Good morning! Here is your Kansas City Chiefs news. Another slow offseason day.
It's a shift in staff structure the team hasn't seen since Chan Gailey served as offensive coordinator in Herm Edwards' final season as head coach.
The change is both simple and efficient.
Daboll will not have any coaching responsibility other than being the team's offensive coordinator. It's essentially the same setup Crennel uses on the defense side of the football.
Crennel Changing Structure Of Chiefs Offensive Staff from The Mothership

Crennel has already indicated he'll serve a dual role as Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator. That means Daboll will be left alone to run the Chiefs offense. And based on his efforts in the second half of the season at Miami with modest talent, it's a safe bet to assume that KC's offense will improve next season.
And that's really all that matters going forward. Sure Daboll is young but he's had two stints as an offensive coordinator (Cleveland and Miami), so he's probably learned a few lessons that will make his Chiefs gig more successful.
Daboll Hire Must Work In KC from Warpaint Illustrated
Kansas City would be wise to join the bidding for Manning's services, even if that means guaranteeing $10 million.
The Chiefs tried this experiment before - bringing in Montana after a legendary run with the San Francisco 49ers. Some will say that was a dramatic failure, but I would argue it was one of the organization's finest hours.
Montana was only in Kansas City two short seasons, but in that time, he led the 1993-94 Chiefs to the AFC Championship game.

Clifton Roaf
sounds like a pretty awesome dad. What an awesome way to repay those long drives by letting him present for his son as he’s inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Chief Willie Wildcat - February 9, 2012
Hell yes awesome dad
and double hell yes to Willie for asking him to present for him.
I might actually watch the ceremony this year just to hear it.
Ochophosphate - February 9, 2012
damn straight
Manning on the chiefs super bowl contenders even with half a arm with Cassel average with Orton playoff type team . With draft pick who knows. Kc is built to win now and you did it mainly through the draft pioli was good about that but now its time to take a risk to take it to a whole new lvl!
rickrock58 - February 9, 2012 via mobile
Change is good
This will be a good deal for the coaching staff, they wont have to worry about somebody like a Haley to keep changing things and screwing everything up and causing problems.
chiefsfool - February 9, 2012
what, we haven't locked up Bowe and Carr and McClain and Orton yet?
the Super Bowl has been over for almost half a week and STILL nothing? I’m shocked, stunned at the lackadaisical and cavalier attitude shown by this regime … what are we going to talk about? there is NOTHING going on and we, as bloggers, are left speechless …
(yeah, like THAT’S gonna happen)
upamtn - February 9, 2012
Oh boy relax
Look the closer the Free agent player gets to the deadline to free agency the more power they have for a bigger contract. Also I believe Carr will test the waters. He has never made me feel like a team player looking to stay to win a SB, more like a man loking to get paid. Don’t get me wrong I have noting againts a man getting the money. But the Chief’s will not pay him more than Flowers. And Carr will if he goes somewhere else. Plues there are 5-7 great new, young DB’s coming out of college this year in the draft. but Carr, D-Bowe will be figured out in March.

Could go to Detroit, get paid, go home and be closer to a Super Bowl

He is from Flint
The same place my girl is from. Trust me when I say that no one wants to go to Flint. I have seen some major shitty places, and it is around the top of the list.
Big_Chief - February 9, 2012
Haha so maybe it'd be more about staying away
Than going home
MNchiefsfan - February 9, 2012
What makes you so sure that the Chiefs won't pay Carr more than Flowers?
Because everyone says that Flowers is “the #1” CB? Flower’s ship already sailed out of port. He was a big boy and made a decision. He got paid.
If I’m GM, I sign a player with known qualities already in house rather than let him go for a couple of million extra and having to replace him with a high $$ draft pick that can be used elsewhere on a team full of other needs. And I don’t see better alternatives in FA.
Pay the man, buy him some more goddamn Red Socks and then use the draft pick and get us a QB, RT and NG.

For the record AK
My frustration is not meant for you but i couldn’t find where to reply to Pioli. :)
Joel, i’m gonna need a link to One Arrowhead Drive
stenerud's roost - February 9, 2012
Let's get our QB in FA...
Manning…or Orton.
AnkenyChiefsFan - February 9, 2012
Should we assemble a list of the scrub WRs that came through KC
that will end up in Pittsburgh next season? Jerheme Urban, Terrence Copper, Jeremy Horne…maybe even TE Anthony Becht.
cheapham - February 9, 2012
Copper is a ST beast
nothing spectacular at WR but serviceable – he makes his mark on special teams. I’d take him over the others listed for that purpose alone.
Ochophosphate - February 9, 2012
It's very telling that Urban ends up where ever Haley goes
Maybe I should become Haleys friend so I can get hired to ride the bench
KingChief - February 9, 2012
I understand it’s the offseason, and we need story lines, and speculation, ect. But the media needs to get past considering Manning to KC. It’s just simply not going to happen. Pioli refuses to accept that Matt Cassel was a mistake, and he’s going to be our starting QB next year. Is it frustrating knowing that? Of course, but unless we get a competent GM, that’s not going to change.
Topchief1 - February 9, 2012
I'll give him this off-season to find someone, do something (anything) to show me otherwise
upamtn - February 9, 2012
Echo!
I share the same feeling. He has improved the team but we have a ways to go. He doesn’t have to sign Manning (but it would be nice). The deal breaker for me is whether or not he brings in real competition for Cassel.
cowboyChief - February 9, 2012
It takes time
Good teams and Greats teams is the time that takes to build them threw the draft. As do the Pat’s…Pitt… Giants… etc… Not to mention keeping the coaching staff the same as much as possible. Heck look of what happen to Phily in the offseason spending tons of money for what? The problem was Pioli mistake was hiring Todd. Weis made Cassel good enough to make a probowl. But Todd ran off Weis. I’m not saying Cassel is the answer.
AngryKitty - February 9, 2012
That's where I'm at too but if he doesn't do anything really meaningful, it's another year
wasted…..and this is year number 4.
jcox31mc - February 9, 2012
but as much as I may not like Pioli or disagree with some things he does, he HAS added a lot of good players ... he's not "incompetent"
upamtn - February 9, 2012
At the firiing presser didn't Pioil say he made mistakes and needs to learn from them?
I want to give him the benefit of the doubt and yes, I have no qualms with his drafts.
electriclight - February 9, 2012
Main players that Pioli has added: Breston, Berry, Jackson. Main players inherited: Bowe,
Charles, Albert, Hali, Derrick Johnson, Flowers, Carr, Dorsey.
jcox31mc - February 9, 2012
Houston, Dex, Arenas, and Asamoah were all major contributors this year
MNchiefsfan - February 9, 2012
And Lewis.
And soon to be Hudson.
TRSChief - February 9, 2012
Look, I’ve kept my mouth shut during the whole Egoli thing, and have supported him up through this offseason. I also think he’s done a good job drafting. 2009 was a terrible draft year, and he still got two good starters (even if 1 is a special teamer), and for a guy hired a couple months before the draft, that’s not too bad. 2010 was an outstanding draft, and I’m high on this years class as well. I loved the Hudson pick and the Bailey pick and think both are going to be very good players for this team. But when I read about him treating his employees like crap, obsessing over minute details (candy wrapper), that have no bearing on the product he was hired to produce, just overall creating a miserable workplace environment, and his treatment of a coach who dared speak his mind, makes me realize he’s “that boss.” He knows what he has to say to keep from being fired, but then his actions show you that he hasn’t learned anything at all. I fear that all he is going to do is drive this team to ruin, just to try to prove he was right all along. So he’s lost my trust now, and i’m going to be more vocal about that.
Topchief1 - February 9, 2012
I think Pioli is coming around on the whole Cassel thing
Pioli doesn’t point out specific team needs in the media and he specifically said he is fixing the oline and bringing in competition for the QB spot to get better. So him going after Peyton is a possibility.
KingChief - February 9, 2012
I like how people have decided that Pioli is dead-up married to Cassel, and stubborn to the core
Is it because Cassel wasn’t released immediately at the end of the season? That would have been foolish.
Is it because Cassel was the undisputed starter last year after having what most considered a good 2010?
Is it because Cassel wasn’t forced to be pulled (Pioli trumping Haley) mid-season, prior to injury, in favor of…. Palko? Stanzi?
Or is it because Pioli and the staff refuse to talk negatively about a player that they have under contract (which doesn’t apply to just Cassel)?
There is a lot of conjecture going on here based on pretty flimsy evidence.
You don’t know that Cassel will be the starter next year. And to presume that you do know that based on the generic comments that are coming out of the organization is folly. There are more politics involved here than you’re giving credence to.
We will not know anything concrete about what direction we’re heading for QB next year until free agency and the draft have all settled. The only thing we have to go by now, is who we currently have – Cassel and Stanzi. We own them, we have their contract – until we trade or cut them, they are ours. In essence, they are the only QBs on the roster that we are fit to discuss right now. Which again, means that the coache/GM/owner doesn’t come out and say anything contrary to the idea that they fully believe in them and think they can do great things.
There is NO harm in taking this approach – other than making some fans go bat-shit crazy.
There is absolute harm in taking the opposite.
For now, stop thinking like a fan(atic), and try thinking as a manager/owner/coach.
Ochophosphate - February 9, 2012
Truth.
If Pioli plans on getting rid of Cassel this offseason, he would be saying the same stuff he is right now. There’s no reason to tip your hand. I would be prancing around telling everyone that Cassel is the greatest QB in the world and my unquestioned started if I was thinking about trading him. Or vice versa, no one knows right now.
JayhawksNChiefs - February 9, 2012
You really need to get some new material to write
badassz1987 - February 9, 2012
From the article on the coaching staff
Continuity anyone? Jason Campbell and Alex Smith are great comparisons to Cassel and both showed they can be successful when handled properly. I’d prefer to see an upgrade if the opportunity presents itself, but I do think these constant changes are a relevant excuse for Cassel’s struggles.
RedNose - February 9, 2012
To counter that
I would say that Jason Campbell and Alex Smith have more natural talent than Cassel. So changing up coaches will affect the mediocre player more. Those other 2 can go out and wing it where Cassel needs to be constantly handled.
Brad-KC - February 9, 2012
To counter that
Alex didnt lose Gore for the season or even Vernon Davis… Campbell had the same playbook for at least 2 years in a row 2010 and 2011….and had 2 good running backs even if one went down….Cassel was screwed at the begining middle and end…
AngryKitty - February 9, 2012
Even in Cassel's "pro bowl" year
he wasn’t very good. Our play makers were very good and our play calling.
Brad-KC - February 9, 2012
You didn't just try to compare Vernon Davis to Moeaki did you?
HIV 2 Elway - February 9, 2012
My point exactly
He was pretty good in 2011 before going down, likely in part because of the continuity. In fact, if he’s available, I’d rather grab him than Orton or Cassel.
RedNose - February 9, 2012
I would agree that they have a little more talent.
I don’t think there is a huge gap though. Campbell probably has better arm strength than either guy. Alex Smith is probably the most athletic of the group, but Cassel is a very similar player. (Moves well, ability to extend plays, middle of the pack accuracy, middle of the pack zip on the ball.)
RedNose - February 9, 2012
If indeed they are planning on Cassel
then I would think they will shore up the LG and RT (in that order) to give Cassel every chance to succeed…as well as the short yardage problem. Like them or not, Weigs and Lilja were a big part of the problem with the pocket collapsing, and failure to get short yardage. I have a feeling they agreed to let Weigs continue his snap streak if he would come back last year.
Even if they bring in legit QB competition then they need to use 1st and 2nd draft picks (DeCastro and Martin) and/or a combination of legit FA and 1st or 2nd pick to finish the Oline. That would make me happy even wothout a Pey Pey signing.
KCfosho - February 9, 2012
Along with stating that there would at least be QB competition this year..
One of the few things Pioli’s put on record that means anything was that the O-Line will definitely be addressed. I’m pretty sure there’s going to be at least 1 new face on the line next year, probably 2.
severn58 - February 9, 2012
Agreed on the Oline
I don’t have a good solution for an alternative at QB right now, but an upgrade at G and RT must happen by any means necessary. Evan Mathis is a UFA I’d like to see pursued.
As for the draft, I’d like to see ILB addressed in the early rounds, but certainly G and OT are priorities as well. If they shore up the line it will make both Cassel and Daboll look a lot better.
RedNose - February 9, 2012
The difference I see
Is that not only does Matt not have much of an arm, but it’s not just the system changes that have hampered him. He lacks a lot of the basic skills of a starting QB. He has very little pocket presence, doesn’t go through progressions, and isn’t very accurate. If he hasn’t developed those things by now (and he hasn’t) I’m not sure he ever will. I don’t think a particular system or continuity in any system will help him overcome these things.
Great example – Orton had no continuity in the system whatsoever and showed things in his 3 games that Cassel has never shown us. With a full offseason to acclimate and all the weapons available he would be head and shoulders above anything we’ve had from Matt in the past 3 seasons. Not to say he’s great, but more that Matt is average at his very best.

I still don't see why Romeo couldn't give the DC title to someone on staff.
Regardless of how much control Romeo would retain, it would have been a nice gesture and looked good on someone’s resume. Is this a cost cutting move?

And since I’d be getting something I didn’t earn (except by rule of the above), it would be a perpetual loop!
Ochophosphate - February 9, 2012
And it is.
electriclight - February 9, 2012
With Carthon as Assistant HC, and Daboll as OC, I think Romeo has a lot of flexibility to stay involved on defense. Should he hire a coordinator? I don’t know. Gary Gibbs probably helps with a lot of the game planning but I still think that Romeo will stay in his comfort zone on the defensive side gameplanning and calling plays and let the guys he trusts (Daboll, Carthon,) run the offense. He had a Defensive Coordinator in Cleveland. Maybe he learned that it was best for him to just do it himself.
RedNose - February 9, 2012
At the end of the day, it's just a title.
The team was running the best it has in the last three years with Romeo as HC/DC. No need to change that. Need to keep that momentum going into the offseason.
