Good thing I didn't post our tight end free agency preview yet because I probably would've gotten this one wrong: The Kansas City Chiefs signed TE Jake O'Connell to a one-year extension, according to Brian McIntyre.
This just means the Chiefs have him under contract now. He was a restricted free agent so they had control of his rights either way.
O'Connell was a 2009 draft pick by the Chiefs and has been on and off the practice squad and then active roster throughout his three years in the league.
That takes care of one of the three Chiefs tight ends who were scheduled for free agency. TE Leonard Pope and TE Anthony Becht are both scheduled to be free agents and we've heard nothing on where they stand with the Chiefs.
O'Connell joins TE Tony Moeaki as the only other tight end under contract.

Great....At least we know the front office is working to extend some people
I’d have rather heard Bowe and Carr but maybe they’re knocking everyone out one by one.
SoCalChief17 - February 9, 2012
yeah, they're working on it
can’t get em all done in one day
stagdsp - February 9, 2012
I just hope that they really mean what they preach
About developing their own guys and everything. I’ve been a Bowe fan since he came to KC, and I finally started coming around on Carr last season.
Just sucks that after this it’s Albert and Dorsey, another two main pieces to the team.
SoCalChief17 - February 9, 2012
I'm sure they do
I personally can’t see Bowe or Carr being gone.
Albert will get a deal.
I would think Dorsey does, but he’s possibly the least likely of that group
stagdsp - February 9, 2012
are you seeing OLD posts in the "red" home area at bottom right?
upamtn - February 9, 2012
uh as in Jan 25th-26th? yes
chiefs_fan_forever - February 9, 2012
well, at least the fanposts are showing normally again :-)
upamtn - February 9, 2012
Yay mock drafts!
Tarkus - February 9, 2012
This is not the Gnus I was wanting to hear
ExRoyalsFan - February 9, 2012
hmmm..
not really ‘excited’ about it..
GaryfromIA - February 9, 2012
gee
I guess the silver lining here is that they’re working on extending their own FA’s
Buck'O - February 9, 2012
cool
still think O’Connel has all the right tools to be a solid TE#2
IPWT2009 - February 9, 2012
Pope > O'Connel
nateforchiefs - February 9, 2012
sh&%t hitting the fan in 3...2...1...
(I actually like O’Connel as the #3/4 TE and ST player)
stagdsp - February 9, 2012
Since Becht is good at making tackles in the backfield we can re-sign him as a DE
KingChief - February 9, 2012
funniest moment of the season right there
mostly because he does the “hands in the air dance” trying to get out of the way.
Horrible and hilarious at the same time.
Ochophosphate - February 9, 2012

ChiefWarPaint - February 9, 2012
Jack O'Bannon Scott?! Really?!

A dead-ringer for Phillip Rivers' throwing motion
harder to analyze at this speed… but still accurate

I see you found us a new QB
sign him Immediately before Washington beats us to it
ChiefsWarCamo - February 10, 2012
Here is news: the roster dregs are eager to sign a contract asap
The real talent (Carr, Bowe) is going to wait for free agency and let the highest bidder win out.
RememberDelaney37 - February 9, 2012 via mobile
Oh boy, signing garbage!
sayten - February 9, 2012
I just realized that we drafted Tony Mo 2 spots before Jimmy Graham
DOH!!!!
OmahaNick - February 9, 2012
Damn.
Hind sight is 20/20 though
nateforchiefs - February 9, 2012
Did you also realize Jimmy Graham is a glorified WR who has no interest in blocking?
RememberDelaney37 - February 9, 2012 via mobile
Its all good if you win games
Because he is a glorified WR
ChiefWarPaint - February 9, 2012
So Graham on this team would have won us games and accomplished the same feats a he did in New Orleans?
RememberDelaney37 - February 9, 2012 via mobile
Who knows
Did Moeaki help us win games?
ChiefWarPaint - February 9, 2012
In 2010 he did.
Tarkus - February 9, 2012
But were talking about 2011
ChiefWarPaint - February 9, 2012
No, we're talking about 2011
PVChiefsfan - February 10, 2012
Who. Gives. A. Shit?
Trying to hype up a TE for being a good blocker is like dating a chick for her personality
HIV 2 Elway - February 9, 2012 via mobile
Pretty much
In todays NFL its all about mis-matches and Graham provides one.
Blocking can be taught with time, just ask Gonzo.
ChiefWarPaint - February 9, 2012
Tony G was a bad blocker when he first got here too
Blocking can be learned a lot easier than pass catching and route running too
nateforchiefs - February 9, 2012
That size/speed/catch radius cant be taught either
ChiefWarPaint - February 9, 2012
If only it could be cloned too
nateforchiefs - February 9, 2012
We can build it
We have the technology
ChiefWarPaint - February 9, 2012
blocking te's are a huge part of this offense, and moeaki had many big seal off blocks on charles' big runs in 2010
so you know what, the entire offenes cares
you just dont
SDChief - February 9, 2012
Not in 2011
And if Haley/Muir misuse a player of Grahams caliber then thats not his fault
ChiefWarPaint - February 9, 2012
just like jason dunn, he was a waste of space right?
SDChief - February 9, 2012
Compared to guys like Gronk and Graham?
Yes
HIV 2 Elway - February 9, 2012 via mobile
Moeaki has the potential to be equal to, if not surpass both of them, as a complete TE
He has the size, the hands, route running, blocking, just got to stay healthy, something I’m sure the Pats wish Gronk did when they need him the most
RememberDelaney37 - February 9, 2012 via mobile
But he has the durability of a china doll
saints_chiefsfan1979 - February 9, 2012
He's been as durable as Jamaal Charles
but everyone will quickly that Jamaal is one of the best RBs in the league, and his ability to stay healthy doesn’t come into question.
Strange.
Ochophosphate - February 9, 2012
uh no he hasn't
2011 . had off season knee surgery, tore ACL in final preseason game
2010. Missed most of training camp with an ankle injury, missed a game with concussion
2009: Missed three games due to an ankle injury.
2008: Limited to nine games due to nagging injuries, including a concussion, hamstring injury and recovery from a fractured foot.
2007: Received a medical redshirt following four games due to a broken wrist dislocated elbow.
saints_chiefsfan1979 - February 9, 2012
I don't like to apply labels to somebody,
but the kid might as well have a big red cross stuck to his forehead.
Brsrkr - February 9, 2012
The human gingerbread man
saints_chiefsfan1979 - February 9, 2012
Ok
Jamaal Charles
Pro:
2011: Tore ACL in 2nd game of the season – out for season
2011: Left Playoff game vs. Balt at halftime due to “concussion like symptoms”
2010: Left Raiders game due to “physical problems he would not describe.”
2010: Left preseason game vs. Eagles due to “some sort of injury” (seen limping & holding arm).
2009: Missed week 2 vs. Oakland – undisclosed
College:
2007: Left ankle injury vs. Iowa St and again in the game vs. Tx Tech – missed 2nd half of games
2006: Ankle injury – missed game vs. Sam Houston State
2005: Left ankle sprain causes him to leave game vs. OU, missed 3 following games
He had shoulder issues since high school, having surgery in 2003. If you recall he also had shoulder surgery after the 2009/2010 season – his shoulder caused him to miss minimal time in 2009 but in at least one case it caused him to leave a game and return later.
Really not as far apart as you think – and I think I’m missing a lot of games in there where Charles mysteriously “sat out” portions of games due to injuries. I could be wrong about that 2009 Oak game too, never really found the reason behind that.
Ochophosphate - February 9, 2012
If you count Charles' missed time in games, and Moeaki's in seasons,
the numbers might be similar.
Brsrkr - February 9, 2012
Moeaki missed one season as a pro, most of one in college
Yes Moeaki had a rough college career and seems to be more “injury prone”.
To my original point – the first thing that comes out of peoples mouths (fingers) with Moeaki is how much of an injury liability he is. The last thing that comes out when discussing Charles is injury.
As a percentage, Moeaki has missed more time, but in actual time missed they’re roughly equivalent.
I hope both of them can stay healthy going forward.
Ochophosphate - February 9, 2012
in that Oakland game
He was benched like Haley did a lot of guys. Rememeber DJ Charles and other guys were benched to ‘’motivate them’’? I would almost bet my house it was non injury related.
But lets get back to your other points. This year is the 1st year Charles missed a game do to injury. In 4 years, he has missed 14 games. Moeaki has missed 17 in 2 years. I don’t see any comparison whatsoever
As far as college goes , Charles missed a total of 1 game with injuries( you are wrong in 05 he played in all 13 games). Moeaki missed more than that in 09 alone. Again, apples and oranges. And something else to remember, Moeaki out weighs Charles by at least 50 lbs.
You are trying to equate the 2 by saying’’well, Charles left a few games’’…ya and? I don’t care how big, or tough , or strong you are, you are going to get dinged in games. Brett Favre may have been the toughest guy ever to play. Even he left games with injury during that amazing streak he had. Charles played dinged up Moeaki didn’t. Maybe it is a toughness issue I don’t know. But, it is absurd to compare the 2 as far as their injuries go , in fact, it’s not even close
Even this , look at how their knees got hurt. Charles slipped on a 1st down marker. It doesn’t get much more flukey than that . In fact, I said to myself 3 steps before he slipped’’ Oh my god, he is going to trip on that’ ,sure enough, he did. I am still trying to figure out how Tony hurt his knee. He dove out of bounds and it didn’t look like he hit it or twisted it or anything. So , even their knee injuries can’t even be compared. Moeaki is injury prone no doubt about it. Let us not forget another chief that was as well……..
saints_chiefsfan1979 - February 9, 2012
Moeaki has the potential to equal or surpass Graham?
If so, then the Chiefs would have an offense to rival the Packers or Saints. I don’t buy that Moeaki is that good, but I’d love to see it happen. I would just like him to stay healthy.
Dagda - February 9, 2012
Graham and Gronk don't have Matt Cassel
Put Moeaki on the Pats or Saints and I bet you’d see some high level production. Gronk has worse health issues than Tony ever has. A lot of teams saw his back injury as something that could limit his career in the long run.
CapsLockKey - February 9, 2012 via Android app
I agree that Moeaki is on the same level as Gronk/Hernandez/Graham
stagdsp - February 10, 2012
Obviously the team does
And for someone who gets the importance of having a good QB, Graham wouldn’t be HALF the player he is without Brees. On this team, he would just be a little used TE who doesn’t block. He wouldn’t have seen the field
RememberDelaney37 - February 9, 2012 via mobile
Maybe so
but I’d love to have Jason Dunn back about now
Buck'O - February 9, 2012
Jamaal gives a shit.
Brsrkr - February 9, 2012
Exactly
Dumb if you’re being casual in your thought, but crucial if you’re seriously considering if this is the right person for you.
MNchiefsfan - February 9, 2012
Jimmy Graham wouldn't be the Jimmy Graham as we know him
if Cassel was throwing him the ball
KingChief - February 9, 2012
or in Haley's offense
KingChief - February 9, 2012
yeah, had moeaki played this year, he very well may have had a great season as well
plus hes 2x the blocker jimmy is
SDChief - February 9, 2012
More like 100x the blocker
ChiefWarPaint - February 9, 2012
yeah, trying to be nice ;)
SDChief - February 9, 2012
Some might come to the conclusion that
having Drew Brees pass to you might give you better stats. Moeaki had “the catch” that’s all I need to know about him.
Brad-KC - February 9, 2012
Great point
Anyone have a gif to share of the talent Moeaki has?

Obviously because he used to play for the Patriots
RememberDelaney37 - February 9, 2012 via mobile
but he didn't.... we took him in the seventh round... traded a future 7th for him at that.
chiefs_fan_forever - February 9, 2012
and got absolutely nothing in return for that trade
werewolf_1979 - February 9, 2012
except a seventh rounder who actually made a roster and sees the field
You do realize a lot of seventh round picks don’t even make a roster, right?
PVChiefsfan - February 10, 2012
id hope its a plan to keep 3 te's, but i still question how we cant have an upgrade at te 3 over jake
SDChief - February 9, 2012
Because a TE 3 that's an upgrade over Jake
wants to be a TE 2 or a TE 1 (most likely a TE 2)
Can’t say for sure, just my guess.
Ochophosphate - February 9, 2012
Just because he signed a 1 year deal
Doesn’t mean he is a lock to make the team (see Mike Cox)
saints_chiefsfan1979 - February 9, 2012
Hey!
I don’t want to see your Cox.
Ochophosphate - February 9, 2012

Holy Shit, that's........amazing.

looking for the nearest wall to bang my head against.
ive not seen one bit of positive from this guy, even cottam showed some flashes of some good ability, i dont even like oconnell’s blocking, this puzzles me.
SDChief - February 9, 2012
Actually ive heard his blocking is pretty good....
ChiefWarPaint - February 9, 2012
as i said, ive not seen a positive, and i dont like his blocking
i have no idea how that=him being a poor blocker, just from what ive seen, hes flat out mediocre on special teams, and i havent been blown away by his blocking
maybe stats prove me wrong, dont know, just the eye test
SDChief - February 9, 2012

Thank god we didn’t lose the playmaker that is O’connel. I was getting worried for a second;) .In all reality, i don’t think he makes the team next year. This is just giving him 1 more shot to prove he belongs( which he doesn’t)
saints_chiefsfan1979 - February 9, 2012
now if they canjust get Piscatelli signed
tomachop - February 9, 2012
Where exactly did they extend him, was it a pharmaceutical or surgical procedure?
And most importantly…does Ron Jeremy approve?
crashman6 - February 9, 2012
Arms
Here’s a picture that was snapped of him in an alley the night he left the hospital. Tough to make out the details but you can see how long the arms are. He should be able to snag some floaters with those – will make him a great end-zone threat.
