 8, 2012 via mobile
...and settle for guys from losing franchises?
I get what you’re saying, but it doesn’t mean the pendulum has to swing in the completely opposite direction.
SCKSChief - February 8, 2012
I'm one of those in the "wait & see" mode.
Not sure anything can be discerned from what’s been said so far.
All I have left is my eternal fan hope that “someday”….
