Kansas City Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel held his customary post-OTA press conference yesterday and we've got a few quotes from it.
Q: How do your quarterbacks look so far?
A: "I think that they're doing pretty good. I think they're beginning to gain a command of the system and some of the checks that we have in place. They're all doing well. Probably, Brady (Quinn) and Matt (Cassel) are a little ahead of (Ricky) Stanzi right now, but they're all working at it. They're a good group in that room, so we feel good about them."
More after the jump.
I'm really into the Triple Crown this year so you'll have to put up with me posting videos about it.
If you haven't already seen BJ's work today at the Arrowhead Pride YouTube channel, please do. His first draft breakdown got rave reviews.
This is your open thread for the evening. We've got the Indy 500 this weekend, the NBA playoffs and NHL playoffs this week. Anything you're watching in particular?
Earlier today, Joel mentioned that Kansas City Chiefs GM Scott Pioli had an interesting back and forth with Kevin Kietzman of 810 WHB Sports radio yesterday. Joel brought up Kietzman's love for Andrew Luck in his earlier post and Pioli had a pretty good response (As did Kietzman).
And of course there was more about quarterbacks in that interview, notably the Chiefs' current starting QB Matt Cassel. Here's what Pioli said on Cassel and the state of the franchise quarterback, courtesy of Sports Radio Interviews:
"I think that we have a really good quarterback. I think we have three good quarterbacks. I think the guy who's set to be our starting quarterback is a good quarterback, he's a good starting NFL quarterback."
That's four mentions of "good" in a rather short paragraph. On my first read through of this interview, I have to admit I felt like the Chiefs GM was overselling Matt Cassel on being good.
Scott Pioli continued the interview by talking about the fan base's perception of Cassel:
The Kansas City Chiefs have added defensive end Ropati Pitoitua to the roster this evening. Pitoitua was a New York Jet for the last four seasons after going undrafted in 2008. Josh Looney originally had the news.
It's tempting to draw hard conclusions from any roster signing and defensive linemen are no different. This is a signing for depth, in May, that happens across the league every year. Romeo Crennel will not be molding any defensive strategy around Ropati Pitoitua. It's entirely possible Pitoitua does not make the Chiefs roster come September.
Back in February, Gang Green Nation asked if Pitoitua should stay or go:
Pitoitua had 19 tackles on the season. He seldom makes plays that stand out. He does the dirty work, holding the point of attack and tying up blockers to keep the playmakers behind him clean. Over the years, the coaching staff has gotten the 26 year old to play with more consistent technique. He has improved. A guy as tall as Ropati can sometimes allow blockers to get a base underneath him to push him back, but that has happened less and less.
Again, this describes a classic off season depth signing. Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
Good morning everyone. Here is today's Kansas City Chiefs news.
I was leaving Ryan Tannehill's pro day workout on Thursday in the Texas A&M indoor complex when an apparent NFL fan decked in red and hanging in front of the Bright Building yelled something my way. I didn't understand what he said, so asked him, "Excuse me?"
Figured he might have been needing directions to the Dixie Chicken (hey, I met my wife there) or something. In a yell that might have been heard over on Simpson Drill Field, he responded, "Kansas City Chiefs!"
So even individual workouts are drawing fans these days
New Raiders head coach Dennis Allen, who was Denver's defensive coordinator last season, senses that the AFC West could evolve into a pass-happy division.
"Peyton is one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game," Allen said. "He's going to be an awesome challenge for all of us to find ways of how to defend him."
The Seattle Seahawks, Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, Tennessee Titans, Philadelphia Eagles and Houston Texans were among the teams present for Hamilton's Pro Day, as confirmed in an email exchange with Ryan McGinty, Prairie View A&M sports information director.
With the spotlight on, Hamilton said he was confident entering the workouts and it went well.
The Badgers have been producing NFL linemen for years, but last year was a big haul, as three were selected. Since the 2000 NFL Draft, there have been 12 offensive linemen taken with college roots with the Badgers.
This year it's C Peter Konz and Zeitler, one of the higher rated guards in this '12 draft class. At a position group know for a work ethic that never quits among the best players, Zeitler is one of a kind in Madison. He works so much and with a quiet personality, his teammates have taken to calling him a "robot."
Good morning everyone. NJ Chiefs Fan continues to be off this week enjoying sunny weather. We have a couple of Romeo Crennel interviews from the NFL owners meetings and a Scott Pioli interview with ESPN. Enjoy today's your Kansas City Chiefs news.
I know there is a faction of Chiefs fans who perpetually want the team to move away from Cassel. Don't be surprised if Cassel flourishes with these new additions and an otherwise healthy supporting cast. Pioli thinks that is the case.
"I do believe in Matt," Pioli said. "He is a good starting quarterback."Pioli, Chiefs continue to go in right direction | ESPN's AFC West blog
"We've done a nice job of addressing some needs through free agency," Crennel said from Palm Beach, Fla., site of the NFL's annual meetings. "We've put ourselves in position, with the needs we filled, that when we go into the draft, we can look at the best athlete available and the guy we think can help our team the most.
"We won't have to draft for need. That gives us many more options."
