Three Chiefs Draft Picks Don't Practice

Photo

OL Jeff Allen wasn't the only Kansas City Chiefs player missing practice on Thursday. Head coach Romeo Crennel confirmed that Allen, RB Cyrus Gray and DB De'Quan Menzie all missed practice with various ailments. Allen has been out the last two days and Gray has been out all week.

Via comments sent out by the Chiefs, Crennel said:

"I really don't have a timetable because the injuries are different for different players, and they heal differently. Basically, Cyrus has missed all week. Jeff missed two days. So, after this long weekend and a weekend of treatment, we'll see where they are. Like I said, hopefully we can get them back on the field next week."

Allen was spotted in a walking boot, which suggests a foot injury. The KC Star's Adam Teicher wondered if it was a high ankle sprain, which could keep him out for the rest of OTAs if that's the case (which we don't know whether it is). Gray and Menzie are both out with what's been called hamstring injuries.

It's a long offseason so the sprains and strains at this point aren't a concern. The other guys who are recovering from offseason surgeries -- Tony Moeaki, Eric Berry, Jamaal Charles and Kendrick Lewis -- seem more and more likely to miss all of OTAs and just focus on training camp.

Don't rule out McCluster as a RB. Sounds like new OC Brian Daboll is using OTAs to see Dex play WR. Crennel open to getting best matchups

Dontari Poe Moves Onto The First Team At Chiefs OTAs

Photo

We'll see if it lasts but Kansas City Chiefs first round pick Dontari Poe is lining up with the starters at the Chiefs OTAs, according to the Chiefs' Josh Looney. At last check, Poe was lining up behind veteran Amon Gordon.

It's still May, which is incredibly early. This doesn't mean Poe will or won't be the starter but it's a step in the right direction for the Chiefs first round pick.

Earlier this year, Romeo Crennel was quoted as saying he never lets rookies immediately become starters, noting that he didn't let Eric Berry run with the first team on the first day.

He wanted until the second day.

Crennel said, "That's all it took!" when a reporter asked him about that last month.

Got no idea if this is true but if is it's hilarious. Lawrence Taylor & his agent Mark Lepselter were told last night winning bidder for LT's Super Bowl Ring was none other than Charlie Sheen!!!

Of course it was. Did you expect anyone else?

Chiefs Draft Pick Appears To Be Injured

The last time the media saw the Kansas City Chiefs practice came on Monday, the start of Organized Team Activities (OTAs), and rookie offensive lineman Jeff Allen was participating in practice.

Now that we catch up with the Chiefs again today, Allen is not practicing. 610 Sports reports Allen is sitting out of practice today and is in a walking boot.

A walking boot can mean a lot of different things and it may not be a serious injury. It could be as something as simple as a sprain or perhaps something more serious. The Chiefs aren't required to release injury information in the offseason so it may be a while before we figure out what's going on.

The only other draft pick to miss a practice due to injury is safety De'Quan Menzie.

No word on the other injured Chiefs, including Eric Berry, Jamaal Charles, Tony Moeaki and Kendrick Lewis.

With UDFAs getting signed and camp starting, KC's resident stats man, Martin Manley recently made a post about UDFAs, how important they are in the NFL, how many are in the NFL, and what % of team rosters they make up (as well as on the Chiefs). Here are some meta-calculations from it:

1. On average UDFAs make up 37% of league rosters
2. UDFAs made up 60% of the Rams team in 2011
3. 30% of the Chiefs roster last year were UDFAs

It's a good read that I recommend checking out.

Chiefs Reportedly Visit With Another Veteran Free Agent Safety

Photo

If it wasn't clear the Kansas City Chiefs are seeking a veteran safety then it should be now. After the Chiefs visited with free agent safeties OJ Atogwe and Yeremiah Bell, they have reportedly met with Abram Elam, another free agent safety, according to a report from Bob Gretz.

Bell has since signed with the New York Jets. Atogwe remains a free agent.

Chiefs safeties Eric Berry and Kendrick Lewis are both recovering from injuries and neither has participated in OTAs so far so the Chiefs need a safety net there. Elam is at least the third veteran the Chiefs have looked out. That the Chiefs are looking at veteran safeties isn't necessarily a sign that Berry or Lewis aren't progressing well enough in their rehab. As the Chiefs learned last year, you can never have enough depth at key positions. But it should raise your eyebrows a little bit that the Chiefs have been concerned enough to visit with several veteran free agents at the position.

Elam, 30, went undrafted seven years ago and debuted with the Dallas Cowboys in the 2006 NFL season. He spent time with the Jets and Cleveland Browns before returning to the Cowboys last season. As recently as January, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he wouldn't be surprised if Elam returned to the team, calling him the "quarterback" of the defense.

Elam also recently visited with the Tennessee Titans.

Bizarro World: Jack Harry Now Driving The Chiefs Bandwagon

What world do we live in now that Jack Harry, the NBC Action News broadcaster, is driving the Kansas City Chiefs bandwagon?

I'm not sure what Harry's angle is -- there's always an angle -- but he says the Chiefs have the best team they've had in a decade, which would include the 13-win 2003 season.

So, what can we expect from Clark Hunt's team this year?

I'm never shy in letting it fly - I have no reservations in predicting this will be the best Chiefs team in over a decade.

I'm not sure what to make of this.

I give it a month before he's back to Mad Jack.
